After a hectic couple of days in Naples, we really needed a break so decided to take the hydrofoil directly to Sorrento and hopefully spend a few days at the beach. The weather was still as hot as it gets, the only way we've been surviving is with a siesta in the afternoon. Sorrento is a small resort town jammed halfway up a cliff about an hour's ferry ride or an hour and a half's train ride from Naples. The town itself was a very tourist oriented town, expensive stores, restaurants advertising the 'menu touristico' and generally not a lot of Italian being spoken. Well we were in Roma, but I didn't get to update. That place is just amazing. Everywhere you look there is something ancient....well at least in the "Ancient City." The first day we explored the Paletine Hill...the ticket to this was valid at the Colesium. That was very interesting. But not as nice as the Roman Forum...which was free...go figure. We also saw the Trajan Column. The campsite had a pool...so of course we partook. Oh and in less than an hour we saw two people get their wallets stolen. We held our bags very close to our bodies and survived intacked. We went to the Coliseum the next day. It was very nice. The rich and famous know how to holiday - Capri is beautiful. We only had a day there (downside of being shepparded around in an organized tour). Got to see quite a bit though. We got on a boat tour around the island the minute we got off the ferry. I originally wasn't planning on visiting blue grotto (venus flytrap, tourist version). Couldn't help myself in the end though. It was just amazing watching these guys guide the tiny rowboats into miniscule hole. The entrance is completely covered by every wave, and the buys piloting the row boats have to time their entrance (via a pull-chain) perfectly. Capri is truly a romantic island just a short cruise from the Sorrento peninsula. Once again, the pictures below tell the story better than anything. This was the most crowded port we visited and we were told it was actually pretty early in the season and not bad at all. The scenery and the tour up the mountains in a convertible taxi and then the chairlift were really pretty spectacular. The shopping was crowded and we only had the patience to buy a couple of things, a linen shirt for me and some perfume from the perfumery where Liz Taylor used to buy her perfume before she had her own line (per Suzy Gershman, of course). Travelling from Naples airport down to Amalfi must be one of top ten drives you can imagine. From the sweeping Bay of Naples to the sheer drop of the cliffs along the Amalfi coastline there is enough scenery of sheer beauty to take away anyones breath.First call was the historical Roman ruins at Pompeii with its magnificent roads and architecture,columns and remnants ,I spent the morning but could have easily stayed all day,best way to see Pompeii is on your own or in couples , a local guide will offer his services but are costly (and pushy)so amble round in your own time. Onto Sorrento for a couple of nights b/b at Hotel De La Ville with a great rooftop pool over looking the Bay of Naples and the threatening Mount Vesuvius and in the distance ... read more
