At the recommendation of our hosts, we are off to visit our first village - Aubuterre. Aubuterre is about 15 minutes from Chalais and is listed as "One of the Beautiful Villages in France". This sounds like the perfect recommendation for a visit and one you will see us use in the future. This village was built in the 11th and 12th century with a typical "Centre de Ville" and shops around. For us, it is an opportunity to practice our driving skills in narrow, twisty streets. Sure am glad we decided on a smaller car. Better to have a bit less leg room but turn the car in with all it's fenders and mirrors. In the early days of the village, the monks carved an amazing underground church out of the cliff. Once finished, it ... read more

Finally, after months of planning, we have arrived to begin our adventure in France. We are starting in a less visited but very beautiful area of France called Poitou-Charentes. It includes Bordeaux, St Emilion and the areas south and east. The Maritime portion of this area has lovely seaports on the Atlantic. But we will be living for a month in the Charentes, which is far different. Farmlands abound and at this time of year it is all about the last harvest and turning the dirt for the winter. Cognac is within this region but the local farmers make an apertif called Pineau de Charentes that is a less alcoholic tasting combination of wine and cognac in red and white varieties. Our small village of Chalais is about an hour south of Angouleme. It is typical ... read more

Today we have had a lazy day. Too lazy even to get the scooter out of the garage so we had to walk into La Romieu where we had a bit of a stroll, looked in through the gates at the beautiful Unesco World Heritage protected abbey, but didn’t go in as we did that in full last visit then stopped for a leisurely coffee before walking back to the campsite armed with the obligatory fresh baguette for our lunch. We could have scootered round the area, there are lots of lovely towns and villages to visit - Condom , Larrasingle , Montreal , Seviac , Fources , Lectoure , Saint-Puy but we have visited them all in our previous 2003/2008 trips so as I said, we lazily did not a lot of anything today. ... read more

Time to move on, almost directly south, over the Vezere and then the Dordogne river and down to the Ger in beautiful pastoral Gascony. Bob and Clarissa Tomtom had planned a route last night which went in a pretty straight line and took us along roads we had not used before. We were quite surprised by this as we thought we had probably seen all the stretches of the Dordogne that there are to see but we took a road south from Campagne, a rather attractive town on the Vezere, to Siorac-en-Perigord on the Dordogne, and decided we had not been this way before. I am about to correct that, we have been to Siorac before. In June 2003 we stayed in a gite in Mouzens just over the river, with Nigel and Lynne and ... read more

Woke to another glorious blue sky day. We are finding it hard to believe that we have been so lucky in finding our 2012 summer even if we have had to wait until September. This lovely weather seems to be all across France and England but a quick check on the forecast says that the southern part of France should be great for at least the next 10 days but the UK will not fare as well. At a roasting 31 degrees today we won’t be too upset if it the temperature drops by a couple of degrees. It can get quite hot in a Tandy. Had to cover my shoulders for the scooter ride today as the sun got me a little yesterday and even hotter today. We went west along the island to ... read more

Early (ish – we are on holiday !) start to the day as we were visiting the lovely market in La Flotte which is mornings only and very busy. There are two excellent fish stalls but unfortunately we don’t recognize many varieties of fish on sale and also have the problem of not wanting to prepare anything too ‘fish smelly’ in the Tandy. I decided to take the easy option and buy sea bass. The first stall didn’t have any (I discovered this only after accidentally jumping the queue to the indignation of the French lady at the front). The second stall did so I pointed at a nice plump fish and asked for it to be filleted. Oops really should have checked the price first. So expensive I am not going to say here how ... read more

I only realised as I sat down to type this that we came to La Flotte (and from Coulon) on the same date last year. Hadn’t realised how closely our route this time is taking us to last September’s but it will change soon as we are heading ever southwards. As last year we realised we needed to get to the campsite early if we were to get a pitch. There are lots of campsites on the Ile de Ré but we wanted the same one we used last year, La Grainetiere at La Flotte as we really liked it and it’s location. http://www.la-grainetiere.com/ We had originally thought we might spend a night in La Rochelle on the way here as Bob had found an aire which would have allowed us to spend the day ... read more

Had a pleasantly disturbed sleep. There seemed to be owls all round, hooting and toowit toowooing at each other, and as it was such a lovely clear night the sounds carried right across the campsite. I note that now as I type this the evening serenade has already started. This really is a lovely place, beautifully green and very peaceful, except for the owls that is. What a glorious day. Exactly as forecast, summer has finally arrived and long may it last. First day I have put on shorts and sun-top as soon as I got up and the first day I have needed suntan lotion. We scootered into Coulon, only a couple of miles, along the river and followed a couple of 'no entry', 'locals only' signs to the riverbank where we parked the scooter. ... read more

Time to move on, south-west this time in the general direction of the sea but stopping before we get to the coast. A cross-country route, avoiding Poitiers, through miles and miles of arable farmland most just harvested. Never seen so many bails stacked up / such enormous ‘hay stacks’. We were a little puzzled. If some of this was for winter silage then where on earth are the animals. Not a cow in sight (and we would have seen them if they had been there as the area is very flat) just never ending fields of golden stubble with a few patches of enormous sunflowers and the occasional vine mixed in. The weather got better the further south we went and was really quite warm, for the first time, when we stopped for lunch by ... read more

BLOG 12 Monday 2 July – So there we were still on the island of Oleron – northern end, at St Denis. It was a cool overcast morning, so we slobbed it in the van ‘til after lunch. Off on the bikes again in the increasing bright weather cross-county on a round trip to Les Huttes, where we had an ice-cream and watched the surfers, back across the island to La Bree-les-Bains again to see if we’d missed anything the first time......we hadn’t – then finally back to St Denis for refreshments and in search of wi-fi. Discovered a harbour-front bar with free connection, so B cycled back for the laptop and we enjoyed a demi-picheur of white as we checked emails and blogged in the sunshine.
