Issy's still feeling lousy so breakfast is short lived. She says that I should go on the sailing cruise that we've booked by myself and she'll stay in bed. I reluctantly agree. We're driven along the narrow road around the rim of the caldera to the village of Oia. I remember Kostas telling us that the drivers here all constantly play Tetris with their mirrors, and all the vehicles along the way slow down as we pass them so that the mirrors only shave each other rather than being sheared off. The road from Oia down to its port on Ammoudi Bay takes steepness, windiness and narrowness to new levels. The Bay's lined with restaurants and the scene is stunning. The town is about 300 metres straight above us on the cliff top, and I'm not ... read more

Issy‘s cold is an absolute doozy and she wakes up feeling only very marginally better. We wander along the path towards Fira in search of nourishment. I launch into a concoction known as the ”Greek Breakfast“, which seems to just consist of three eggs. The name would seem to imply that a significant proportion of the local population munches its way through this every morning, which leaves us wondering where they get the eggs from. We haven't seen any chickens here yet. I hope the eggs come from chickens. I have coffee that the spoon stands up in, and I think that I'll probably now be awake for several days. We wander into and out of shops and then into the town’s spectacularly ceilinged main church. Unlike yesterday's monastery chapel it also seems to have some ... read more

Issy's got a really bad cold, which sucks for her. She‘s taking every medication known to man plus some that haven't been invented yet, but all to no avail. I head off along the clifftop path towards Fira town while she rests up. There’s a cruise ship in and it gets progressively more crowded as I proceed. I hear a lady complaining that she has to climb too many steps to get to her hotel; I think that maybe she should have chosen a slightly flatter destination. It's now insanely crowded, and I hear a tour group leader constantly yelling "number one group this way", so that his charges don't all get lost. The whole town is a series of narrow alleyways. I‘ve got a map, but it's not a lot of use because none of ... read more

PANORAMAS: Fira and Oia on Santorini Red Beach on Santorini Skaros on Santorini Ruins on Delos Santorini and Mykonos are a feast for the visual senses. These two islands are way too popular, but shouldn't be missed for the sheer beauty they each possess. Both islands were moving into their high season and were overwhelmed with people and motorbikes. Buses were full, cruise ships were in the harbors, and streets were crowded. Many of our walks and hikes took us to some less crowded spots with amazing views and beaches. One of the major things we do when traveling is walk. Santorini is a great place for long hikes and beautiful coastal walks. Details of our routes will be included with the photos. A new discovery for us was the senic walk through Imerovigli and up ... read more

The first leg of our flight is a mind numbing fourteen hours to Doha. The Doha airport is massive, modern and very plush but it seems that someone forgot to order quite enough seats. Fortunately we only have two hours to kill. The airport has a large children's playground. The temptation to get on a swing and let off some excess energy after fourteen hours cramped in a tiny seat is almost overwhelming, but I'm sure if I did this I'd be breaking multiple laws. I've heard some not so good stories about what they do to law breakers here in the Middle East, so getting arrested before we've reached our first destination wouldn't seem to be a particularly great way to start things off. We crawl onto the plane for the next leg to Athens. ... read more

Today we took the bus from Fira side to other side of the Island to Perissa. The bus route is through a nice vineyard hill with very nice views of the whole island. Wish we knew and had planned that hike, but there was no time. The other side is less built up with buildings and has a beach. We decided to camp at Perissa camping http://perissa-camping.com/. We were prepared to rent a tent, but found out that this place does not rent tents at all. The only option was to either buy a new tent or stay in a cabin. Since we were set on camping, we ended up buying the tent. There were some people on the campsite, and some looked like they have been living there permanently. The campsite is right on the ... read more

Day 1: I landed in Santorini early in the morning flying in from Athens. Finally to the land of picture perfect whitewashed houses. For the first night we stayed at a canvas tent in one of the campsites. The campsite had a nice pool which was perfect for hot afternoon. After settling in to the campsite, it was off to the pool and taste some (touristy) Greek cuisine. Afternoon was reserved for a hike from Fira to Oia. It is a well travelled hiking path which is suppose to end at village of Oia at sunset. So that was the plan. We started off from the town of Fira. The hike starts next to a long line which was for a cable car that goes down to the beach. It was interesting walking past the line, ... read more

Santorini is a long way from Crete!! Travel arrangements were as follows:- (Organised via Spirdon Tourist Services with Candia) We got up at 5.30am, coach was supposed to pick us up at 6.30am but was 1/2hr late! We had to stop in Bali (Yes - Bali!!) to wait 10mins for some other people to be dropped off by minibus and then arrived in Heraklion about 8.30am. Picked up our tickets and boarded the FastCat4 catamaran. It left at 9.30am and we got to Santorini at about 11.30am. Half hour drive or so to Oia, where we avoided having lunch at the Guides recommended restaurant, and had an hour and a half to explore Oia. Lovely picturesque village clinging to the hillside with its iconic blue domes (earthquake-proof) and many churches ).Then ½ drive back to the ... read more

Flying out of Mykonos to Santorini with others who were stranded by the ferry schedules, only they were paying 4x the price of our tickets. We were grateful to land in much nicer weather, still windy but manageable. It was afternoon when we landed, staying in Firostefani our first stop was a walk to Fira. The views on the walk there were incredible- I took so many duplicate photos as none could do it justice. On Saturday morning, the ladies that ran our hotel knocked on our door with a little Easter basket containing 2 red dyed eggs, 2 candles, and 2 baked treats that they had baked themselves. We hadn't planned our trip to Santorini around the Easter weekend at all, it was just a happy coincidence. The girls explained to us that tonight we ... read more

SANTORINI THURSDAY AND FRIDAY; 30/31 October 2014 These past two days we haven't done very much. The weather is becoming much cooler each day, and the famed winter bugs are also beginning to arrive. No bites, they just seem to stick to you. Have walked into Fira each day, 15mins, full of jewellery shops, t shirts, and tourist tac. These shops are also closing, fewer open each day. Thursday there was 3 cruise ships, Friday 1 ship and none on leaving Saturday. The ships continue to visit until the end of November. Ate at the cafe above our hotel again, 4 nights on the trot. Good honest food. It was also difficult to find any other cafés open, and the one we considered was 10 minutes up the hill away in the dark with a chill ... read more
