Background: Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001.

I think if someone forced me to choose which island I would go back to of the three we visited, I would say Santorini. It was beautiful. I loved the way the buildings were built up the side and into the side of the cliffs. We took a ship's bus tour, so we got to see a little bit of the island besides Fira and Oia. The tour started with a tender ride to where we met our guide and a bus to take us to our sights. The bus climbed up a road with quite a few switchbacks that I [View Full Entry]

Santorini

Santorini is that picturesque little Cliffside Greek Island that you see in almost any movie that takes place in the Greek Isles. It’s an absolutely gorgeous place where everywhere you look is something to beautiful to take in. It’s quite an effort to get to there though. They have a very tiny dock at the base of the cliff, and that’s about all they have down by the water. So we had to tender there—that means we all pile into very tiny boats that shuttle 50 or so people at a time to the dock. As a crew member this is [View Full Entry]

When the Pacific Princess departed from Patmos, the weather began to change and the ship experienced a few rain showers. But, the next morning arriving in Santorini, the weather had improved under warm and partly cloudy skies. Santorini sits on top of the caldera left from a major volcano which erupted more than 2500 years ago. Its white washed buildings and blue roofs are often used in promotions for Greece because of its scenic beauty. The ship anchored in the harbor not far from two islands which appeared with the past 300 years. Arriving ashore the choice was to ride the [View Full Entry]

Sunset in Santorini, Anita and I gaze lovingly into each others eyes and turn to look out over the crater, that is the habour of Santorini and that may once have been the lost City of Atlantis. Several cruise ships are docked in the beautiful Aegean sea, the sun reflects of the deep blue water and the whitewash houses on the clifftops sparkle in the setting sun. Exhausted after our journey to the top (me walking and Anita on a manic donkey) we sip the last of our drinks ( a mere $40 for a lemonade and Corona) but it doesn't [View Full Entry]

034 - Greece - Santorini, Hydra, and Athens 10/21/08 - 11/25/08 Picture Perfect written by Hannah The question on everyone's mind when we left San Diego for parts unknown was “when will we see you again?”, especially so for my mom. After 9 months of waiting to see where we could meet she finally 'sacrificed' and bought her ticket for Greece. Those who know me will say I live a pretty full life and am involved in many different things, well, I learned it from my mom, and true to form she had 1,001 things to do before she jumped on [View Full Entry]

Hello loved ones and friends, Well, once again I find myself far, far behind on this blog. It's procrastination at its best, people. Now I am going to tell you about the best weekend we have had yet in Greece. Santorini Island...for all of you who might not know what I am talking about, think the place where they filmed Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Mamma Mia. We actually think we found the house where the Sisterhood was filmed. No big deal. Actually, we were freaking out, we were so excited. I think the guys were a little embarrassed to [View Full Entry]

Aegean Dreams in Greece Catching up with our travelers as their plane descends into Athens, Greece shortly after midnight. Arriving in the middle of the night presents its own set of difficulties, such as, transportation and finding a reasonable place to stay. Thinking ahead, we had booked a room on-line before we departed to eliminate at least one of the issues. However, the transportation issue was looking like a daunting task. We had two choices, take a taxi from the airport which was going to cost more than a place to stay, or, try to navigate our way there on the [View Full Entry]

Tash W, and the loads of other tourists all wanting to take the same pictures!
Europe here we come... After leaving Egypt, we were dying for some kind of luxury, familiarity... anything Western really! Tash A was excited as her first 'real' venture into Europe, and a first for both Tash's to Greece. In short, we had 1 week to see all we could of what Greece has to offer! Firstly 2 nights in Athens, The Hermes hotel was ultimate luxury compared to where we had been the previous 2 weeks in Egypt. All booked through Contiki, it's always hard to know what to expect! New Hotel in the Plaka district, close to all restaurants/ cafes/ [View Full Entry]
