A quick decider since it is Saturday to head out on the train to Sorrento and then bus to Positano. A bit quieter with the locals but plenty of tourists. Beautiful ride along the jaw dropping coast line to Positano...we made it Mary! So the bus driver has done it a hundred times and obviously confident...we choose the side of the bus for the view and a view we certainly got....sheer drop down the cliffs to the sea! Shame we couldn't photograph through the window...very windy road. Positano maybe the oldest place on the Amalfi coast with settlements dating back to the Upper Paleolithic Age. The Church housing a Byzantine of origin black madonna. Even though the day was quite warm we didn't swim but we did put our feet in..glad we have come on the ... read more

So I may have lied a bit to all of you blog followers. I promised a more in depth post about the rest of our experience in Florence and to get you up to speed on our Positano living. However, there is just too much to go over. So, I made an executive decision to cover the highlights and upload new pictures in this post. You're welcome. One second as I go back to my previous post to see where we left off... got it! So quick recap of Florence is in order. Day 1: arrive, check in, eat and then explore. Ended up at a great bar recommended by Tara (a work friend of Lauren's), who studied abroad there, right across from the Medici Chapel (San Lorenzo area). They start happy hour appetizers around 18:00 ... read more

Today we'll be taking a bus along the Amalfi Drive to Positano. We've heard that the road's steep and windy, and that the bus drivers are all maniacs, so Issy doses up on her trusty (?) travel sickness tablets. I wonder if she'll stay awake. She says she wants to sit near the front of so she can see what's going on, and that this helps with her motion sickness. I'm not quite sure how this works. I'm pretty sure I'd rather be up the back where I can't watch our lives constantly flashing before our eyes. The bus is packed, and fortunately there are no empty seats up the front next to Issy. The stories we'd heard are all correct. The bus hares off as if there's no tomorrow, there's no slowing down on even ... read more

Geo: 40.6299, 14.4863Our walk today was taking us from Praiano over to Positano via the well known Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods), but clearly the Gods were not concerned with the local traffic. Just as we set out from the hotel we were entertained by the stand off between the local bus, the cars and a number of scooters - all trying to get through a very narrow street and no one prepared to give way to one another. Classic! After the amusing traffic impasse was resolved we moved on and quickly reached the edge of Praiano and began the uphill climb to the abandoned monastery of San Domenico which lies on a high rocky promontory overlooking Vèttica Maggiore and Positano. Slow and steady was the only way to ascend the stepped path and fortunately ... read more

Oh my! Another breathtaking day; this time in Positano north of Praiano - still on the mid western coast of Italy. This is definately more set up for tourism with boutique clothing shops, souvenirs and fine foods. Again much is closed but we found a lovely restaurant on the beach and treated ourselves to a lovely seafood lunch. Also found the best coffee so far - caffe Americano is the way to go. This town is even more stunning than Praiano. The amazing steps, streets and buildings mounted onto precipitous cliffs is mind boggling. We saw some tools of the building trade today and gained some idea of how these seemingly inaccessible places are constructed. Powered wheel barrows, scaffolds with steps and conveyor belts not to mention cranes - big dollars we suspect. Two more days ... read more

One more time a-walkin we will go On Sunday (30 August) we ventured forth for the final walk, this time to Positano. Setting off from Grotta Biscotto we were very quickly in the wilds. This is the actual Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) and it is with good reason that it bears this name. Today we saw vistas that are virtually indescribable. Suffice to say, the sense of being suspended somewhere between heaven and the deep, endless expanse of an ultramarine sea was breathtaking. And terrifying. At times on the path there was very little between us and sheer precipices dropping away to I don't know where, because I did not dare get close enough to the edge to look! We encountered more people today, Most were doing the walk the opposite way to ... read more

Positano! It was super easy to get here from Sorrento (and also to get from Positano to Salerno). So easy in fact that looking back, we probably would have done this as a day trip. This was another disappointing AirBnB experience: the entire apartment that we rented at quite a high rate was actually just two rooms, a balcony a common room and NO KITCHEN. I don't know what Italians do in their homes, but an apartment needs to have a kitchen to be a freaking apartment. Anyhoo, within about 15 minutes of our arrival, there was a HUGE downpour. Luckily, we had ensconced ourselves at a local patisserie place and hunkered down with some sweets, drinks and a rousing game of heads up! Then we got some food stuffs and settled into our place. We ... read more

Geo: 40.6299, 14.4863Plan A had been to catch a boat across to Positano but the sea was choppy so no boats were sailing. Plan B was to catch the bus along the narrow winding roads. This took an hour and must be a stressful drive for the bus driver as traffic just doesnt stop and there is very little room for the buses to pass each other. It took an hour to get there and we were dropped off at the top of the town, which is set on a steep hill side. Paths and steps wend their way down to the beach. It is full of funky art galleries and expensive boutiques. We stopped at Max on the way down for a welcome chilled beer. We took the wrong way down to the cathedral but ... read more
