On Thursday and Friday Fletcher spent most of the days at the Congress where a new council was elected and various committees reported on their activities. I vegged out completely on the Thursday but on Friday morning I walked up to the very vibrant shopping area and square behind the hotel. Here I explored the various shops and buildings. Market stalls had been set up in preparation for St Stephen's day which is Sunday.I bought myself a hat and some make-up, but after an hour and a half I was tired so wandered back to the hotel for a cold drink. Fletcher returned and shared my club sandwich and then in the evening we went to the Local Organisibg Comittee dinner. This was even grander than the opening dinner. It was held in the Museum of ... read more

Since Saturday morning we have been in the beautiful city of Budapest. We still have 12 days to go but most of that will be spent at the track watching the World Athletics Championships. So though we haven't been out all day every day, here is a summary of various aspects of our visit so far. Sightseeing!! Our hotel, the Intercontinental is not far from the amazing Parliament building on the banks of the Danube( which is far from blue!!). We caught a tram , which runs frequently, but got off a stop or two too early. We then walked the short way to view this magnificent building. With towering spires and an imposing dome it is certainly one of the main sights here. We walked around it admiring the statues etc which are on all ... read more

We (Tom, Pam, Sheryl, Daryl & Kerry) decided 3 weeks ago that we were going to book a river cruise with Vikings from Budapest to Amsterdam. We were going to live on a long boat which held under 150 passengers. Vikings have always had a good reputation and since the drought throughout Europe, Vikings was one of the shallowest boats so could continue to sail along the Danube, Mainz & Rhine Rivers. Cabins, entertainment, comfort, food, and standard of organisation where all offer at a high standard. Staff were exemplary. Our cabin person John was fantastic. His day started with making our bed while we are eating our breakfast and cleaned the room, and the last task was turning our bed down and ensuring our room is spotless. John switched music on through the TV and ... read more

Today we are in Budapest, and it is the last day of our cruise. The ship continues on to Bucharest for another week, but most of the passengers get off here. There are options to stay in Budapest for a few more days in a hotel or take a bus to Prague for a couple of days also. But we figured two weeks was enough, and we’re tired and ready to head home. The included tour of Budapest is called a Panoramic View of Budapest. In Viking River Cruise speak Panoramic means you get on the bus, they drive you around the city pointing out some of the sites and then drop you in the center of town for an hour or so to shop and drive you back to the ship. That didn’t sound very ... read more

We arrived at 2 am and checked into the Marriott for a 3 night stay prior to our cruise. A late start the first morning. After a great breakfast we set off to explore Budapest. The hotel is on the Pest side of the Danube ie the flat side. We walked towards the Parliament building and stopped at the Shoe Memorial. This is a memorial to the holocaust victims who were asked to remove their shoes before they were executed as the leather in the shoes was considered valuable. We continued to explore the city and ventured towards Vorosmarty Square where we had lunch followed by an ice cream. There are ice cream stands everywhere. While having lunch we became aware of something we had not encountered in a long time. Smokers sitting at a table ... read more

Last day in Budapest found us in a town outside of the city, a touristy town with a nice beach on the Danube river. Syentendre is a popular place to visit and it is all decked out in style. The shops offer handmade crafts and designer clothes and accessories. There is a museum about marzipan, which was created in this town. There are many other museums, e.g. one for wine, one for art. You could easily spend the day there. Later we had an authentic Hungarian meal at a riverside restaurant which was beside a small ferry taking cars across the Danube to an island where people lived. Such a relaxing location with good food. Then we returned to the city to tour one of the many limestone caves that exist below the city. I watched ... read more

Our morning started with a drive up to Nomafa, a 100 hectares of nature reserve on top of a hill overlooking Budapest. We walked two kilometres to the Elizabeth Lookout tower and went up to see the 360 degree view of the cities and country side. (Remember that I have limited photos from iPad but when I return to Vienna I will post dozens of photos from this trip) A two kilometre waok back to the car was rewarded with a traditional Hungarian food: a langos (see photo). Later in the afternoon we toured the Jewish quarter which is very popular with tourists and celebrities. Then we found the Opera House, Basilica, and parliament buildings. I took tons of photos of grand buildings and street cafes (with other camera). There are many stately universities in this ... read more

Two cities, Buda and Pest, have the Danube river flowing between them. Today we walked 15 kilometres from Pest to Buda and back again. My legs are killing me now. We visited the city market, then the cave church, slowly hiked up to the fortress, visited the palace museum, road a bike on Margaret island, and more. I carried both my camera and iPad, but I didn’t bring the attachment to upload photos from the camera. So here are a few pics from the iPad until I return to Vienna. Then I will create a “best of Budapest” blog. This city has good bones. Buildings are as large and beautiful as Vienna, but several need some polishing to bring them to their former glory. Historic buildings are noble with grand statues and fountains. Streets range from ... read more

We drove to the shores of the largest lake in Europe, lake Balaton. It is 75 kilometres long and around 12 Kim’s wide. As we approachEd the popular holiday beaches, struck me that it was like Tuscany, from photos I have seen. We stopped to join a dozen people snap selfies in a field of poppies, with the lake in the background. The beaches of Balaton are the most visited tourist area in Hungary. I can see why. Wine country on surrounding slopes, sailboats one the lake, warm beaches, and an endless selection of cafes, wine bars ands children’s parks, this place has something good for everyone. Tihany, a beautiful historic village on a hill overlooking the lake might very well be the spiritual heart of Hungary. The tourist presentations are in English, too. I think ... read more
