Day 21 - The Acropolis and Filopappou Hill (and points in between) Our plan was to get to the gates of the Acropolis early to avoid the worst of both the heat and the crowds. We also entered from the eastern gate, the one not used by all the tour companies. This took us past many of the sites lower on the hill such as the Theatre of Dionysus, several temples, caves that had been turned into churches, the work sites of various craftsmen, and a roman era theater that is still used today. We finally made it to the gates of the Acropolis and walked up the marble steps to the summit. We were able to see the Parthenon, the temple to Athena Nike, and many other smaller temples on the summit. The whole area ... read more

July 13, 2018. Episode 5: Greece is the word. When people think of the Greek islands, they often think of its crown jewel, Santorini. There has been a lot of lyrical waxing about the unique beauty of the place, and it’s justified. Santorini island is a crescent-shaped, partially submerged extinct volcanic caldera. It is a steep slice of land with a jumble of white-washed houses and hotels with pools strewn along its top, interspersed here and there with those classic blue-domed Greek orthodox churches. We flew in, and from the air it looks like a colossal slice of chocolate cake, tilted on its side and dripping with bright white icing. Certainly one of the most amazing places we have ever seen. Of course, Santorini is no secret. We were sharing its twisting cobblestone paths and breathtaking ... read more

Days 18 and 19 - Athens Bound One of the big side trips this summer is an extended weekend trip to Athens. We spent Thursday morning packing and closing up the flat for our late afternoon flight. While London has been hot, Athens is even hotter so we were able to pack light, taking only a couple of small carry-ons for the three of us. We got into the Athens airport after 10 PM, got a ride to the house were were staying at and checked in. It was midnight local time so we headed to bed, planning to sleep in a bit before exploring the city the next day. Friday was our first full day and we started with a greek breakfast and then a walking tour to see what we could find. Athens started ... read more

I have been very delinquent in keeping up with my blog posts, mostly because Sophie and I have been so busy being amazed by the sites and then further amazed by the Seabourne cruise ship we will be on for 17 days. Following my last post, we flew from Munich to Athens, spending two beautiful nights in a 5 star hotel and touring the ancient sites around Athens, all arranged by our cruise company. The Hotel Grande Bretagne was just amazing with luxury furnishing though out. Best of all, the roof top restaurant and bar had an unbelievable view of the Acropolis and the Parthenon. During the time, we toured the Acropolis, the Parthenon and the Acropolis Museum. To say such antiquities were amazing is an understatement. It is hard to beat the Parthenon. But on ... read more

Jack and I were very industriously made it to the ticket line of the Acropolis well before the 8 a.m. opening. Our walkabout concluded as the over-crowding of the ancient ruins with tour groups commenced. My impression of the Parthenon and other temples of the Acropolis is that I have retained so little ancient history, that a refresher lesson is highly in order. Travel has awakened my brain to language and culture unlike my job and graduate school. Today was a day of highs and lows. They high being the overlook of Athens from the Acropolis. They low being a slide down some wet marble steps leading to the Ancient Agora. Jack manage to lug me to a taxi and then back to the hotel for a once-over by a kind Greek doctor. Just a sprain. ... read more

We met Makis when we arrived in Greece. He was our driver to the Grand Bretagne Hotel. Makis is a young Greek man that is studying accounting in college. We bonded. During our lively conversation in the knot of Athenian gridlock, we deduced that Makis’s father owned the car service and Makis drives in order to support his studies. We schemed a plan for Makis to drive us to his favorite spot in Greece the next evening. He dropped us at the hotel and with a charming grin and said, “see you tomorrow”. With our bags unloaded in the splendor of our room, we headed by yellow tax (not a plush as the black Mercedes of Makis) to the Acropolis Museum. Inside the museum, is a collection of artifacts excavated from the site of the Parthenon ... read more

Boy, did I sleep last night. Jet lag is no joke! I decided to make this a relatively easy day for myself. This morning I started with a walk to the Acropolis. It was only 9:30AM but it was scorching hot out. The throngs of other tourists, many on group tours, seemed to suck up all the breeze right out of the air. Once past the ticket booth, the first site you come across is the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a stone theater completed in 161 AD. It was used as a venue for music concerts for as many as 5000 people. Think of our most cherished outdoor venues around the US, this Is the design original that provides for the amazing acoustics. The next ruin is Erechtheion, a Greek temple dedicated to both Athena and ... read more

Kalimera from Athens! For those that don’t know, my friend Angela invited me once again on a TAG-ALONG. Her annual conference is here this week and while she spends her days working out of an office at the Athens Hilton, I get to stay with her in her beautiful hotel room with Acropolis views, eat and drink in the Executive Lounge as much as I’d like, and do all the touristy things I can fit into 5 days. I know, I know! I’m NOT kidding you. Last year’s TAG-ALONG was Rome and I had a blast so I know I’m in for a treat. We arrived in Athens about 9:15AM and were met by the hotel driver, Dimitri. Transporter 2.0! We looked raggedy after the 9 1/2 hour flight but he was a sight for older, ... read more

I knew that this was going to be one of the highlights of my traveling days. I told my self a couple of years ago that after I've visited Europe I'll be content and just stay home and save my money to buy useful things that grown men should be accumulating. Like properties, cars, and stocks. But I also said that years ago about the States and still I kept on travelling. So we'll see! I was travelling alone as usual. Europe is very expensive for most Filipinos who rely on a working man's salary like me. And that's most of the people that I know so I already knew I was gonna have to do this alone so I didn't mind. Even I wasn't sure if I could afford it but I just went anyway. ... read more
