This afternoon I took the bus to Akrotiri to see the archeological site of town that was destroyed by volcanic explosion nearly 4,000 years ago, but survived enough to be dug up now. I took photos of the landscape so you can see the height of the ash and pyroclastic fallout from that explosion. Lucky for us, there was a water way that, over time, eroded and exposed this town. I'm going to upload the pictures and put notes on just a few of them for now. I'm tired but happy. I've covered every site on my list. Perhaps the biggest thrill was walking amongst the building of this archeological dig. I sat on a bench and just breathed it all in. And I got away with touching a few walls. *chuckling outloud* I did stop ... read more

Took the bus to Oia this morning, seeking THAT photo of the three blue tops of churches. Yeah, I spent weeks working on a puzzle of Oia this winter. It had too many blue pieces, and after I completed the town with its famous blue-domed churches and landscape, I gave up on the blue sky and clouds. This morning, I was eager to see those private balconies with pretty coloured gates and flowers in terracotta pots surrounding the churches. Nobody mentioned the hair-pin turns around steep cliffs during the drive to Oia. Whew! I did not have a window seat, but did try to snap a couple of photos. On the way back, the bus took the lower road where we could see lovely beaches and parched farmland. At first I thought I was on the ... read more

I have this sign on my study wall. Thus traveling to Santorini, originally called Thera, has been high on my bucket list. I blasted through the museum because they close at 3:30. I took lots of photos and will enjoy them when I get home. It was amazing to stand beside the real wall hanging or pithoi, rather than see copies in books or shops. I could touch the large pots on display (until the museum guarded yelled at me). *smile* When buying my ticket, I had a bit of an argument about the name 'Minoans'. She was adament that the people on this island were not Minoans. I guess everyone tries to claim, interpret and defend their ancient history. I bet she isn't even born on this island. *chuckling* We did agree that Minoans were ... read more

Today I put myself in that classic postcard view. I took the bus to Fira and walked over to the caldera view. OMG Stunning! I just had to have an expensive coffee on the edge of an expensive restaurant balcony. Then I ordered a Greek salad, to extend the stay, though the waitresses were uber friendly and would have let me stay. There were people waiting for these premier tables. It is surreal, sitting there, overlooking the caldera that exploded and destroyed the Minoan city. I wonder how many people know this history as they admire the view. A really sad fact is that over fifty percent of the people sitting in this beautiful balcony with outstanding views were on their cell phones. Freaks! What a sad lot. There was a girl around ten who sat ... read more

Over the last few weeks I have been to Santorini a few times, since our ship stops here every week. This time I decided to try something different and signed up for a visit to the Ouzo Museum and Distillery. Once we got to the Canava Museum we were greeted by the owner, a very friendly lady. She gave us some insights into the history of the area and into the process of Ouzo and Wine making . The museum is very small, but it was very interesting to see how they made wines and ouzo back in the days. After the visit of the museum, we made it to the tasting room, probably the highlight of the tour. We tried three different kinds of ouzo, the regular one, which taste a lot like sambuca, and ... read more

I was really happy when I was assigned to join a hike in Santorini, because most of the tours lately were bus or city walking tours. When it said volcano hike I prepared myself for long day out, but it turned out to only be a very small volcano and the hike was only over an hour. I was still very happy to get off the ship to go on a little hike. Since we are anchored just outside the cliffs of Santorini we had to take a boat to the island of Nea Kameni. It was a really pretty sail boat, almost like a pirate boat. It took us about 30 minutes to get to the island and from there we walked up the hill to see the small creator. The walk itself was not ... read more

I finally figured out how to get to Santorini: ferry early morning to Naxos then high speed ferry. So I scheduled my friendly taxi driver at 5 am, got up, dressed, grabbed my backpack and left my humble cave. Soon after my start down the stone stairs, I full on fell forward, with no way to stop due to being loaded down. Hard on my knee, twisted my ankle and scraped my elbow. Great start. A woman walked by about 40 seconds later and asked if I needed help with my bags.... I just hung my said and said no thanks. Ferry to Naxos The ferry departed at 7 am and it was pretty easy. I booked business class which was a minimal increase, and was able to pass out the two hours in the lounge ... read more

So, after spending nearly three weeks in Greece, I tried many wines. And I visited several wineries in Santorini, known for their famous Assyrtiko wines. BTW, it is pronounced "us-EAT-teeko" and has a definite "volcanic" taste, in other words, a quite pronounced minerality, for lack of a better term. Karen at Winespeed is spot on about this wine: Assyrtiko, the white wine that brought world attention to the stunningly beautiful volcanic island of Santorini, is made in several styles today. But my favorite has always been the original style—fresh, pure, bone-dry, and made without the merest trace of oak. Santo Wine’s Assyrtiko—from 60- to 80-year-old vines —is exactly that, a wine that captures the lemons-and-salt-air crispness that Assyrtiko is known for. Sparks of minerals and acidity light up the wine, making it extra delicious with seafood. ... read more

Leaving Paros on the way back to Santorini for another 2 days before our flight back to Tel Aviv, I was happy to have one final glimpse of lovely Naxos when we stopped briefly in the port. The heatwave had also followed us back to Santorini and we were surprised that after barely 2 weeks, there were a lot more people. We decided not to hire a car and to stay around our hotel. We also had to start thinking about covid again, to get a PCR test and to fill in some online forms. We stayed in Fira this time at a 3-star hotel behind the town, facing the sunrise. It was old and very basic and the room we chose faced the street with a lot of noise from passing bikes. (The ATVs are ... read more

Our last trip overseas was in the Peloponnese in October 2019. It seemed fitting that our first trip away post-Covid should also be to Greece. I hardly believed we were going until we were actually on the way, flying to the Greek islands -- first stop Santorini, a place I never expected to see. It's a dream destination for many but is usually overrun with tourists. A visit now seemed like a once in a lifetime opportunity. Did we beat the crowds? Not exactly. We weren't alone, the Americans and French were already there but in numbers much less than usual. Usually there are a few cruise ships anchored offshore. Sometimes three or four of them at the same time. That means about 10,000 people deposited on this small island all at once. Unbelievable! When you ... read more
