Our second night aboard the Viking Magni was very comfortable. Our destination on the next day was Cologne. We had visited here before and had not booked any tours. Most of the other passengers alighted at Lons to do a walking tour of Cologne but we stayed on board. We happily read our books in the Lounge, watching the riverbanks slide by. By 12 most of the passengers had returned in time for lunch as we tied up just opposite the famous Cologne Cathedral. The weather was overcast and cool. We wondered where the hot summer had dissipated to, but we enjoyed our lunch on board. About 2-30 we decided to alight and see a little of the city. We were berthed near the huge Hollenzollern Bridge, on the opposite side of the river to the ... read more

Today was an easy morning, as we were able to sleep in a little later, grab a quick breakfast in the restaurant as the boat was pulling into the dock at Koblenz. From When we got off the ship, we could see the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and cable cars above us, but we weren’t visiting the fortress, we boarded the bus for a short ride to Marksburg Castle. Originally built in the 12th century, and updated through the 15thcentury, it is one of the only castles on the Rhine that has never been destroyed or fallen into disrepair. It passed through various hands through the centuries until it was donated to the German Castles Association in the 1900’s and became the head office of the association. The head of the German Castles Association actually lives in the ... read more

"Whatever comes , let it come, what stays let stay and what goes let go" Papaji This holiday seems to be one of taken whatever comes into our stride. It has never quite turned out to be what we planned but the unplanned seems to be coming together. This part of Germany has been interesting to say the least. Not what we expected and the weather is poor. Hat , coats and gloves weather. But at least there is something to see and write home about. Many years ago someone sent me a card from Ostende, one from the Swiss mountains and told me about Koblenz. He loved it and raved about it for years after. I never quite worked out why. It had never been on the radar. I knew it was the place where ... read more

July 23rd Koblenz and up the lazy river to Rudesheim........... I must say I love waking up on these mornings and wondering where we are. The first thing I like to do is look out the window to get a precursory view of our upcoming adventure for the day. Today we woke in Koblenz, another tiny village along the Rhine River. The six of us boarded the bus together and headed out to St. Mark's Castle. The village was beautiful with many quaint hotels made of white plaster and dark wood beams. Petunias and geraniums of every color spilled from the windows and balconies. I couldn't help wondering as we bused pass them who would come here for longer than a day. We're here because a two hour guided tour of the castle is on Viking's ... read more

Shortly after breakfast, the ship docks at Rüdesheim. By 9 am we are on board a mini motorized "train" that drops us off at the town's signature attraction: Siegfried's Music Cabinet. This museum is devoted to mechanical musical instruments and it's one of the largest such collections in the world. The collection and the museum resulted from the singular vision and passion of one Siegfried Wendel, who travelled the world collecting self-playing instruments and painstakingly restored them to working order. Our guide takes us through dozens of rooms, each filled with a variety of pianos, "orchestrions" and other contraptions that play by themselves. Most are wind-up instruments. Many of them use some type of perforated paper rolls to dictate the notes to play. Most are ornately carved and some feature mechanical figures that move in time ... read more

The city of Koblenz sits at the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle rivers. Such a strategic location has meant that the city has changed hands several times between the Germans and the French. So perhaps not surprisingly, the accepted symbol of the city is the "Schangelbrunnen", a boy with a French father and a German mother (perhaps unmarried). Schangel is a corruption of the French name Jean or John, which the Germans found difficult to pronounce. The Schangelbrunnen is a naughty boy, a rascal, who is memorialized in a stautue of a boy who spits erratically at passing people. Schangelbrunnen also appears throughout the city on the sewage caps. Originally the name was an insult but now it just means a person from Koblenz. Women are given quite unusual recognition in the Catholic church ... read more

Dafür ... read more

Docked at a relatively big city, so the Internet connection should be good. We both slept in an hour later than usual. Roger until almost 6:00am and me a little before 7:00. It was overcast and brisk out on deck. At 8:30am we were again underway. The morning included a river tour and stories about the many castles along our way. The city of Koblenz is at the confluence of the Rhine and Mosel Rivers. As you approach from the south the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is above you and on the right. When we rounded the peninsula, to turn the boat around for docking, the very impressive statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I comes into view. It was built as a tribute to his unifying Germany in the late 1800s, destroyed by the Allies in 1945 and rebuilt ... read more
