After much research on where we might like to travel this year, we set our eyes toward Greece. Greece offers many reasons for which one should visit. We have tried to limit ourselves to the top six reasons. There is no particular order, but the following is a short list for which a traveler should choose Greece as their next destination. Our top reasons to vacation in Greece: 1. The Food. I like being fit but my favorite part of traveling is always trying new foods and pastries, and Greece is the best place to try new foods. Greece is great for meat eaters and vegans alike, as the local diets are abundant in fresh seafood, vegetables, grains, beans and legumes, and of course, meats (mostly lamb, goat, or pork). While you’re there, you can’t miss ... read more

Athens...I have seen this wondrous city on television all of my life, and I have only dreamed of coming here. Now my dream was finally a reality. I was anxious to get to my hostel, for I had booked one very near to the Parthenon, and you supposedly could see the Acropolis from there. I depart from the ferry, and find the metro that will take me near to my hostel. Once I depart the metro station, I make my way to the street level, and after a short time searching for the street, I find the hostel. After check in and going to my room, I find I have a top bunk. Not as excited about this, but luckily for me I was able to switch to a bottom bunk after only one day. I ... read more

5 August 2017 Our cruise ended this morning in Athens, we had enjoyed sailing on the Riveria and visiting all the fabulous ports. Glenn and Josie were flying in from London to join us for the next week and we were excited as had been looking forward to spending time with them. Our first two-night stay was at the Electra Palace Hotel which has a wonderful roof top pool with a view to the Acropolis, very inviting as the temperature was in the high thirties. Due to a delayed flight Glenn and Josie did not arrive until 11pm, it was not a problem to find somewhere to have a late supper as the Athenians seemed to eat out very late at night. We all enjoyed sitting at a traditional local tavern on the roof top terrace ... read more

July 13 Thursday Early wake up to get to Delphi early. The room was warm all night but with the fan I was comfortable. Others complained about their room being too warm too. Breakfast was a great buffet. They even had spinach pie again! Yummy. I tried a dessert called Bougatsa. It was flaky, cut into squares and filled with a warm vanilla flavored creme. It was soooo good. We boarded the bus and head off at 7:30 am. On they way to Delphi we passed mostly small villages of one room shacks with metal scrap for roofs and cotton farms. We made a rest stop in Thermopylae. I picked up a cream pastry thinking it would be like the one I had this morning. Unfortunately it was not anything like it. I also tried my ... read more

A 10-year-old who likes ruins - who would have thought that? Emma has two nieces, Jonna and Julia. When the girls turned five the birthday gift from Ake, Emma and Emma's sister Anna was a trip to Paris and Disneyland. We have written about those trips previously on Travelblog. To read about those trips, click here => for Jonna's trip and here => for Julia's trip. When Jonna turned 10 the three of us once again took Jonna for a trip abroad. That time we went to London and Brighton. Now Julia has turned 10 and it was her turn to go abroad with aunt×2 + uncle. Julia is less interested in shopping than her older sister and more interested... read more

We have begun our journey back to the states. We have a 4 hour layover in Munich before our direct flight back to Denver. We are both very excited to return home to all our friends and family and mostly Lola. We have missed her so very much however, I am a little worried she is going to be mad at us for being gone for so long! Our last night on the boat was very bitter sweet and reminded us of saying goodbye at summer camp. After arriving the next morning in Athens, we headed to the Acropolis museum with our new friends Pablo and Sophia. They had a few hours before their flight, so they could join us on our history experience for the morning. After that, we hiked up to the Parthenon which ... read more

Geo: 37.9792, 23.7166We awake to grey skies and rain in Piraeus. Not what we had expected. The captains announcement the evening before had said clear skies and 75 degrees. Anyway we showered and headed to the Oceanview cafe for breakfast. Reflection is docked at the far end of the passenger port. Piraeus seems to be dived into two ports. One for passenger vessels such as ferrys, jetcats, hydrofoils and cruise liners and then the cargo/tanker port in the distance. Whilst eating breakfast we spot a large plume of black smoke rise up in the distance in the vicinity of the cargo port. We see little fire boats race out and start dousing it with water. It is too far to make out exactly what 'it' is but the smoke soon subsides.Reflection is docked much further out ... read more

After our trip up the Acropolis we picked up our tickets for the hop on hop off bus. It took us up the graffiti covered streets around areas we had seen the night before . Our stop was going to be the Archaelogical museum. In big cities there are usually more than one museum. In London we have missed the V & A, the National History Museum. In Athens there is the National Art Gallery, the Museum of Cycladic Art, the Byzantine Museum, the Benaki to name but a few. There are only so many you can do in a short time. You get museumed out if there ever was such a word . We also had to put in a side trip to the Naval Museum at Flitmos Beach and had paid extra for the ... read more

We didn’t sleep well. The bed was comfortable but the noise rumbled on all night . We worried about Suzy. Would she be there when we got back? We are so used to sleeping in her it felt odd to be parted from her. Glenn was feeling ill too. All through the holiday he had had a tickling cough and the threat of something coming on. Today he started with a chesty cough. Our breakfast was thrown in. We ate various breads, croissants, cheese and ham, yoghurt and jams with copious cups of coffee. A full cooked breakfast , the so called American breakfast included fruit , eggs and bacon . The bread was fantastic slathered with thick butter washed down with wild cherry cordial. I find it odd people watching when they pick up their ... read more

It was one of those sad moments when we realised we had to leave another little piece of heaven. At 7.40 we paid up and set off in the direction of Delphi. Our plan was to get through before the morning traffic made it impossible to navigate through. Even at this early hour cars were stopping in the middle of the street to drop people off and the buses were making their way to the Sanctuary. However despite the double parking today it would be possible to get parking even for Suzy. As we travelled higher into the mountain the scenery changed. More limestone karst with fewer wild flowers. More shrubs with the lilacs in full bloom. We were heading for a little known monument on the side of the road at Lefktra (modern Thives) Sadly ... read more
