Good morning everyone, Yesterday we left Connemara and went on the scenic drive to Doolin, along the western cost of Ireland. Along the way we stopped in Galway, which I now think of as Ireland's college town. The average age of most of the people there seemed to be about 23 -- lots of schoolkids and students. There was also a lovely pot smell through much of the city... good to see that some things about college towns are universal. We didn't do much other than wander around -- there isn't a ton to do or see in Galway, though the shopping streets are nice and typically European. There was also a fantastic cathedral (St. Nicholas) with green marble floors and a beautiful golden altar... and in a side alcove with a mosaic of Christ's resurrection, ... read more

Im very proud to say I've stuck out my time in my hostel here in Galway and I must say, its nicer than some hotels or B&B's that I've been in! WOuld have no problem recommending this place or staying here again! Started my time in Galway off with a Galway sightseeing bus, gotta love these things as they show you all the sights and tell you a great deal of history to go with it! Went out of a tour today as well to Connemara and Kylemore Abbey... Connemara is a region here in Ireland, no one's really sure where it starts and where it ends but its somewhere here in County Galway and Kylemoore Abbey is an old castle that is now used as a boarding school for girls... Its well and truely hidden ... read more

When last we left you, we'd been exploring the Connemara area. On our last day in Connemara, we saw some really spectacular sights. On Monday, we drove from Clifden out to Cong, in Co. Mayo. Cong is famous for being the place where much of "The Quiet Man" was filmed (and boy is the town milking it-- there's "Quiet Man" everything for sale there) and the area is very scenic. We walked around the old Cong Abbey and gardens, which were truly lovely. We had lunch in town and walked around the quaint streets. Then, we drove out to Ashford Castle. The castle is a five star hotel (famous for being the place Pierce Brosnan got married) and it is so incredible. As commoners and not posh hotel guests, we were not actually allowed inside the ... read more

We're here! We arrived in Shannon on Saturday and drove from the airport to Clifden, in Connemara. Kevin got used to driving on the left really quickly, but Erin never really got used to the brushes with death every time another car passed on these tiny, tiny roads. The scenery in Co. Clare, where the airport is, is sort of typically Irish-- long, green meadows, rock walls, cows in pastures. Then we arrived in Connemara (Co. Galway) and were blown away by the beauty of this area. There are lakes and hills everywhere, peat bogs, Connemara ponies, wildflowers... it's just spectacular. We're staying in Clifden, the largest town in the area. Like every Irish town, there's one bar to every four or five inhabitants. We went to one of the more popular spots last night and ... read more

Like a bunch of cattle, thats how the trainride here felt... Well Im here in Galway now, in a hostel again but this hostel seems so much better than Dublin! For one I have my own private bathroom which is always a plus, also my room is on the 4th floor so should be much quieter, and this hostel has a lift!! Half the hotels.B&B's. guesthouses I've stayed in havent had lifts so that was a pleasant surprise! Only downside is you cant drink the water here in Galway, major scandal and major problems with the water but its not too bad, all the shops are selling bottles of water halfprice so its not too bad.. Train ride to Galway was a nightmare! HAd to perch on my suitcase for 2hours, thats how busy the train ... read more

IRELAND, APRIL 20 - MAY 5, 2007 HEADFORD, COUNTY GALWAY Note: Click on photos to enlarge - particularly helpful with route map. As many of you know, Bernard is finishing his Ph.D. under the supervision of the National University of Ireland at Galway (NUIG). In April of each year all the Ph.D. candidates are invited to Galway for a week of meetings with their supervisors, to present their research thus far, have social outings, dinners, etc. A very nice week, after which Bernardo was very jazzed about finishing his dissertation.* Bernie’s father’s family is from County Mayo (both of Bernie’s grandparents were born there), which borders County Galway. We actually stayed in Headford, County Galway, but were only a few miles from the Galway/Mayo border and closer to his family than where Bernie’s Ph.D. seminar was ... read more

Galway may have horrible water, but the shopping is great! Gabriel had to leave us yesterday, so today our tour guide was a Aran Island native named Collin. We left Galway with Dublin as our destination, but of course there were stops on the way (and lots of history). The day was so beautiful and we managed to get a little sun while at an Irish monastery. There was a temple Kelly at this monastery, and lots of grave stones. We stopped in a town called Moate for lunch at a Pub (soo good!) and then headed back into Dublin. Again we stayed with Kristen's friend Soren at Griffith College, so we caught a bus to get out there. The bus trip was an interesting experience! We saw the temper of an Irish women flare ... read more

For our last API excursion of the semester, our group headed to the Delphi Activity Centre in Connemara for an overnight stay and the opportunity to test our athletic skills. There were different options for outdoor activities - we could choose surfing or team games . . . I stuck with the ones that got me off the ground. Being addicted to anything rock climbing/high ropes related, I was super excited to get on the Jacob's Ladder and the high ropes course in the morning, and then hit a climbing wall and zip line in the afternoon. The Jacob's Ladder was the most challenging for me . . . it consists of about 5 horizontal wooden beams, hung parallel at increasingly greater distances as you work your way to the top; my friend Kevin and ... read more

Tammy here: We spent the day getting on tour bus to see the Burren and Cliffs of Moher (better known to us as the Cliffs of Insanity from the Princess Bride movie). It was fraiken cold. Turns out the Burren are a lot of rocks and the Cliffs are cliffs. We did go inside the very cool Aillwee Cave where the guide had us turn off all our cameras and cell phones and then shut off the lights so where in pitch darkness. Totally no lights. He left the lights off just long enough so it starts to get uncomfortable like he might have left us there. We also saw a cool ancient burial ground that looked like a mini Stonehenge. One of the best things on this trip has been watching Jackie's self-proclaimed narcolepsy ... read more

Tuesday, March 20 Tammy here- We spent the day visiting pubs and shopping around in Galway. With all the Irish knitted sweaters in every shop, it's funny how you never see anyone Irish wearing them. I dragged the gang to a shop I'd found on the Internet that says it was the originator of the Claddagh ring. Of course, there where about three other shops advertising themselves as the originals too, but I had read about this place on the Internet and everyone knows if it's on the Internet, it's true. We all got sized up and Ed and I got all romantic and purchased our rings together. All other shopping looks like stuff you'd find at a Target store display with Guinness or shamrocks or big green top hats. We did go into a ... read more
