The last part of our tour is to take in France, and unfortunately, it is a bit farther away than we had hoped. All our long drives seem to be in this tail end - but seeing as we only have 4 nights left, we had best make the most of a bad bus situation J 700 k’s meant reading - and Iz and I were both buried in books to pass the time. It is great seeing him read, as he doesn’t pick up a book at home. Now he has read two more, with a third underway (I talked him into reading Cloudstreet, and he’s loving it?) We managed to arrive at our final destination, the holy city of Lourdes at 5pm, and I decided to watch some tele, while Iz went for a ... read more

So I last wrote a few days ago while I was in Tarbes. Later that day I rode to Lourdes which wasn't that far of a ride. I decided to stay there for 2 nights and take some time to see the city and then ride up to the finish of a stage at le Col d'Aubisque. I really liked this town and it has been by far the best one yet. Found a hotel near the train station and spent the rest of the afternoon/evening wandering around the town. This place is a zoo of catholic tourists/pilgrimages. I wasn't aware of this but apparently Lourdes is the place where the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette at the "Grotto". Now there is a huge Basilica built on top of the spot and there are tons ... read more

Egg 2. Hi all . We left Toulouse on the 14th September and drove South toward the Pyrenees (pair of knees). The landscape quickly became mountainous once we cleared the outskirts of Toulouse - its was stunningly lush and green and super hilly. Actually at times - were it not for the brilliant sunshine - you might have mistaken the surroundings for Scotland. We had a short lunch stop in Lourdes, just to see what it was like really, as the Senior eggs have been a few times. The upper part of Lourdes seems just like any other southern French town. The area is gorgeous and has a lovely Swiss feel to it. We parked up and strolled down to toward the Grotto. Although I´m not a religous person myself, I found the experience relatively interesting. ... read more

Motorhome News from Europe 3 France. 21st September 2004 Bordeaux and South along the Atlantic Coast Having said farewell to Sonia in Limoges, we headed through heavy rain west to Bordeaux country and the wine town of St Emilion, a name surely on everybody’s lips at some time in their lives. There were vineyards as far as the eye could see in every direction, purple grapes just about ready for harvesting and every cave in the town seemed to be selling wine and sign after elaborate sign seemed to point to yet another chateaux. St Emilion itself is immaculate and drools with money - a place to admire, a centre of commerce - but not a place to live, Janice would tell you. At last the temperature was dropping, now approaching 18C from a sweltering 37C ... read more

My boss invited me to go to Lourdes way before we set to Europe. Although I am not a Catholic, I said to myself why not go there, see the place and check out the miracle water. We went to Lourdes from Paris via train again and checked into a hotel not far from the church. Although you know there were lots of pilgrims, the place was quiet. We went to the site and my boss took the opportunity to join the prayer parade that night. I just sat at a bench and watched the people mostly elderly pray with their candles went around the grounds then to the church for more prayers. Next day we were early to visit the church, Grotto and check out the miracle water. I drank the pure (as they ... read more
