Background: Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001.

Hello all! I think I already have a day 3 but since this is about yesterday and I'm writing it on 3 Oct I'll call it how I see it! We were up at 3 am yesterday for our flight from Athens to Lesvos (aka Lesbos, Mytiline)Island, the 3rd largest Greek Island. Excellent 45 minute flight on Agean Airways, and tho Athens was amazing, we felt like we were finally in the Greece we had imagined. Our car was delivered to us from Cosmos car rental and away we went. It's been years since Gord drove a standard and I have [View Full Entry]

So we haven't blogged for a bit, but we've been here in Skala Eressos on Lesbos for about 10 days or so. This entry is kind of a compilation of things we have done on the island: We're staying on the lower floor of a house that belongs to Eleni's relatives. Because this floor isn't connected to the one above it, we essentially have our own house with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room. The house is maybe 150 yards from the actual beach. The entire town consists of about 20 bars/restaurants, a couple grocery stores, some [View Full Entry]

The Acropolis and Stuff Everyone met at the girls' room at 10:30 to begin the metro ride to the Acropolis. We purchased 24-hour metro tickets for 3 euro and hopped on the rails to the Acropolis stop. The line to get in to the Acropolis seemed pretty long, so we waited in it for a while before Aaron realized that the actual line to get in was about two people long and the other one was to buy tickets. Thanks to his quick detective work, we corrected an entire line. However, this line adventure paled in excitement to the Acropolis itself. [View Full Entry]

Athens The boys woke up at 10 for a 1:30 plane flight to Athens. Upon seeing it was a propeller plane, some people launched into the Tailspin theme song and, later, Indiana Jones. Those who were silent probably didn't join in because they were unfamiliar with the references. When they landed in Athens, they were greeted by Eleni and Sam. After saying hello, the girls related the story of their grueling 40-hour journey from Italy to Athens, including a 17-hour ferry ride involving Italians and fingers in sleeping ears. Everyone grabbed a cab and headed to the hotel, which was a [View Full Entry]

The Next Day We woke up in Santorini and grabbed a cab to the port to take a ferry to Mykonos. The ferry was scheduled to leave at 11:50, the hotel manager assured us we needed to be driving by 10:15. Because the port was 10 minutes away and they don't really bother with anything like security, we had about an hour to kill while we waited to board the ship. Since we were in Greece, where pretty much everywhere you turn is more history or more natural beauty, we thought we could pass the time by getting something to eat. [View Full Entry]

So we started a blog. Hello world! This is our 5th day in Greece, and we're gonna give a brief summary of everything that happened so far: It was awesome! (Everything with an exclamation point after it Aaron said). Everything with an exclamation point after it Aaron said! So here's what happened: Matt, Mark and Aaron took a flight from LAX to Heathrow. Some people got upgrades (Matt, Aaron). Some people didn't (Mark).
