We hope that everyone had a lovely Easter. It is Easter in Greece this weekend. The ferry to Santorini took three hours. Steve slept solidly for most of that time (moving vehicles have a tendency to have that effect on him). When we arrived at the port, we picked up our hire car and looked at the road that we were going to have to travel. Steep, winding, narrow and slightly intimidating! The drive through Santorini to Oia, where we were staying, was interesting. Part of Santorini seems a bit bleak. Paros did not have that feeling. We were pleased to arrive in Oia where we were met by Maria and Visilli. Visilli carried our bags for us to our cave house. That man is strong and fit. He advised us that he climbs 2000 steps ... read more

...is difficult. The schedule of eating lunch at 3, dinner at 10 and bars and clubs not getting going until 12-1am is rather exhausting when you want to squeeze in some daytime sightseeing also (early too, given that many sights and museums close at 2pm). So finally got down a little time for some more blogging. Been in Greece for 3 weeks already. Slowly made my way through a few places - Chios from Turkey as in the last blog, Delphi, Meteora, Santorini, and now in Paros. My proudest moment in Greece - finding the Chinese consulate in Athens without a map, by metro and foot without a cab. Arrived very early off the ferry from Chios to Athens, so thought to try to find the consulate for my visa. It's far enough from the center ... read more

HAPPY EASTER!!! Not sure you can find a place for a pin on your map for this stop. Our daily program describes Mykonos as follows: “A Greek Island and a mass tourist destination renowned for its cosmopolitan character and its intense nightlife.” We arrived here at noon and are leaving tonight at 7 P.M. We have to use the ship's tenders here, the weather is cool and windy and the sea is rough, so Granny Lynne and I opted to stay on board. The one photo shows you what we missed by not going ashore. Tomorrow we are in Athens, Greece, where we have another private tour scheduled. Love, Granddaddy and Granny Lynne Please click on the links below for the tracking map, the Queen Victoria Bridge webcam and the Queen Victoria tracking map. Chuck and ... read more

Some of the things that I am loving about our Greece experience: Greece is vibrant, chaotic, authentic and charming. People just are. They don’t seem out to impress you and yet they do. Fruit trees growing by the roads on the foot path - you see oranges and lemons growing and smell orange and lemon blossoms when you walk under them. They often have parsley growing at their base. Everyone that we have interacted with have been very friendly and the hotel and restaurant staff speak excellent English and have menus translated into English. It makes our trip that much easier. Organised chaos - the whole vibe so far has been fairly relaxed (except driving and then horns are used with gusto) and it appears that Greece does not have the same level of rules and ... read more

So today we worke up at 6:45 am, to have a little day trip to the Island of Symi we had to be at the Port at 9am leaving the hotel by 8:30. This is what Symi is about. Its an Island of a population of 2606 and just a day trip away from Rhodes, its a rocky and very picturesque island. Ship building and sponge diving are the main economies of the Island. Sponge diving started in the Ottoman times. Whilte on our way to Symi I had a radical amazement moment. It was when I was looking out to the water and it was clear, turquoise and this deep blue nothing like I have ever seen before. It was unbelievable. We made two stops in Symi, the first one was to Moni Taxiarnou Mihail ... read more

Last day in Larnaca and I have to say I am not so sad of saying goodbye. It was an awesome exotic vacation however I think I would love to come back and do Aynapa and Pafos with dad and mom or someone who can drive/ husband or whatever. It was a rainy day waking up not looking forward to possibly getting soaked, we made our way to the bus stop to go down town and the driver looked at me like I was absolutely insane we sat on the promenade had hot coco to die for. Our waiter was adorable never met Americans before and was so fascinated that we made it to Cyprus. So we knew that the entire country decided to go on siesta in the afternoons but we did not realize that ... read more

On Friday we docked in Piraeus, Greece. Not a lot to discuss here until we hopped in a taxi to Athens. If crosswalks and stoplights are a suggestion in Sicily, in Piraeus they must be considered casual artwork. People glance at them but it doesn’t change how they go about their day. We once compared a taxi ride in Mexico to Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride at Disneyland. A taxi ride in Piraeus is more like a non-stop chase in the movie the French Connection. It appeared the taxi driver could not decide which lane he wanted to be in so he drove between lanes for a few miles - weaving must be an art. We’re not sure what the Greek word for Cabrone is (still not sure of the spelling) but he was using it. His ... read more

Woke up at 845 because I originally wanted to visit the Island of Delos, but was way too tired due to going to bed so late that I decided to go back to bed. It was a bummer, but it gives me another excuse to come back to Mykonos in the future:) We slept until about noon then decided to rent some 4 wheelers which were only 15 euro each for 24 hours! So only 7.50 each person since we could fit two people on each. I shared with Domi. And then we had to fill them with gas which ended up being 3 euro each. Such a good deal I thought, and ended up being the best part of the trip. We were able to ride around the entire island on them, and even stopped ... read more

We woke up, saw it was raining, and decided to go back to sleep due to the slight depression that we had since we couldn’t be spending the day at the beach. After we all woke up and were ready, we walked around town, went to a honey store, and got free samples. We bought sesame honey bar, a specialty of Mykonos. We had a big breakfast/lunch at Perfectos. I had a big Greek pizza and some Greek coffee. I ate half the pizza and bought the rest home to save for dinner! We did some pre-gaming in the room and then went out. We met some Greek men in the kabob shop and they told us to come back later to party and go out. So we did- and had a blast! They gave us ... read more

Currently on the ferry to Mykonos. Just tried Greek coffee, quite interesting! I guess its like Bosnian coffee, the grinds are super fine and actually stay in the coffee, they settle to the bottom. We didn’t know this at first and added our sugar and stirred it up and took a sip and wanted to spit it back out. It was like drinking sand or dust! I was about to go complain about it but then Shannon realized that it might be like Bosnian coffee she had tried before. We let the coffee settle for a few minutes, and then tried it again and it was sooo much better once the coffee settled and stuck to the bottom. The water here is to blue! Like a deep, true blue. It’s a bit cloudy right now, but ... read more
