Steve here: Travel day to Galway. The roads are a bit straighter than they were going south, so travel goes much faster. On the way, Ed decides that we will go to a third Waterboys show in Limerick, as long as the drive from Galway to Limerick isn’t prohibitive. We decide to drive the Ring of Kerry today. This is a 170km (105 mile) tourist trail that travels through some of Ireland’s most beautiful scenery. It turns out to me more of the Sliver of Kerry, as we drive part way in, and backtrack our way out before heading to Galway. It is not that the Ring as beautiful as advertised, but the roads are narrow, the weather is horrible and visibility isn’t exactly 100%. While on the Ring of Kerry we make two stops. ... read more

. . . and St. Paddy´s Day will never be the same again . . . API (and my cousin, Bennett, who came in from Scotland for the weekend) celebrated the 17th in style. We started out with a potluck brunch (if you can call 9am brunch), and then headed into the city center for the parade. Of course, the sky opened up (as we´ve heard it always does on St. Paddy´s day in Galway), so we changed our plans and spent the entire afternoon in Taaffe´s pub listening to some traditional Irish music (and, of course, singing along when we could . . . I´m still working on learning all those pub songs). It turned into a party with all of our closest friends . . . even the ones who are strangers.... read more

Monday was our last day in Galway. The students had their final lessons, and I took the chance to walk round Galway one more time. There are so many things to see. When you take your time you will see many quaint shops, picturesque restaurants, and colourful pub signs. Despite its size, Galway is one of the fastest growing cities in Europe, some parts of Galway still look like an old fishing village. In the evening the students had their last dinner with their hostfamilies, Irish home cooking, like lasagne and chips, which they didn't really like. We, the teachers, however, could choose from the finest restaurants for our dinner. That evening we went to Conlons safood restaurant and oyster bar, where had the famous Galway bay oysters and excellent fish and chips. Afterwards we went ... read more

On Sunday we all went on an excursion to the Burren Nationalpark and the Cliffs of Moher, a must see when you are in the area. The weather was quite nice, however cold. Our first stop was at the Dunguaire Castle at Kinvarra. On we went through the heart of the Burren, which is a geologically and botanically extraordinary area visited by tourists and scientists alike. We stopped at the dolmen, a burial site from the stoneage. We also stopped at the cathedral of Kilfenara, where we saw the fascinating Celtic High Cross. We had our lunch break at Lahinch Beach, which is famous with surfers from all over the world. The surf is excellent for surfing there all year round. The overwhelming highlight of the tour were the Cliffs of Moher. Despite the strong wind ... read more

Hello again, after a great and interesting weekend I have time now to update my blog. Friday was a day of mixed weather, however, I could still take some nice photos while the students were having their lessons. Just have a look, there are many colourful art galleries, and quaint shops in the historic part of the town. One special feature of the town is the river Corribb, which runs through the town into the sea.... read more

On Monday, 26 February, our last day in Galway, we went to school again. There we played a quiz with David and also got a price for our good knowledge. After our break we learned something about the history of Ireland and that was a little bit boring. But I liked to go to school there because we had only English and it was great fun with the teachers. After school we drove home to pack our clothes and other things and in the evening we got our meal. On our last evening we ate Tortillas and this was very good. At about 10 o’clock p.m. our host dad Alan brought us back to the school, where we stayed until 1.30 a.m. Then the coach arrived and we started our journey back home to Austria. At ... read more

On Saturday the students had their day off, so we teachers decided to visit Inishmore, the biggest of the Aran Islands. From Galway City we went to Rossaveal by coach, where we boarded the ferry to the island. First we actually wanted to exercise and walk round the Island, soon, however, we were persuaded by the driver of one of the many minibuses driving tourists round the island to get on his bus. And it was a good decision because walking round the island would have taken us the whole day and we would have missed the ferry back. The bus took us to Dun Aonghasa, a 2500 year old fort standing on 300 feet cliffs. We walked up to this interesting site and had a great view. The weather was also quite nice, it only ... read more

On Sunday, 25 February, we had an excursion to the Cliffs of Moher. We got up at 8 o’clock and at 9.15 the bus to the cliffs arrived. On the way to the cliffs we saw some old castles, many sheep, few houses and many stones. Before we got to the cliffs we made a break at Lahinch beach. It was full of stones and the waves were very big. After one hour we got on the bus and drove the last piece of the way to Cliffs of Moher. We had very good weather and sometimes also the sun was shining but on the cliffs it was so windy. It was wonderful there and the cliffs there are 120 and sometimes also 300 meters high. It was very interesting and this was the greatest day ... read more

On Saturday, 24 February, we made a shopping tour. We got up at 9 o’clock in the morning and had an appointment in front of the Eyre Square Centre at 10.30. We went shopping until 13.30 and ate something from McDonalds. There were so many shops and I bought some souvenirs for my mum and my dad. I liked to go shopping there because the clothes were not so expensive as in Austria. At 2 o’clock we drove home by bus and the rest of the day we stayed at home and did nothing. We got up at 9 o’clock. Then we went into the city by bus. At half past ten we met in front of the Eyre Square Center. Next we went shopping. I bought some souvenirs for my family, friends and for me. ... read more
