Wednesday 25th September 39 miles So breakfast was cereal, toast and orange juice sat in the kitchenette of the apartment. Then we packed up and were ready for the off and down into town for lunch provisions. We thought we would try the Boulangerie for sandwiches for a change but they didn't have any so we bought a small Quiche Lorraine each. The first two kilometres out of town were quite steep but after that the gradient was much more gentle. Up and up we went until the Col du Mas de l'Ayre at a mere 846m high. Then there was about ten miles of downhill with stunning scenery. Some how we seemed to be higher than yesterday because we were looking down on cliff faces, hills and millions of trees. We took a couple of ... read more

Thursday 26th September 54 miles Breakfast was upstairs from our bedroom in another lovely room very artistically put together with some very old things. Florence had got me some gluten free bread and there was home made stewed apples, yoghurt and jams. We bought 'trois fromage baguettes ' and yoghurts before setting off. The guide book had said there would be no shops for the next twenty four miles. We had to walk through the market that was on and there were lots of lovely local produce for sale including cheeses, meat, honey, olives, hand made soaps, scarves and jewellery. If we had been in a car I could have easily have bought lots of things. Most French towns have these markets and they always seem busy. Out of town and towards the gorges. The Pont ... read more

Friday 27th September 38 miles Breakfast had been left in the fridge in our apartment. It was a little sparse with orange juice, yoghurt, butter, jam, tea and coffee and two types of gluten free bread and some gluten free madeleines. One of the packs of gluten free was the kind that needs fifteen minutes in the oven to bake it so that was not edible. Fortunately, we had some granola with us that we had had to buy in Villefort so we could have sone of that with the yoghurt and followed it with bread and jam. We found a supermarket to start with and then we were heading East into Provence. It was mainly flat riding through vineyards and small villages with the mighty Ventoux getting gradually closer and closer. Each division of vines ... read more

We had a beautiful day today in Lyon. Kasie and Sriracha were with Clara and her family at an amusement park outside of Lyon. We planned to take to train to a vineyard outside of Lyon. The concierge at the hotel had given us instructions on the trains we needed to take. Unfortunately it was bad information and we were not at the correct train station. We decided to abandon the idea of the winery and walk back to our area of town as we had not seen this area of town. We had nice walk along the river. We had lunch at a restaurant on rue de Boef. After lunch we went through some of the shopping areas and then over to the art museum. We walked through the art museum. We saw lots of ... read more

Today we met with Clara and her family. In the morning we walked through old town until noon. We met Clara and her family at Moustache for lunch. We had a great time talking about when Sriracha and Clara were together in both th U.S. and in France in 2016. Clara and Charlise both go to school and have English in school so they both speak it very well. Virginie and Jimmy both speak some English as well so we didn't really have any issues with conversation. After lunch we took the Funiculaire Fourvaire, an uphill tram that is part of the Meto, to see the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourviere. The basilica was very beautiful. The overlook of the city was amazing. We walked down past the Roman Theatres and then through the gardens back ... read more

Travel today from Paris to Lyon. Took the subway from near our hotel with one transfer to the train station Gare de Lyon in Paris to Lyon. We got our tickets and waited for our train. It was on time and we had no issues. Once in Lyon it took us a bit to find the Metro station to take the subway to our hotel. There was construction going on and we had difficulty finding the stairs down, but after we figured it out we had no issues on the subway. Our hotel is only a few minutes walk from the subway station Bellecour. Sriracha was again taking pictures all day, but those will have to be added later. We had dinner at a nice restaurant with the creme brulee to finish the meal.... read more

Just like in 2015, we bought tickets to the Women's World Cup not even knowing if the USA Women's team would even be in the finals. But of course, the USA Women's soccer team is better than all soccer teams, women or men, to ever exist in my opinion; and they did end up getting into the finals. No offense, but the USA women's soccer team is the only bit of patriotism I have. So we went to Lyon and this would be the first international trip with my sister, Maja. The first day was sight seeing around Lyon and the first journey was a tram to a church. Now, I am not a big fan of churches, because I am not a fan of organized religion so it made me a little queasy, but it ... read more

A beautiful last day in Chamonix and we were lucky in that our last day here was the opening day for the Brevent lift system summer season. It is a two-stage system that on a clear day provides great views of the whole region and of Mont Blanc - and today was a crystal clear day. Saw lots of hang gliders and watched them taking off. Got some video action that we can share if anyone is interested (the blog doesn't support video). This adventure is just about wrapped up. Take a bus to Geneva tomorrow morning. Our first time, albeit brief, in Switzerland and then fly to Amsterdam in the afternoon. Monday morning head back to SFO. Take off at noon and land at 2:00 pm - only a 2 hr flight if you forget ... read more

Got the "money shots" today with pictures. Will let the pictures do most if the talking. We did: - Train ride to Montenvers and Mer de Glace (which at one time was the largest glacier in Europe) - Telepherique ride to du Plan de l'Aiguille - that is only mid-point to what should have been our final destination but 60 mph winds would not all us to go to the top - maybe tomorrow. ... read more
