Yo whaddap homedoggs. Dont expect anything whacked out like what stacie has in her travel blog. Germany is not freakishly culture shocking. Right now Im living in Duisberg, about 10 minutes away from Düsseldorf, where the Goethe Institut is, where Im taking classes. Where Stacie sees all US's successes in her blog, I see some of its failures and potential. I dont have a whole lot of time because I want to catch the 12:15 Sbahn (one thing I love about Germany), but I just wanted to be able to start my blog too... even if it wont be as wildly exciting. But its interesting for me to have read Steaks blog now, instead of when I was still in the US. Coming here has put my life goal in another perspective-- most shockingly coming back ... read more

Hallo. This will be the last entry written from this side of the pond, as I travel tomorrow. I'll probably write another after I get back to Van, so after that I'll try to get the pictures up for this entry and that final "I'm back" one (probably after the Cambie outing at 9pm on the 17th, if anyone cares to join!). Travel update From Denmark, I made it to Berlin traveling on a train that itself boarded a ferry. I stayed at Dr.NoJoke's once again and had a truly unique time for the third place match as well as the final (see below). Monday I traveled to meet Ute in Minden which is where I type now. After a lovely several days here, I'm on my last one until I fly; tomorrow I take a ... read more

While staying in the Netherlands and keeping up with what I consider greater than the Olympics -- the World Cup -- I decided it'd be fun to see if I can catch the next game in Germany. The next match was going to be held in Dortmund on the 4th of July; better yet the teams were Germany vs. Italy, so I knew the city was going to go nuts regardles of the outcome. The ride from Hoopsdorf, Netherlands to Dortmund was fantastic, and I was surprised to find out that there is literally no border patrol, passport checks, or any of that nonsense along the Netherlands-Germany border (similar to the Belgium-Netherlands border). The trip was very scenic until I hit Germany, and then I just focusd on appreciating the sheer speed... read more

After a short but relaxing visit to see friends and their toddler in the wine growing region south of Frankfurt, it was time to visit some parts of Germany which Luke knew but which were new to me. For obvious, war related reasons, there aren't many historical sites left in Koeln, apart from the cathedral. However, it's impressive enough to make up for it, with vast towering spires and immense stained glass windows. Inside there is an incredible feeling of space, despite the inevitably high number of tourists there at any given moment. The day we arrived was the day of the Germany v Italy semi-final and from lunchtime onwards the town was gearing up for it, becoming increasingly schwarz, rot, gold as the day went on. We sat by the river, feeling slightly guilty for ... read more

Day 16, 16th June. Around Düsseldorf The guys, and Leslie, have all emulated their ‘Great Leader’ and bought Brookes saddles*. Today was spent lurking around town. At Kaufhaus we managed to use the internet and I read the many letters from Kathryn, including naughty ones! Later on we went to Mark and Urs’s place to pick up our bikes we left last night then went back to the tents. I cooked dinner and Mark arrived later with Rita, his new girlfriend! Later on I called Kathryn collect, and spoke to her an hour about life and love, many times before have I imagined a future, but this time it seems that fate has stepped in and set this future in stone. I rode back to the campsite lit by fireflies. *Brookes saddles - the best leather ... read more

Day 14, 14th June. Tessenderlo - Leopoldsburg - Roermond (HOLLAND) - Elmpterwald (GERMANY) Woke up early, had breakfast and set off the same time as yesterday. There was blue sky and good cycle lanes ahead of us. After passing Leopoldsburg we went through a huge military area of Belgium before getting to Bree where we used up all our Belgian francs at Aldi and ate in the town square. My appetite was back with a vengeance! After then it was a straight ride to the Dutch border and coffee shops. We just cycled in, past an empty border station and along confusing cycle ways to Roermond where I managed to post my Barbie card off to Kathryn. Afterwards, Scott, Rory and I found an internet coffee shop which sold Colombian ‘specials’. We had one and checked ... read more

Leaving Luton, I was once again suspected of being a hooligan. Once through Luton security check, I was corralled by a police office into a line of brutish-looking blokes. I tried to pull out my most American of accents to seem too gullible and epicene to be a hooligan. Didn't work. We waited while a team of three officers equipped with laptops checked our background information. I had heard that anyone with a criminal record would not be allowed to travel to Germany. I had no fear that I would be granted passage. It was just an annoying formality that was actually necessary. Within a few minutes, the check was complete and I made it to the gate. The flight proceeded as normal as expected. Flying with Easyjet, you wonder how the flight attendants tolerate ... read more

US v. Czech Republic in Gelsenkirchen My journey from Salzburg to Cologne, where I was staying, and then on to Gelsenkirchen was longest over-land travel of my trip to that point. I left at around 7am, and arrived in Cologne just after 2pm. Since the US vs. Czech Republic game was that night at 9pm and it was the only game for which I had tickets, I wanted to be sure that I was there early. Luckily I ran into my friends, Josh, Jer and John in the train station. They were already leaving for the game. Wondering why they were leaving six hours before gametime, I was surprised to discover that the game actually started at 6pm! Considering that they were holding my tickets and planning to meet me outside the gate of the stadium, ... read more

Cologne On a recommendation of a friend that lived in Germany (thanks Baker), we decided to stay in Cologne between games. As soon as you walk out of the Hauptbahnhof, or main train station, you run smack into the magnificent Dom, the oldest Gothic cathedral in Germany. Just walking around the Altstadt, or old town, which is filled with restaurants, bars and beer halls, confirmed that Cologne was the right choice. In general, I have to say the Germany has been a great host for the World Cup. One of the things that they have done extremely well is to create FanFests, or large public viewing areas, in each of the cities that hosted Cup matches. This set up is great for fans who were not able to get tickets but want to watch with a ... read more
