Zagreb is a modern and beautiful European city. I was surprised to see a vegan fair being held in the main square, since this region is known for its carnivorism. The main square is full of shops, food stands, and there are parks, museums, a farmers' market, and a cathedral nearby.... read more

Kotor is a short bus trip from Budva and is just spectacular. It sits on the northernmost point of a bay that stretches from near Budva almost to the Croatian border. Like Budva, there is a beautiful old town on the coast, but Kotor also has a fortress perched atop a mountain. Climbing to the fortress offers dramatic views of the city, the bay and the surrounding mountains. There were some brave locals near the top selling cold drinks. They must be in great shape hauling their coolers full of drinks up the mountain everyday. I hope they get a lot of customers to reward them for their efforts. ... read more

After the intensely urban Belgrade, it was refreshing to fly into Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro. My flight was delayed so I got in late and didn't have time to walk around the city as I planned, but the next morning I had a beautiful view from my hotel room. I caught the bus to Budva, a very popular resort town on the coast. Our minibus went through winding mountain roads navigated carefully by our driver. The old town of Budva was about 30 minutes walk from my hotel, but most of that walk was along the coast on a touristy promenade. ... read more

Belgrade is a very urban city. I find it to be quite a lot like most US cities--function over form. People seem to work hard and play hard. The city is famous for its nightlife and there are indeed so many restaurants open 24 hours and cafes and bars closing very late. But the city is also full of parks and has some nice historical sites. One of the best things about this city is that two rivers meet here, the Danube and the Sava. All along these rivers are barges that serve as restaurants or nightclubs. There are also islands that are recreation areas. One surprising thing is that the city has a botanical garden with a beautiful Japanese bridge and pond. There is also a Chinese market but it very much caters to Serbian ... read more

I didn't realize how much I would like Sofia. It is such a tranquil city with a manageable center, full of cafes and good restaurants, parks and streets lined with trees that help keep the city cool in summer. The food was so good, especially the grilled vegetables at Happy's. Apparently sushi is quite popular in Sofia. The parks are a very popular place for Bulgarians to hang out and in the evening they are packed. Even some of the very small parks had beer gardens. One odd thing is the trams stop right in the middle of the street without any safety platform for people to stand on. Doesn't seem very safe. There was a free outdoor concert in the park, which was quite a major event with a full orchestra. It was sponsored by ... read more

Went to see the magnificent ruins of Ephesus near the Aegean coast. I spent three hours exploring the great Greek/Roman city. Just when I thought I was done seeing everything, there was another large section to explore. The August heat was pretty intense but luckily there were many concession stands right outside to get a drink or ice cream.... read more

They weren't kidding when they said the Hagia Sofia was converted into a mosque. The new interior design makes it clear that new management had taken over. There are a few remnants of the old Byzantine chuch--mosaics of Christ and Mary. The Blue Mosque is just across the square from the Hagia Sofia. The first time I showed up during prayer times when no visitors are allowed, so I had to come back later. Unfortunately, my pictures of the interiors didn't turn out too well. They definitely don't reflect how pretty both buildings look inside. ... read more

One word I can use to describe Turkey is ornate. From the delicate pastries in the shop windows, to the complex patterns of tiling, to the exquisite porcelain design, a tendency toward the ornate is reflected everywhere. There is a craft fair set up next to the Blue Mosque right now in anticipation of Ramadan that displays all kinds of craft items, including glass painting, porcelain and ceramics, reliefs, textiles, calligraphy, etc. Istanbul sits on the Bosphorus, which links the Sea of Marmara with the Black Sea and joins the European and Asian parts of Istanbul. It's easy to find a boat cruise up and down the Bosphorus from the port at Eminonu. I found one for only ten lira ($7) although it left almost 30 minutes later than the scheduled time. What a bargain for ... read more

I'm a little nervous flying an airline for the first time, but I had such a nice flight on Romanian carrier Tarom. For a one hour flight, they served a small sandwich and a little cake and free wine. Such a difference from most US carriers that only give you a non-alcoholic drink on short flights. The negative thing was that I arrived at the airport four hours early but I was only allowed to check in less than two hours before the flight. There are specific check-in counters for each flight, not just each airline, at Bucharest Otopeni airport. Istanbul really does feel like it was the center of the world. Like London, there are so many sights that it's impossible to see them all in just a few days. I made a valiant effort ... read more

Haystacks, grazing cows, organic corn, fruit trees. Fields against a backdrop of mountains. Horse carts share the road with cars and both have to watch out for cows on the side of the road. We ate fruit straight from the trees and drank milk right after it came from the cow. ... read more
