Curry 36
The BEST fast food in town. We arrived at Merringdam U-Bahn Station mid morning it was cold, real cold, and did our best follow the directions to our hostel. Unfortunately I had forgotten to write to down the address of the place, all we had were directions that looked like they were written in German and put through a translation program on the Internet, not good. Half an hour to forty-five minutes later we arrived.
The place looked clean, but a bit bland. We were staying in a 6 bed dorm, our room mates were a Canadian couple and a strange Italian guy, Marco, who was in Berlin for none other then juggling lessons. Or to see some sort of juggling master. No joke his bag was full of juggling pins, juggling balls and other weird juggling
things.
Later that night we headed out for dinner and came across a place that was pouring out onto the street. It was packed. The awning had the sign 'Curry 36' on it, with a big sausage. Looked interesting. We made our way over there and it was basically a big sausage sizzle. Why they don't have one of these in Manly I don't know, it would make
Flame Thrower
Crazy guy in an awesome pub. a killing. There were a number of different choices but the most popular seemed to be 2 sausages with chips and a liberal amount of both tomato sauce and mayo. It was cheap and delicious, we had hit the jackpot, right round the corner of our hostel.
The next day Matt and Katie, the Canadian couple, expressed interest in an organised pub crawl. We decided to join them. It was quiet strange, we had to meet on a random corner in Berlin. The organisers were wearing big green Heineken Hats (some of you will know the ones). It cost us about €15 each which included 'free shots in-between pubs' and free beer for the first hour, sounded worth it. The first pub was something out of an 80's Hollywood Film. As you walked through the front door it seemed quite normal, but out the back it was a house party. The ground was a mixture of sand and dirt, the seating was a mixture of school benches, chairs, and couches. The drinks were served out of a caravan like at a Rugby match. After about ten minutes our attention was drawn to a bathtub full of some sort of
fuel in the middle of the beer garden, if you can call it a beer garden. A guy dressed in a Fireman's outfit, holding some sort of gun-like weapon set alight the bathtub, creating a bit of warmth for the onlooking crowd. He then started spinning around like a madman and we soon realised that the weapon was a flame thrower. A pyrotechnics show in the middle of a pub? What is this? The show went on for about half an hour and had the whole place captivated. Once it was all over it was time to change pubs.
The organizers made good on the free shots en route to the next pub. It was some sort of schnapps, and quite easy to get more than your fair share. The second pub was horrible. The line took about fifteen minutes and there was literally no where to go. We pushed and squeezed our way through the sweaty crowd, made it to the bathrooms at the back, then turned around and went back out. The organizers soon got the gist and we moved on. More shots and another pub. This time we stopped under a bridge near a park and
there we were, a hundred of us holding up our shot glasses for dear life. Quite a site for anyone on a nice night walk through the park.
The next pub was next to the bridge. There was no room inside so the lot of us ended up drinking on the grass in the park. After a couple of drinks it was time to move on. We had walked ahead of Katie and Matt with the main bulk of the group. We slowed our pace to wait for them but couldn't see them. We stopped and waited and found them coming towards us looking distressed. Katie had lost her purse which had her wallet, passport, credit cards etc etc etc all inside. We offered to go back and look with them, but they had been looking for ten minutes already and couldn't find it. She had left it on the grass where we were sitting, someone must have picked it up and walked off. We spent the next half hour trying to call her bank and thinking of what to do. We had effectively lost the group. Katie and Matt decided to call it a night and headed back
to the room. Kell and I did our best to find the group but gave up and joined them not long after. It was a real shame because we were all having such a great night.
The next day didn't see much action except wandering our neighbourhood and visiting Curry 36. If you go to Berlin, find Curry 36, it's so so so good!
Anyway we eventually got our act together and made it into town the next day, We saw most of the sites, Brandenburg Gate, Holocaust Memorial, Sony Centre (what a site, lol), some old Medieval Bridge, the Wall. That was enough.
We did make it back to the Sony Centre the next day to catch The Dark Night, the new Batman movie. It was nice to sit in a cinema again. There was one downside though. They didn't turn on the lights till
after the credits, how annoying. Anyway it was a great movie!
Our time in Berlin was coming to a close, so we hit Curry 36 and planned our move to Dresden.
