Headed off towards to the Amalfi coast today, via pompei. After several hours of driving, we arrived in Pompei and had lunch before entering the ruins. Once we got into the ruins, I could fully appreciate why the ancient city is so popular amoungst tourists and historians alike. The way they town has been craved out from the ash, still in remarkable condition, really is a rare insight into ancient history. One of the things in Pompei that amazed us all was there were these little drinking fountains made out of large marble rocks. You could actually see in the worn down section where the romans had used there hands to support themselves whilst drinking. The remenants of human acticity, some 2000 years ago really is amazing! Anyway after Pomei we set off for Castellebate which ... read more

Hi Everybody! Well, Its been a very eventful few days! I picked up Holly in Rome and we immediately headed for the Amalfi Coast. I have to say, its beautiful. Our first stop was the Conca Azzurra which was located between Amalfi and Positano. A very weird, but very interesting place. It was beautiful, but tiny. We were on a cliff, and we had private access to the Mediterranean, which is VERY precious in this part of the world. We spent the first night in Amalfi, having Dinner and touring St. Andrews Cathedral. Did you know that St. Andrew was buried in Amalfi?? We didnt! He was a fascinating character, the first apostle of Jesus Christ. He traveled all the way to modern Russia, preaching the gospel. He ended up being crucified, (a shame!) but as ... read more

Il Paradiso Minori is a small village filled mainly with locals and not too many tourists. This was great for us as we became part of the community very quickly. The fruit and veg shop, the butcher, the baker, the entoca(wine shop) all became our friends as we shopped daily for our needs. Every day we would hit the beach for a few hours and swim in the crystal clear Mediterranean. The kids had a ball on some kayaks while Mark would do his gelati swim a lap across and back of the bay front, once finished he felt he deserved a gelati. The beach was about 500m long. We never needed a watch because the church bells went off every 15 minutes which we really loved. Mark and I found another wonderful pasticceria where we ... read more

We had decided to head across to Sicily for a week as we had heard it was an interesting place. On our way to the ferry we stopped at Palmi, another coastal village. My grandmother used to go there for her holidays from Plati. It was a beautiful spot but the town was very busy! We were a little sad leaving Calabria as we felt we should have spent longer there. Sicily was a new adventure…in more ways than we thought. We arrived in Messina just after lunch and had planned to head down the east coast towards Taomina and Siracusa. We drove along the coast disappointed at the beaches and towns we went through. Taomina was very busy and situated on top of a very high hill. We drove briefly through and decided it was ... read more

“Oh my God, it’s a dam slalom course!” Franchesca swore, as we wound our little Ford up the back side of the mountain. She then mumbled a new mantra “I hate you” meaning me, under her breath. I smiled and bit my lip, trying hard to keep my always miss understood nervous laughter in check. I sunk lower in my seat, deciding it was best not to tell her what lay ahead. This was the really easy part. Once we got over the mountain the training wheels would have to come off. Having been to Positano before, I had knowingly risked our friendship and quite possibly our lives for one of the most dangerous, but beautiful drives on earth. As we exited the tunnel at the crest of the mountain, the deep blue of the Med ... read more

Hi Guys, Well I have finally made it and I am in Italy. I flew into Naples Sunday and caught the bus direct to Sorrento. Sorrento is nice, but a rather large city, something I have been dying to get away from! So after a night in a WET tent in Sorrento I am now in Gorgeous Positano. This place is so beautiful. Words can't begin to describe it! It is set high on the hills above the most magnificent blue water. You wander down cobble stone paths to reach the beaches and main town, and it's truly worth the 15 minutes of stairs. Well I say that, but had a big fall coming home last night and have taken a fair chunk of skin off my knee and foot....Italian wine for you! So far I ... read more

Amalfi Is Beautiful I must lie. I am not currently in Amalfi. I was never in 'Amalfi' ... just on the Amalfi Coast! I'm in Salerno. It was not on the list, and I forget how to add to the list. I've had a pretty good few days. I met some great people in Florence - Kate, Mike, and Mark - and partied the last two nights I had in Florence with them. Kate is originally from Hawaii, but is studying in upper New York State, so not too far from me. Mike and Mark are from Northern California, so farther. We went out for dinner the first night we met, and then to a bar. It was a Monday night, so apparantly, no clubs were on as they had closed the bottom level that contained ... read more

We lucked out with a great day of sunshine so we headed out to the little island of Capri. The ferry was full so we met up with a great Aussie couple, Brad and Karli, who were also looking for a ride and got a private boat (definitely the way to go!). Again, not a place for motion sickness people. Capri . . . I wish I could have stayed for many days purely for the lemon gelato. This town definitely caters to the rich and rich. You can pretty much find every designer label within a 5 minute walking radius. It’s a good thing I can’t travel with a bigger bag or I would be carrying a whole lot of new shoes around! Just say NO to shopping!... read more

Sorry for the delay, keeping this up to date is more of a challenge than I thought. So here we go . . . My sister Valerie joined me in Italy. We met in Naples and then headed directly down to Positano, a beautiful town on the Amalfi Coast. Land of the crazy drivers and lots of hairpin turns on a cliff. Not the best place to be if you tend to get car sick. We arrived at Hotel California (appropriate) and headed off to dinner. Halfway through dinner a downpour of rain and lots of thunder and lightening hit. I realized this happened my first night in Turkey and my first night in Greece. Strange. I’ll take a moment here to say that I will try to not go on and on about the food ... read more
