Background: Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001.

Ok so it's been a while since I've written...I'm sorry!! So I guess I'll start with Santorini even though that was a week ago. Becca and I took a 9 hour ferry ride to Santorini which arrived at 2 in the morning. I was sooooo happy to get out of Athens, it's just too dirty. We didn't realize that the boat had docked almost until it was leaving, as they didn't make any announcement, so we were running frantically around the ship, otherwise it would have taken us to Rhodes. The people from the hostel picked us up and they were [View Full Entry]

31 May 2009 I’m going to have to get more imaginative than just Wow. How about Holy Cow… Santorini is one of those places that you see incredible pictures of in brochures and on postcards. Surprisingly enough, it’s all there for you to photograph too. It’s Greece’s answer to Positano in Italy. Whitewashed buildings all perched precariously on top of one another, only these ones are doing it perched 100+ metres above the water on the edge of a volcano crater. The old port is located below the main town of Fira, and there are three ways to get up t [View Full Entry]

I write today from the Greek island of Santorini...a friend of mine from Viterbo, Emily, and I arrived in Greece on Thursday evening, and we are staying for 4 days. We spent the first day in Athens seeing the Acropolis and the National Archaeological Museum. Yesterday we caught a ship early in the morning and for 8 hours looked at the sea and passing islands until we reached our destination, Santorini, around 4 in the afternoon. We found a hostel where we dropped off our things, and in the evening we used the island bus system to reach the city of [View Full Entry]

After returning from Barcelona, I met up with my friend Whitney and she and I went to Santorini for two days. It was short, but it was amazing! We left on Tuesday evening and arrived in Santorini around 2 in the morning. We hadn't arranged a place to stay for Tuesday night, so after we got to the port we found a place and bargained the price to something we felt was reasonable. We stayed in Fira for the night and in the morning rented an ATV for the next two days. We then began the adventure of finding the hotel [View Full Entry]

Today we would be daring. We would live on the crest of fear and redefine danger. Today, we would rent a quad-bike. Quad-bikes look a lot more unstable and unsafe than they really our. Now, before you roll your eyes back and think 'what wimps' - please remember, we had our 1 year old baby with us - no space for a baby seat on a quad-bike. Of course, once we realized that the maximum speed of these clunky little beasts was a mere 25km/h, we threw all safety worries out the window, strapped Sesame into her front pack, and away [View Full Entry]

May 8/09 We wake up later than ever today, and at 11AM, we head out to RENT ATV 4-WHEELERS! so excited! At Fira, we test drive them, and absolutely loving them, we rent 3. They're exactly like driving a car, but without gas pedals. Brakes and accelerators were controlled solely by the hands. But being able to drive these vehicles on our own, ANYWHERE on Santorini gave us the feeling of total freedom! We could stop anywhere we wanted, go anywhere we wanted, and feel the wind beneath our helmet-ed hair! Funny thing, while Michelle, Ruby and I got an ATV [View Full Entry]

Hey all! So i'm in Mykonos right now, and it's literally just beach + party. ...sooo since i REALLY don't want to tan anymore (i'm hideous right now. seriously. HIDEOUS). i'm in town right now at an internet cafe, surrounded by teenage Greek boys playing World of Warcraft and Counterstrike and moving around me yelling at each other in Greek. So here's my blog part for Santorini! For those who have been keeping up, you guys are awesome! =) I hope you all have been enjoying it! I put up pics for some of the blogs, so go back to check [View Full Entry]

HUGE BLOG ALERT. May want to take breaks. ---- May 7/09. Today was a BIG day! We paid for a tour to Nea Kameni (a volcano island), Palea Kameni (hot springs), Thirassia island (small port town), and Oia (most beautiful town in Santorini, seen in sisterhood of the travelling pants 1 AND 2). BUT Karen is SUPER sick with a fever, so unfortunatley she had to stay back at the hostel. We get picked up by a large tour bus, then off we go. We head to the port via a sloping, winding, small road - half petrified at crushing oncoming, [View Full Entry]

We skipped breakfast so we would not have to get up quite so early for our sailing today with Ted Stathis of Santorini Sailing. We also had our bright little yellow Fiat Panda delivered from what turned out to be a much better experience that Thrifty. Although on the last it all turned out good and the guy told me there was no issue as they had just missed it on the review. I would have to believe though that if I had merely acquiesced to their pointing out the "new" scratches, I would most likely have been charged for it, [View Full Entry]

In a half awake stupor . . . We likely will not have internet access, at least none that will be reasonably priced, so I will post this to let you know we are leaving tomorrow morning very early for Santorini on Aegean Airlines, but thankfully the first day is all about lounging around the hotel's pool and private beach. Life will be hard, but we will figure out a way to persevere. Frankly, we really need a break from all of this vacationing. Really. Jennifer got a box of Leonidas chocolates, they are Belgian, yes, but they sell them all [View Full Entry]
