Hello Reader. My dogs are barkin’. I was upstairs by eight forty-five. Steffie was sitting at the breakfast table. I said good morning and realized that there was a lack of barking. Steffie’s mom had taken the dog to work with her. I get to live another day! She had decided that it was too foggy for the hike. Steffie and I left after breakfast (and a nap…?) for Hochgrat Mountain. The weather was great, Steffie’s mom would have loved it. We drove for an hour before reaching the base. One thousand eight hundred and eighty four meters, which works out to about thirty miles, above sea level. There was a ski lift (but no snow right now) to the top. The hike was to take two and a half hours. Within minutes of beginning, I ... read more

Hello Reader. Yesterday I woke up to a dog jumping around on my bed. Let me tell you, next to earthquakes, I think the most terrifying thing to wake up to is a dog who hates you jumping on your bed while you’re sleeping. Steffie was laughing. He didn’t eat me yesterday morning, but I think I felt him pour a little Worcestershire sauce down my back and on his way out he mouthed ‘marinate’ followed by motioning his paw from the left of his collar to the right. Steffie had an interview in Frankfurt so I was with her sister, Tinsha, and her father, Heinz. We were headed to two different castles and then a church. In truth, I was a little anxious because I wasn’t sure how the conversation would go during the trip. ... read more

Hello Reader. After turning off the computer around two in the morning the other night, I was headed down to bed. I tiptoed by Mr. and Mrs. Noppel’s room, quietly opened and closed the hallway door then reached to turn off the light… and I rang the doorbell. The dog went nuts. I was jumping around in embarrassment and emphatically whispering ‘SHHHH!’ to the ringing bell and barking dog. I, of course, woke up her parents and her dad came out to see if everything was okay… I was lucky he didn’t grab for one of his rifles on the way. I apologised profusely and he said no problem. I try so hard to be a good example for Americans over here… it seems like I run out of juice around two a.m. I woke up ... read more

Hello Reader. Steffie tried to wake me up at eight. I slept until nine thirty and then headed up for breakfast. She was excitedly waiting for me at the top of the stairs. I had some oats/granola mixed with cut apple and pear, raisins, and yogurt. ‘Good for energy - you’ll need it.’ Crap. We start out on our trip, Mrs. Noppel waving to us shouting ‘remember to take it easy on him.’ The signs just aren’t looking good for me. We bike for a while through the country. I have never seen so much farmland. It looked like rolling hills of Astroturf, except, you know, it was real. We passed pasture and fields for growing. It was a clear day and the Alps were a backdrop. The ride was moderate, only difficult sometimes. And except ... read more

Hello Reader. Have I got an entry for y’all. The past two days have been so full. And true to the Barnes nature, I’ve taken more pictures than I can count. If I could, I would upload every one of them. I might try starting a gallery, also offered on this site, but I haven’t really looked into it yet. But I’m getting off topic. After crashing following the Disco night, I woke up at 12 noon. We ate breakfast, packed, and headed for Southern Germany. We weren’t going through Heidelberg, (sorry, Zio, maybe on the way back through), we wanted to see Rothenburg ob der Tauber on the way to Steffie’s house. Rothenburg - which is fancy talk for small old town with a nice cat – is very traditional. It has a long wall ... read more
