When planning our trip, we knew our layover in Iceland on the return would be a welcome bonus. After a 4 1/2 hour trip from Paris, we reached Iceland at 9:30 am. We had 7 hours before flight home just enough time to see the famous Blue Lagoon. There was a bus outside the small airport to take passengers to and from the Blue Lagoon so we bought tickets and set out on the 10:15 bus. It took about an hour to get there after all stops, 40 minutes longer than advertised. It was a rainy day and we did our best to see the terrain of the fascinating island best we could. When we reached the Blue Lagoon, we could see the lava rock terrain and geothermal waters. We had never been to such an ... read more

What it is about Stewart and Jen, I don't know, but since we met them, they have somehow been a catalyst to ensure Justin and I have amazing summer vacations. Last summer it was our drive around the United States, largely for the purpose of attending their wedding in California. While most of our friends took an airplane there, Justin and I opted for a more leisurely mode of transportation...the automobile. While last summer it was radio blaring, windows down kind of fun, this trip will be entirely different. In fact, the automobile will be our most rare form of transportation for the next 2.5 weeks. Instead, we will be walking, training (railing?) and flying. None of which involve the radio blaring... What it will involve is spending 1 week with Jen and Stewart touring Iceland ... read more

We have a new dear companion, and her name is Suzy. She is small but full of energy, and raring to go whenever we are. She's a Suzuki 4door automatic and we can't get enough of her. Thank goodness for the sweet angel Icelander at the Budget rent a car, who upgraded us from a manual to automatic free of charge, allowing Brian and I to trade out driving responsibilities. Thus far, the workload has been entirely on his shoulders. Yesterday we drove around the Golden Circle......a favorite circuit just outside of the city with some of Iceland's most photographed areas. Our first stop was Pingvellir (pronounced THingvellir...we think), an old meeting place for Norsemen, and Parliamentary sight. Here you can also see the tectonic plates sliding against one other (we didn't, but supposedly you can). ... read more

We arrived in Iceland this morning, incredibly grateful to be met with a gust of the impossibly clean and fresh arctic air and to finally have the chance to stretch the kinks out of our necks and cramps out of our legs after hours of foiled attempts at stealing a few seconds of sleep while we crossed the Atlantic in the world's most uncomfortable seat assignments. Given the series of unexpected events that had unfolded in the 10 or so hours prior to us landing in Iceland, it was hard to believe that we had managed to arrive at all. A flight cancellation due to inclement weather had spun our well laid plans into a jumbled mess of hoping we'd have time to get to where we needed to be. What ensued was a series ... read more

The first flying day was quite successful. As usual, when the planning is particularly chaotic, the actual events are very smooth. As of yesterday, all the flight planning for the trip to Reykjavik were ready - I found a flyable route through England and Scotland, and decided to have s top in Wick, on the Northern tip of Scotland. And the weather forecasts looked fair as well - some clouds, but no serious problems to be expected. So I filed my flight-plans last night, and all was ready for an early departure this morning. But when I checked the weather this morning, nothing was well - WIck had clouds so low that even an instrument arrival was not possible, and the outlook for the day was not positive either. And all England under clouds and rainy ... read more

1. Hottest and coldest – snow mountains and glacier VS geiser Iceland is an amazing place that you can find the mountains covered with snow for tens of thousands years + the boiling water from the geisers in this small country! Even the tape water is from the snow mountains, the nearly the purest water in the world! The taste of the water is a bit wired (sulphur flavour), though, the rich natural mineral is great for our health!! Reminder: NEVER buy bottle distilled water in Iceland as it'll be too stupid to do so! 2. A place for Nothern-Polar Light Seeing Nothern-Polar Light is one of the MUST DO things in life time! I'm overwhelmed when I was so lucky to have seen it twice! The area I stayed was not in the capital, though, ... read more

Sitting at the airport in Iceland preparing to go to London after yet another flight delay. At least this one is only an hour and a half. We got up at 5:45 am to drive around the National Park where we saw hot springs, a geyser, and waterfalls along with goats, horses, mountains, rivers, snow, and oceans. Gena, Sam, Margaret, and I have had so much fun here that it is hard to believe that we are splitting up tomorrow for the week. I am off to Budapest tomorrow afternoon to visit my friend Tanya from Mock Trial who is studying law there and meet up with a few fellow law students currently studying in Budapest. ... read more

Greetings from Iceland! After a long and bumpy start involving the wrong terminal, being stuck on the tarmac for an extra hour in Canada 100 feet from our gate because of Thunderstorms, and running around Canada like crazy people we are here. Iceland is amazing. We got in at 8am and since then have been going non-stop in our tiny Volkswagon Polo which we have already done multiple U-turns and odd off-roading in. We ate at Cafe Aroma in a small town next to the capital and met two English speaking servers who gave us great advice about Iceland including the fact that we were accidently in the wrong city. After figuring out where we were, we went to around a couple of small towns and checked out the Ocean and the President's house. One of ... read more

Reykjavik If there's an Icelandic equivalent to Pele, someone must have given an offering of Icelandic vodka because Grimsvotn stopped spewing, the ash cloud over Iceland headed for Scotland and I was able to make my flight with only four hours of delay. Reykjavik reminds me of a touristy town in Japan (like Hakone): very cute, clean, and the people are unfailingly polite. And there was a karate dojo in my hotel! I think it's called “Thor's Hammer.” The food in Reykjavik was so fresh, especially the fish. I didn’t try the sushi, but I’m sure it would have been amazing. I made the big mistake of arriving in Reykjavik in shorts and later leaving the hotel without my winter coat. It was less that 10 degrees Celsius (in the 40s in Fahrenheit). ... read more

Iceland was on my “Bucket List” up until October of 2010 when Mark and I, decided to make the journey. The main aim was to see the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) and bath in the Blue Lagoon. Since we were meeting some Travbuddy friends in Reykjavik, we decided to join them on the Golden Circle Tour. The tour includes a total of 5 stops including 2 geothermal power plants. Hellisheidi Geothermal Power plant was our last stop on the Golden Circle Tour. Located in South West Iceland, the power plant is a combined heat and power generator. It sits on one of the largest wet geothermal systems also known as high-enthalpy in Iceland. The purpose of the plant is to meet the increasing demand for electricity and hot water for space heating for the Icelandic people. ... read more
