Bebenhausen is to Tübingen as Zeeland is to Holland. Close to the same size and not far apart. I went to Bebenhausen this afternoon and saw the castle and the monistary there. The church that is connected to the monistary is the one that my host parents got married in. It was very beautiful, unfortunately I didn't take any pictures in the Schloss (castle) but I was the only person on the tour and it seemed rude to be taking pictures while the nice old guy was talking. For the artist, creating a blog can result in a masterpiece or a fit of procrastination. I guess I’ve fallen into the later category because this visit to Germany was really in February. To my defense, I will plead that life has just gotten in the way of art. I’ll blame work, which take up entirely too much time. Perhaps house construction - stucco applications to be exact - could be the culprit, but stucco is a giant art project. Let’s move on…. Two years ago, when I began traveling to Germany regularly, I wished for Italy… Spaghetti Vongole, Penna Arribiata, la lingua and la cultura, but I soon discovered Deutschland’s wonderful outdoors. The small village of Bebenhausen is located just a couple of miles north of Tuebingen city and about 45 kilometers south of Stuttgart. Here you can find one of the most important and most beautiful Cistercian monasteries in southwest Germany, second only to Maulbronn (if at all). It was built in 1187 AD and was sponsored by Count 'Rudolf von Tubingen' (I didn't know him either...). It was common for Cistercian monasteries to strive for economic independence. The Cistercians of Bebenhausen for example were trading with wine. Cheers! In 1807 the monastery became a hunting lodge and after WW II it was for a short time the venue of the parliament of Wuerttemberg-Hohenzollern before it was merged with Baden to create the State of 'Baden-Wuerrtemberg'.
