Glyn strode out into the frosty, misty morning purposefully as though he knew where he was going. I followed like I believed it. We had to purposefully walk a bit further after crossing the wrong bit of road and missing the tram stop. However, we managed to catch the correct tram and travelled past the places we’d walked along last night. We’ve still not sussed where we’re meant to scan or present our travel tickets. Technically we’ve not paid for any of our journeys yet, despite having paid for 4-day travel cards. But no one else appears to be scanning tickets either. We caught an old fashioned looking underground type train. It was meant to be one stop and would have been, had we gone the right way! Announcements on the train said that wearing a ... read more

Arriving at BER we were stuck at the back of a massive queue with all the other Brits. I’d left a scarf on the plane and returning to retrieve it meant we were one of the last to join the queue too. Salt was rubbed into the Brexshit wounds when a member of staff shouted, “anyone with Resident passes or EU citizens?” as they could go to the fast automated EU line, but we were stuck with the rest of the world in the painfully slow, non automated dickhead queue. We gazed longingly at the empty auto passport scanners with the info screens rotating videos on how to use them, that meant you didn’t have to talk to officials. There were only three passport desks open as I guess they’re set up for EU citizens in ... read more

Hotellin aamupala. Metrolla Warschauer Strasselle. Aluksi satoi hiukan. Kivoja katuja. Ratikalla jatkoin Prezlauer Bergiin. Vissytauko.

Pie... read more

Ostin 24 tunnin lipun joukkoliikenteeseen. Pääsin liikkeelle klo 12.30. Kävin ensin katsomassa Weddingissä taloa, josta olin varannut Airbnb-majoituksen, mutta jonka sitten myöhemmin peruin. Talo oli korkea opiskelija-asuntola, joten siellä olisi voinut tuntea olonsa oudoksi. Jatkoin S-junalla Prenzlauer Bergiin. Siellä pätkä ratikalla ja kanaleipä. Kävelykierros vei minut vesitornille. Lopuksi otin pienen oluen. Päätin muutenkin siirtyä suurista juomista pieniin juomiin. Palasin hotellille maan pintaa pitkin.... read more

Up early on Sunday morning taxi to Main Station Prague and boarded our train at around 8.15 for a 8.29a.m. departure, all went well until about an hour and a half into our journey, at a small town called Decin, still in the Czech Republic, an announcement came over to get off the train as this train could not go any further because of breakdown. Staff on train knew little except there was a problem, "no one can take this train, or else someone could die", Oh OK! Luckily we had ran into a relieving Manager from our apartments Uniting Age Well the day before at the Palace in Prague and they were also on this train going to Berlin, he spoke German and the station person could speak a little German too, nothing was forthcoming ... read more

TUE, 30 AUG 2022 – Day 18: Dresden - Berlin - Our first destination today is a lunch stop in the German city of Dresden. Virtually rebuilt from the ground up after bombing attacks in WW2 destroyed the city centre, Dresden is immaculate and stylish. Try some of the local German food - such as Bratwurst, and have a wander around the beautifully paved streets. We’ll then carry on to the capital of Germany, Berlin. Your tour leader will introduce you to the city on a driving orientation tour - stopping off to see such poignant locations as the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and Checkpoint Charlie. Overnight – Hotel Good Morning + Berlin City East... read more

Day seventeen. Today was an up and out kind of day. We are our very Austrian breakfast in our very Austrian hotel (and had to wake up a very teenaged Seth who's response was to pull the cover over his head when we said we had to go for breakfast!) The journey was surprisingly good given that it took eight hours. The stops we made were at the best ever services with a fly past of five helicopters just for us (maybe) and a couple of others and by five we'd made it to Leipzig to meet our friends for tea. This hotel felt a tad eastern block but was comfy and the room had the biggest shower known to man. An actual room size shower (Ash danced in it) that we could have got teen ... read more

(1 day until departure) I am in the final stages of preparing for a 12-months sabbatical. Over the last few weeks and months, I have dealt with wide range of issues – from booking my first few flights, finding a language school to brush up my Spanish, getting some vaccinations, purchasing travel insurance, subletting my flat, handing over my work to my colleagues, to saying goodbye to family and friends. The last time I did a bigger trip in 2008, there were virtually no processes in place at my company for a longer leave of absence. In the end, I had to quit my job to go travelling. This time around, things are very different. Over the years, many big companies in Germany haven given worker-retention and motivation some serious thought. The result is, that I ... read more

... read more
