STILL in Bavaria We are enjoying Germany so much we just can't seem to leave! After staying three nights in the campingplatz in Dinkelsbuhl, seeing yet more walled medieval towns, including Rothenburg ob der Tauber which was pretty amazing. While we were there, we managed, by loitering on the town hall steps while they screened of the town square, to watch a Bavarian folk dancing group do their thing on Easter Sunday. Needless to say we didn't have to pay the euros you were supposed to to get in! The procession into the square, along with the dancers, the bavarian band and a few dignitaries, also included a large sheep draped in greenery. We didn't manage to stay around long enough to see what the significance of that was! Easter is a pretty big celebration and ... read more
Hello, We are in a village in Southern Germany near Lake Constance right now, which is on the Swiss/German/Austrian border. We went to Oktoberfest last night, so pardon any spelling or grammatical mistakes. After Austria we travelled by train up to a town in Germany called Offenburg. We had not notified anybody that we were going to be in the area, and we arrived somewhat late and were unable to contact anybody by telephone, so we were left with two choices: we could sleep in the station, where the weather is about 40 F, or we could go to the hotel. Jason went to the hotel and explained to the receptionist that we had no money and were stranded, and asked here where the cheapest place in the town was. She told us that nowhere was ... read more
The first brochure I picked up at the tourist office said ~"The Happy End of Germany!" and oh my, what a happy place it is! i think i took over 100 pictures in the two short days I was here! This was on a recommendation of Jess, her sister lives near here and they like to vacation in Lindau, so i thought, why not!?! I was absolutely enamored the minute the train pulled into town. Lindau is an island on the Bodensee (lake constance) which borders austria, switzerland, and germany. The train passed over an isthmus to get to the island and I immediately started grinning! PARADISE!! I arrived in the middle of a conference on a weekend, so there were no rooms available except the 5 star hotel on the lake on the edge of ... read more
Hey everybody! I’m sorry I haven’t written since I think last Saturday (todays wed I believe). That day Mom & I drove to Munich from Rothenberg (4-5 hours drive) and in between we stopped by the city of Ulm which was where the tallest steeple as well as the birthplace of Albert Einstein….it was a cool city and we found this candy shop that had these cute little candy figurines of animals and little things. Back on the 10:02 boat again today, but this time going for a total of 2.5 hours (passing yesterday's ports) to the island of Lindau. This is as far south as one can go in Germany so I guess I'll now have been to the 4 corners. For some strange reason, I've wanted to go to Lindau for about 35 years, so it was finally happening. This very old island city did not disappoint me with its seaside promenade (even better than Meersburg), narrow lanes, restored 14th and 15th century buildings, market squares and greenery all over the place. It could have been a bit sunnier, but it was fine. Of course the boat ride back was again 2.5 hours so it was 6:30 PM by the time the boat docked in Meersburg. Now I'm thinking ... read more
