Well after 2 weeks in paradise it is time to move on. During our time there we met a fabulous young couple who have created their own haven in Aquitaine. Their vision, and sympathy towards buildings, natural materials and nature were second to none, and we were certainly privileged to house sit for them. They have the most beautiful and HAPPY baby I have EVER seen - and I have seen a few! The other people working there were very welcoming and all had stories to tell about why they have found themselves in this part of France. I so love hearing about peoples experiences and adventures. What makes us who we are is everyday life and skills, how you use them, and having the courage to be different or take a chance. Its so important ... read more

Our journey took us from Beynac to the tiny village of Couhe about 48 kms from Poitiers. The road Sally Sat Nav chose was winding , simply beautiful with grass verges full of tiny flowers. The villages we drove through were pretty. Yellow sandstone with gardens full of colour. The boulangeries and charcuteries open for business. The sun shone on us as we headed for our overnight stop. We passed few cars along the way. The winding road was fairly empty. Occaisionally one came on the opposite carriageway and then one passed us. There seemed little traffic on the road and for this we were grateful. Driving as it should be. At one point we saw a red sports car settling in behind us. Was it a Ferrari we wondered? Or an Audi TT? It overtook ... read more

Via D742 to Gencay ,D102 from Brion to the L'Isle -Jourdain a small village on the banks of the Vienne. D8 to Confolens .(for my sister following the route on map ) Stayed in modern hotel last night ,the one we were supposed to stay was closed for painting .There was no other accomodation in the town which was disconcerting as we don't have a tent. There were no Chateaux for several miles ! Woke to wall to wall sunshine but strong gusty winds which made for difficult cycling. We were told the route was to be reasonably fast & flat, they lied ! Up hill & down dale all along the banks of the river. The landscape again had huge fields with no hedges to break the wind but it didn't stop Mark ! The land ... read more

Last night was spent in the keep of Chateau du Saint -Loup. The Chateau is being restored but used for functions. The Comte spoke perfect Engish & made us welcome in his own home with a big roaring fire & BBC television on in the lounge. We were the only guests & were served at breakfast by the Comte himself after which he gave us a guided tour of the amazing Chateau & grounds. Back on our bikes for a pleasant ride .In contrast to the arable open land of the early part of this stage, high hedgerows now divide up lush green pastureland. The hedgerows are beautiful full of speedwell, bluebells, herb robert & buttercups. Along the way we were joined by noisy frogs(the four legged variety) .Have seen lots of wild life on the route.I had my first sighting ... read more

I went to la Rochelle two times while I stayed in a nearby town called Rochefort for 5 weeks. The first one was when Anik (my host in Rochefort) took me to La Rochelle to see a Russian tall ship and the second one when I went to see a film festival. La Rochelle was founded in the 10th Century and became an important port in the 12th Century. The main activities of the city were maritime trade and commerce. La Rochelle has had a very interesting history; including being the Knights Templar’s largest base in the Atlantic, having been under English Rule, having participated in the 100 Years War, becoming protestant and having suffered at least 2 sieges in its early history, the last one by Cardinal Richelieu. It had booms and declines, moments of ... read more

I spent 5 weeks in a town called Rochefort, situated along the Charente River, to try and improve my limited knowledge of French and experience everyday life in the country. Spending about 2 months in France was one of the things I had thought about doing during this trip. Mainly, because I wanted to be forced into speaking the language. Before leaving on this trip, while I was in Chile I went to the French Consulate to see if there was any chance of getting a student visa to study French for a while. But that wasn't really an option as it was way too expensive to pay for courses. So I just let the idea hang for a while and see if any opportunities opened up during my travels. And they did. While I was ... read more

With our holiday almost over we pointed Suzy up north through the Poitou Charentes department of France. We were heading for a small fishing village on the Gironde called Mortagne sur Gironde which we had read about in a blog called Our Tour written by two long term travellers in their motorhome Dave. Having read that there was the only memorial in welsh on french soil what self respecting Welshman or woman could miss it? The coastline is lovely in that part of the world and the weather pleasant too. Our stop for the night was to be an aire. We had used german ones for a while but this was to be our first taste of a french one. We usually baulked at stopping as we like showers when it is hot but to go ... read more

Perigueux, Poitiers & Futuroscope in France 17 September 2013 After leaving Bergerac in the Dordogne Valley, we headed north towards Perigueux which was surrounded by undulating farmland with lots of mature sunflower and maize crops. Moving onto Angouleme and again this town was mixed with the old and the new. We loved these towns (see photos). We then arrived at Poitiers which has about 85,000 and therefore larger than the previous towns we had visited. Like the other towns, its character was centered on a river and its old town centre. This town had a city wall which was well preserved. We wanted to see the Futuroscope which was a massive multi building attraction for all ages. Every building was of a different shape. We found a camp site just north of Poitiers. The next morning ... read more

A tour of medieval villages of It had to happen at some stage and this morning we woke to the sound of thunder in the distance and some flashes of lightening along with steady light rain. And the warm temperatures of the past days have gone, replaced by a much cooler feel as we opened the windows to see what the people of the village were up to.Actually, they weren’t up to anything and like us had stayed in bed. We had a late breakfast and a very relaxed morning reading and catching up on some administration as the weather outside started to improve. Then as we planned to head off for a drive to some local villages and sightseeing the light rain came back again and so we postponed heading out until after lunch. The ... read more
