Kiwis in a Campervan

Dean and Shelley are heading away from New Zealand in March 2011. After months of planning and many, many changes to the itinerary, the airfares have been booked and paid for and deposits and dates locked in for the 2 campervans; A Spaceship for the UK and Europe and a Lost Camper for the USA and Canada. The motorbike legs of the initial plans have now been relegated to some day trips around Las Vegas :-(. Still, that gives us a good excuse to plan another trip in 2012!!!

I write this final blog, sitting in an Airport Hotel, a few hours out from catching the shuttle to the airport and sitting around for a few hours more before we catch the flight home. During the last few days, we have traveled from San Francisco, alternating between highway 1 and the 101, down to Los Angeles. We stayed at Santa Cruz, THE most expensive campground we stayed at during the whole time we have been away, and Pismo Beach, before making the run to Los Angeles and staying for 2 nights out at Pomona. The road down the coast is definitly worth the windy drive, with amazing switchbacks, coastal views, Seal colonies and vistas as you curve high around steep cliffs and wind down to small bays and longer beaches. Switching back to the 101 ... read more

We had booked a tour of the city and met the bus at 8.45am, ready for the 9am drive into San Francisco. This was a bit of a shock to the system as it has been quite some time since we have had to be anywhere by a certain time, apart from flights! I think we are going to need some training to get into the 'getting up and getting to work on time' regime that will be upon us all too soon! For the moment though, we enjoyed riding into town, without having to drive or navigate our way around. Once again, it was a foggy start to the day, but luckily, this was starting to lift and had cleared the Golden Gate Bridge as we drove across it. Some nice photo opportunities were had ... read more

After cruising down the Oregon coast for the last few days, we have crossed the state line into California. This part of the region is home to the Redwood forests and we have spent a few leisurely days traveling in the area, pausing now and then to explore the different parts of the Redwood National Park and the attractions that lie within. Of course, there are trees, BIG trees. After spending the night at Crescent city, we headed for an attraction called,'The Trees of Mystery', No mystery there really, once you know a few facts about Redwood Trees and they way they grow and how they support each other in that growth. Trees like the 'fallen Giant', a massive tree that fell 300 years ago, yet is still alive in that it supports the growth of ... read more

For the last few days we have been heading South, down Highway 101 on the Oregon Coast. After a night in Astoria, close to the mouth of the Columbia river, we have had stops in Lincoln City and North Bend, which is next to the Oregon dunes. The views as you drive along the coast are stunning. There are miles and miles of long golden sand beaches, interspersed with rocky headlands and small bays and inlets surrounded by more rock. The forest grows almost to the edge of the Ocean so you are presented with thick greenery on one side and the blues, greens, and white of the water and the surf on the other. At the Northern end we followed the trails of Lewis and Clark, the first European men to map this part of ... read more

Our visit to Seattle luckily coincided with 2 of the average 65 days a year that are sunny. Add to that the fact that it was weekend and you have a recipe for a very busy time in town! Coming in from the North, after a long wait to get through the border between the USA and Canada, the view over Puget Sound with the space needle rising in the centre of the city, was pretty special. We got one of the last spots in the camping ground and the next day headed by train into the city, about a 20 minute ride,(which took 30 because of track maintenance and because service had been cut to every 15 minutes) Still a pretty good service if you ask me. We got off at the Chinatown stop and ... read more

Well it appears that i have to write something because the chief writer has said so, we are definitely on the homeward trek now as we head down the west coast of the USA so I guess its about time I did something other than sit around waiting for food and beverages to be brought to me.. After a misty ferry ride over from Horseshoe Bay and spending a few days couped up in the van getting used to the rain again, we finally ventured out into the Goldstream Provincial Park on Vancouver Island for some much needed walking (due to sitting around waiting for food and beverages I expect), wonderful sights and sounds all around and very much like home. Although not the time of the year for the salmon to do their thing and ... read more

Mother nature appears to have decided that our last month on the road in both Europe and North America will be rainy. The rain started with a few showers in Banff, steady rain in Whistler and intermittent rain, drizzle, mist and cloud as we made our way down the Sea to Sky Highway from Whistler, through a night in Squamish and down to Horseshoe bay. From there we caught the Ferry to Vancouver Island and have spent two rainy nights in Nanaimo. Consequently, I would have taken more photos, but how many photos of cloud and fog can you have? The road through to Whistler from Lake Louise passed through Marble Canyon. Very scenic and a bit of change from the mountains and forests. We also had our only up close encounter with a bear. Unfortunately ... read more

Well, we have crossed yet another border into Canada. We stayed our last night in Montana at West Glacier and headed north to make the border crossing at the Port of Roosville. You sort of expect there to be a bit more of a town or selection of buildings around a border crossing but there was very little bar the booths where you show your passport and answer questions and then get waved on through. For the next 80km's there was nothing but hills and forests and rivers with a few homesteads and VERY small towns in between, in fact, I am being generous in calling them 'towns'. They may once have been but they now only show there past in the few empty buildings left standing. We did finally feel like we had found civilisation ... read more

Big Sky, Big Mountains. That sums up Montana. Its amazing that the places where you spend the most time are sometimes the places that you expected to just pass through. It happened for us in Germany and now appears to be happening here in Montana. After leaving Yellowstone we decided to observe Independence Day in Missoula. As it is a holiday, we spent the day relaxing in the sun/shade (that was me), reading a book cover to cover (that was me too) and generally chilling out. For Dean, it also meant relaxing ( but in full sun) and reading a book (he got through half a book), and turning pink in the process. Admittedly it was a longer book than mine but i have already read it! I expected more of a to do around the ... read more

We have spent the last three days driving through and around the south and north loops of Yellowstone National Park. We entered the park through the east entrance, leaving Cody and driving towards the West entrance which is in Montana. The first thing that we encountered was snow! Lots of snow! It seemed surprising, as we have had such hot sunny days, we expected it all to have melted, but at the high elevations within much of the park, it seems to stick around. Our agenda was to see if we could spot the wildlife foriegn to us back home in NZ, namely Bison/Buffalo, Bears...either Black or Grizzly, Elk...both Does and Stags, Moose and Wolves. The latter two is getting very hopeful as there are only about 200 moose in the whole park, and its a ... read more
