Monday, Sept 17, 2012 - Our last stop in the Loire, Gien, for faiance pottery, had to be cancelled - our drive to Blauzac in Provence was going to take about 6-7 hours WITHOUT stops. Just as well, how would I get it home? Spent the whole day driving, rolling in about 7:30. We stopped at a market in Uzes, a town nearby, and bought dinner and breakfast. Our GPS can be a bit dodgy sometimes and combine that with a navigator who misses turns, or a driver who says THAT CAN’T BE RIGHT, or a GPS who sometimes takes too long to recalibrate, it makes for interesting trips. We end up often on backroads, but it is the best way to see the place, and find those wonderful little towns that you would never see ... read more

Today was our first day on the River Royale the Uniword cruise we will call home for 7 days and nights. The cruise offered several day tours of Arles, castle beax, etc. since we were already shown around Arles and most of the same tours by Jane, we chose to sleep in and walk in to Arles on our own after lunch to see the antiquities theater. We love to travel and see as much as we can but we also find that we also need some down time too. Today was that day, we slept late, went down for breakfast late and did not go on the Arles tour with the cruise guests. After lunch we walked in to Arles and found the theater and walked around the arena that was built 1st century BC. ... read more

Today I booked an all day private Provence tour with Jane Satow of Experience Provence. She picked us up at our Avignon hotel when we checked out. I found Jane online and we corresponded on what we wanted to do for the day. Jane lived in Boulder CO for 11 years and graduated from CU. She married, had 3 children and now lives outside St. Remy and operates a tourist travel co. She was delightful and we thoroughly enjoyed our day with her. First stop, the famous Pont du Gard roman aqueduct built in the 1st century. Absolutely a marvelous piece of construction by the Romans. We toured and walked across the 16th century pedestrian bridge and enjoyed the musee on the building of the 30 mile long water system to Nimes. It is so amazing ... read more

We visited Arles on our last day in Provence. There are several Roman structures in town, with the Roman amphitheatre being the largest. The drive was about 1 hour from Aix. We first went to the Museum of Ancient History a little outside of center of Arles. It covered the history of Arles from prehistoric times to the Roman times. There were very interesting artifacts: coins, jewelry, statues, intricately carved building decorations, gorgeous mosiac floors, sarcophaguses. And there were also interesting models of the amphitheatre, the theatre, a Roman housing complex built into the side of a hill that used aqueducts and gravity to supply the houses with water and other structures. After the museum we drove into the center of town and went in search of lunch. We found a little sandwich shop that sold ... read more

We were early at our campsite near Arles as we managed to be up and away from Agde by 11.30am. So we set off on our bikes to the old centre of Arles, supposedly, say our campsite, to be 2 kilometres away, supposedly was the right word. We had been before when Terry was young. However he was once again dragged around the old haunts and scenes painted by Michelle's favourite artist Van Gogh. We even sat and had a drink in the cafe made famous by his painting 'Cafe Terrace at Night'' and we certainly paid for the privilege. We returned to our campsite about 8.30pm and took a stroll around. Hearing noises we saw a group of people watching Germany versus Holland on a TV outside a gigantic German motor home. Terry ventured forward ... read more

The next couple of days were spent taking the train to Arles for a day-trip to see some of the sites that Van Gogh painted, including the famous Cafe De La Nuit. Reading reviews that it was overpriced and not very good (proven by the single table of 2 eating there), we decided to have lunch at a cafe in the same square, which was filled with people. Back in Avignon, Matt & I walked the entire city, stopping in little shops around the way, including one of my favorites, the grocery store Carrefour. We had our final meal in Avignon (and France) and the recommended Chez Francois, which did not disappoint. It was there that Matt found his favorite wine, perhaps of all time.... read more

We had chosen to stay in Salon de Provence, not because of its wonderful sights, but because it was central to many of the places we wanted to visit in the region and Arles was one of them. A quiet drive along the N113 took us into Arles where we found a convenient, free, all day carpark. A quick visit to the Tourist Office soon had us armed with maps and information about Arles. The city has a history going back to at least 1 BC and the Roman occupation. It was obviously a very important city at the time. The important sights we visited included the amphitheatre, theatre, Roman baths and the Cathedral Saint-Trophime. The region is obviously proud of its historical past and vast sums of money are being spent on restoration and preservation ... read more

Today would also take me out of Marseille to the nearby town of Arles. I do have to say that train travel in France is so easy, convenient and efficient. All of the trains I have taken have left exactly on time, are clean and the automated machines for the purchase/retrieval of tickets are so easy to use. The security at the train station is also quite present with both police and military presence in the stations. I have also felt very safe the whole time that I have been here. Not once so far have I felt like I was not. The French have been lovely, warm and quite welcoming. The fact that I speak French does help and my Canadian accent definitely piques their interest. Vous avez un accent charmant Mademoiselle … you never ... read more

The wind was to strong to go to the beach today, so I went to paint in Arles. I finished the painting of the Arena then went Henry's house to drop off one painting and pick up another canvas. Henry has given me the key to his home, people hardy ever lock their door here even though there is a big Gypsy culture and a lot of thieves. Henry said that if you leave your door open it's because you have nothing to steal, and people only want what is coveted. I then went to paint the town hall and Obelisk and roman church in the spot that I met Henry a few days ago. Today is the solstice the longest day of the year and the French have their festival of music which goes all ... read more
