It was a glorious Sunday morning, our first day in Berlin, and we decided to start our explorations by checking out the Tiergarten, the large park at the centre of the city. The trains were surprisingly full so we were standing in a crush of people barely managing to be inside the tram doors, and then we heard what was happening. The far right party, the AFD, had announced a demonstration outside the Brandenburg Gate. In response, a wide range of groups had anounced many counter demonstrations across the city for the same time, and the people on our tram were headed for the "Dance Against Hate" rally to be held close to the AFD rally, with very loud techno music to drown them out.... read more

Day 11 We must head to the airport for our flight to Moscow at 3, which means we only have time for 2 museums. I picked the Kunstgewerbemuseum Museum of Decorative Arts, and Jack picked the Museum of Photography that also houses the Helmet Newton foundation. At the Kunstgewerbemuseum once again, the architecture was the most exciting part of the visit. In fact many of the buildings in Potsdam Square and the Kulturforum were innovative and exciting. The Decorative Arts Museum had some gorgeous carved furniture from the 15th Century. Unfortunately, I got terribly hungry to we headed out to our next stop via Ben-Gurion Strasse. It was strange to see that a street was named after Ben Gurion. I’m reading When they come for us we’ll be gone which is a history of the freeing ... read more

This is our first day of something other than 70 degree and sunny weather. With the proper clothes it’s not so bad. Our Cold War Tour started at 10. I thought it was a 2-hour tour, but it turned out to be a 4-hour tour. I had already booked a 3-hour tour starting at 1 with John from the Topography of Terror tour so I pushed it back. The Cold War Tour started with a visit to one of the last remaining sections of the wall and the Palace of Tears at the train station at which East Berliners caught the train back to the East after a visit to the West. We went down to the subway stops that were taken out of use while the wall was up. The East Germans always had 3 ... read more

Sometimes, I need to pay more attention. The arrival time was 8:30 not 9. So much for breakfast. I was there on time, but it involved some jogging. The Reichstag is amazing building mixing historic and modern styles. It was gutted in a fire in 1933 and not fully restored until 1991 when the Berlin Wall came down. The fire was pinned on the Communist Party was the excuse that enabled Hitler to assume unlimited power. Members of the Reichstag that objected, ultimately ended up dying in prison or a concentration camp. History repeats itself when you don’t learn from what happens. One the things that brought Hitler to power is the conservative party thought it could control him if they included him in their coalition. Trump is not Hitler, by the story of the Republican ... read more

We started the day with a tour of the Jewish Museum. For those of you who know me, you know I wouldn’t visit Berlin without visiting this museum. It was not at all what I expected. I expected exhibits that showed what happened to the Jews, instead I found a building that evocated the feelings of what happened to the Jews. Walking through the building the architecture made you feel the unsettled reality of Jews who were fortunate enough to emigrate, the emptiness of the Jews who were murdered and the uncertain reality of the future of Jews who survived. There was virtually no signage or displays that either explained or showed what happened, rather the building itself enabled you to feel what had happened. For example, there was a small outside area with 49 tall ... read more

We started our day with a tour about the history of the Nazis led by a young British man, John, who is doing a post-doc here in mid-20thcentury German history with a focus on the history of the Jews in Germany at that time. As anyone who has been in Berlin knows, much of the city was destroyed so many historical sites don’t exist. When you visit the site of Hitler’s bunker, you visit a parking lot. The government does not want to memorialize Hitler, so the only there is only a small plaque noting the spot. We visited the Reichstag where John explained the political history leading up to Hitler seizing power. He described that the Conservatives had invited Hitler’s party into the government thinking they could control them. We all know how well that ... read more

It’s dificult to pigeon-hole Berlin, as it is a diverse mix of old and new, is very multicultural and heavily steeped in history. We bought daily transport passes and changed from buses to trams to trains very regularly. The main points of interest are quite spread out and there doesn’t seem to be the congestion that we experienced in Budapest. Obviously, due to its part in WW2 and the destruction of most of Berlin in 1945, the buildings are relatively recent and many are reproductions of what stood there before. It makes for an interesting mix of socialist modernist styles, Soviet architecture in the East and newer buildings highlighting modern Germany and its place in the modern world. You can’t visit Berlin without commenting on its role in WW2 and the Holocaust but I think it ... read more

I wake up this morning to birds. Early light and twitter stream through the small window that overlooks a cared for garden surrounded by walls of vines waiting for the warm cover of spring. The largest tree towers over our 3rd floor room and small birds busily swap branches, then swap again, as a cold breeze drifts into our room. It’s 6.30am. I am also an early bird. Last night we visited the Brandenburg Gate, the Deutscher Bundestag, the Germany’s Parliament, and followed the path of the Berlin Wall which has the original site outlined by a double row of cobbled pavers faithfully tracing the route, often disappearing into the wall of a building only to reappear further along the way. It’s always been foremost in my mind that the places we visit have a deeper ... read more
