The island of Rhodes is very different from the ones we passed and the one we visited, Santorini. Water is abundant here and new town of Rhodes is tree lined and shady while the Old City is not particularly. After a minor snafu, we hook up with our guide Anna who was born here and still lives here. There are nine of us, a very manageable group and we head by bus to the Acropolis. These areas of worship were built on the top of the highest hill near the town as in Athens and here the temple has been left in a state of ruin. Current archeology is concentrating on the pre-historic era and discovering sites where pottery, artifacts and remnants of daily living can be found. We stop for a photo op. Our ship ... read more

In order to provide some additional time in this fascinating land we back track to Ashdod, the port developed to relieve the congestion of Tel Aviv. This gives us an opportunity to see Caesarea, the Roman port city developed by Herod and named after Caesar to facilitate the Mediterranean trade. With an ongoing archaeology dig this is a National Park. Included in the excavations are The Theater, Promontory Palace, Herodian Amphitheater, Bathhouse Complex, ancient outdoor running water toilets, Fortified Medieval City, The Harbour, The Statues Square, the Hippodrome (circus) and the Roman Wall. Movies at the beginning and end of the tour recount the 3000 years of history involved. A windshield tour of our guide’s home city Tel Aviv reveals a vibrant cosmopolitan environment without the marked religiosity of Jerusalem. Our guide reports the expression: while ... read more

We arrived at the port in Piraeus and joined the line in order to board our boat. The line was going pretty quickly but was still pretty big due to the fact that most people had decided (like us) to get there early. Once we got through customs, we headed onto a bus which took us to our boat. It was pretty big but not as big as the P&O ones. We got to our room on Deck 3 and then headed out to explore the boat. We got our unlimited drinking passes which all good Australians should have from a guy called Darrick. We then reserved our table at the restaurant which was free which was in turn extremely excellent! After sorting everything out like that, we decided to put the cards to use and ... read more

Monday 27th June, 2011 We woke our usual time and went down to breakfast. Our plan for today was to visit Lindos. The buses ran from the other end of town and were quite often, so we had no particular bus in mind. We left the hotel at 1025 and strolled to the bus station. We paid for our bus tickets, €5 each single to Lindos, and after a short wait caught the 11 o'clock bus. The journey was pleasant for us as we haven't been out of the town area since our arrival so we had a chance to view the Rhodes countryside. Lindos is about half way down the island on the eastern coast. The bus was full and people were standing in the aisle by the time we arrived at Lindos. We saw ... read more

I'm not going to write day-by-day as I usually do. I'll just write about each island I visited. Some of my readers have messaged me to ask how life in Turkey is going. I'll write more about that later, but for now I'll just say that things are going fine, but slow, and I needed a few days away from the small town of Selcuk where I live. So, I decided to visit a few of the Dodecanese Islands. Right now it is considered low season, end of season, whatever you want to call it. I figured I shouldn't wait until November because there are even fewer ferries between islands in November than there are now, so on 19 October I caught a bus to Marmaris, Turkey where I would catch the ferry to Rhodos the ... read more

All good things come to an end and our time at the villa in Kalkan came to an end after 14 days of sunshine, pool, beaches, and great food. Some of the food the “dining out” variety and some of it the home-made gourmet type. The pool was always good, and the beaches picture perfect, especially Patara. Although all good things supposedly come to an end this ending was the beginning of new adventures. The adventures began before we had even actually left the villa. A bus / van for 7 persons and luggage had been ordered and a 7 - 9 passenger van showed up. They seemed to have forgotten the part about the luggage to go with the seven persons. Two bags in the back of the van and it was full. So the ... read more

After a long night of dancing, exhaustion dawned in me. I find it really hard to wake up early every morning especially since I am not a morning person to begin with. But this time was an exception, yes the alarm woke me up but I was very drowsy, no energy, eating breakfast with no appetite whatsoever, all I could really think of was to go back to that tiny cabin and crash. But I have to suck it up like a real trooper and start another amazing day in Greece, which island was unkown to me. I always thought I knew history, but as soon as I stepped down that cruise ladder and saw Rhodes for the very first time, I knew right away that I knew nothing about this place. I am a complete ... read more
