After yesterdays very warm temperatures the night didn’t cool down too much so all we had to contend with was the hard bed. We have our fingers crossed for something softer tonight at the apartment in Briguieul that we are heading for. It is another cloudless day and it promises to be warm again and after going through the check by the camp office staff that we hadn’t mistakenly packed any of the mobile home bits and pieces in our car we were on our way. First we drove down to the beach of the town we have been staying in. The camp was about 4km from the beach so it hadn’t been practical to walk down there and back just to see what it was like. The town itself is very spread out for a ... read more

Riding on the French rail system is quite different from the Spanish. If it’s just an ordinary train ( not an TVE i.e. fast train) since I have a Eurail pass I don’t have to boo...k a seat but just get on and find a vacant seat, and be ready to show my pass to the inspector by completing the information for that journey on the pass. It seems strange but it seems to work! I sat in a compartment with 7 other very hot people (the AC did not work) on the train from Bordeaux. It said on the departure board that the train would be 15 minutes late leaving. That then became 25 minutes and the people in the compartment indicated that this is normal for the French train system. 45 Minutes late and ... read more

Just to the north of Poitiers lies the "intellectual theme park" of Futuroscope. This was the real reason we stayed in the area. Keeping costs down we opted for the B&B(2) Hotelwhich is right next door to the B&B(1) but cheaper! It was basic but more than met our needs. We also found that we could walk to Futuroscope from there too, which was a bonus. Not that they wanted you to walk: there were no footpaths encouraging you to drive and pay 7 Euros to park for the day. We braved the traffic!! On the website there were various deals offering packages with a hotel and the entrance ticket. We found that it was better value to book a hotel and pay for our entry at the gate. Even at 39 Euros each to go ... read more

We've left Pamplona. It's hard to believe that it's only been a few days. In that time we had a 5 hour drive down to Mataro where we'll be setting up home in September. After a couple of days there and dropping off a lot of our possessions, we headed up into France. Another 5 hour drive saw us just to the north of Toulouse and a further 4 hours today brought us to Poitiers. Now Sunday evenings were never going to be very lively. Nevertheless we drove down into town and parked up near the Botanical Gardens. From there we walked into the centre which is really quite nice. It was beautiful walking around but everything was closed, except for some very expensive bars on the central square and a couple of North African restaurants. ... read more

With some clouds in the sky and the sun trying to peek out we made a good start and headed to …… McDonalds, purely to use the Wifi and post yesterday’s blog of course, although a coffee seemed only civil whilst we were there. Leaving La Rochelle behind we set our sights for Saintes. Woolly says – It was a nice drive, although I think we are getting a bit blasé about the countryside now. Gone are the cries of cows, sheep and other points of interest on our route, instead we settled back with a bit of Marrillion and let the kilometres race away. We found our destination easily, Jo and I knew what it was but Ian had refused to show us any pictures and seeing it for the first time I was glad. ... read more

We should have felt fully rested after a day off…..not really, the disco from one of the Chalets on the site was still rocking at 4am when Ian went to complain (along with many others), so slightly tired but with Oliver wanting to go we packed and were off in no time. We had spent the previous day doing very little but we did discover a fantastic Buffet Chinese – Hot Wok - (700 metres from the site) for 13.90 Euros each, (Approximately £11.30 GBP), eat as much as you can – and we did! Before going back into lazy mode for the rest of the day. Woolly says – I quite enjoyed the disco!!!! They played one of my favourites, all together now “I like to move it, move it”!! We were off to the ... read more

Monday 17/09/12 La Rochelle K&O are going back home today but as they have a late flight out of Orly we had time to go up to Le Mans for a quick look. Marnie had recommended us to see the old town and as it was just 45 minutes up the road we were off. OK, it was worth a look but as Lyn and I were heading in the opposite direction I didn’t enjoy it as I probably should have if I had had more time. We walked around for an hour but then we said good bye to our friends and set our GPS for La Rochelle while they stayed for lunch and then drove up to Paris. In La Rochelle we went straight to the tourist info only to be told that there ... read more

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2012 - Up BRIGHT AND EARLY to drive 3 1/2 hours to Limoges to pick up a friend at the airport for a 3-day visit while we are in the Dordogne. Then we had to drive 1 1/2 hours to our swap in Villebois-Lavalette, near Angouleme. I am in the heart of Eleanor of Aquitaine country! We have found, or our friend has, that there is a very good restaurant in the town we are staying so that is where we headed to dinner. The name of the restaurant is Le Lavalette, and yes, it IS excellent. We were lucky in that we didn't have reservations, and were one of two tables served that evening. I have decided to stop eating so much (quality, not quantity you know...) so I had a lamb ... read more

We are going today to a town called Brantome east of Angouleme. It is known as the "Venice of France". We lived in Venice CA and are anxious to see if this town is an worthy rival for the title. There is a small church here and what was once a monastery is now offices including the Tourist information office. The beauty of this town is clearly the river and the park beside. This park was built as a place for the monks to meditate and it still serves the purpose well. A few souvenirs shops and cafes line the cobblestone street along the river. Since we are here in the fall, the town is not as jammed as it could be. But the weather is still warm enough to encourage outside wandering. So we wander ... read more

We decided to expand our horizons and take a road trip to Castle De Rogeac or the Castle in the Rock. It was built in the 12th century but there have been folks living here since prehistoric times. It was a natural cliff with a cave that the builders expanded until it became a multistory castle. It is well protected with a great view of all the land around, so good for defensive action. There are two approaches labeled Steep and easy. In my opinion, both require a bit of sweat. Of course, how else would you get into a castle on a cliff? On the lowest level, the kitchen is a great picture of cooking in those times. Lots of antique utensils and a beautiful 16th century sideboard. On this same level there is a ... read more
