Well its been a cool, crazy and amazing last month starting off in London, UK and now in Ploermel, France (or Brittany for the Bretons:). Before we headed off on our travels we had a family meeting and reunion and a party with Jean's mates to celebrate our marriage... since they hadn't quite got the magic carpet service from France to Australia for our wedding in oz :) After 4 months with only speaking to each other through some dodgy skype connections and the odd phone call and text message it was quite nice to see the frog husband at Heathrow when I arrived on the 4th Sept. We then probably spent about another 10 hours that day at the airport waiting for my family to arrive...all on different flights! We spent a couple of days ... read more

After we leave Mont St. Michel we drive southwest to Rennes (the capitol of Brittany). On the way we see old style windmills that are built on the reclaimed fields overlooking the bay where Mont St. Michel is located, and our first Menhir (standing stone) . Our next home exchange is in St. Jacques-de-la-Lande, a suburb of Rennes. This home will be our base for the next few days. Over the next few days we visit Rennes and the medieval towns of Dinan and St. Malo. ... read more

Day 6 (Wednesday, September 2, 2009) We headed out of Mont. St. Michel early this morning in order to get a head start on our day. I was hoping to possibly see blue skies, but, unfortunately, that was not the case so my mostly cloudy and gray photos of the Mont from the day prior would have to suffice. Our first stop of the day was in the seaside town of Cancale. This small town of about 6,000 residents is famous for its many oyster beds, but we came to simply stroll the quiet backstreets and to enjoy the gorgeous water views. We also stopped in at a bakery to purchase our daily ration of croissants and Mike picked out a flan tart, which was very good. From Cancale, we drove over to a gorgeous ... read more

Ploubazlanec on the Cote d'Armor was one of the places I looked forward to visiting purely because of its name and the towns you have to pass through to get there. PLOO-BAZ-LAN-ECK. PLOUBAZLANEC. On the way and surrounding are Le Cabaret, Pleudaniel, Squiffiec, Ploumagoar, Lezardrieux, Plouagat, Plouisy, Plouadis and Plouadat. Way to name your bourgs Bretons! Diving into the life of a bonvivant began with dinner at the Ferme du Kerroc'h. Nathalie was expecting a meal in ramshackle rural farmhouse. The ferme Kerroc'h however was a farm which had long ago been converted into a cosy local eatery and therefore wasn't set in a patchwork of fields but plonked on the side of the main road into town. We were not disappointed by our welcome. One host, one bar lady, one waitress: all in rolled into ... read more

Thursday, July 30-Fougeres, and the Forest of Paimpont (Brocliande) Today is our last day in St Jacques. When Dean returns from the pool, we pack a lunch and drive to Fougeres, another walled city, but this one with the chateau/castle restored. From the tourist info center, we walk past the points of interest to the church of St Leonard. Behind the church are amazing public gardens that cover the entire hill leading down into the old city to the chateau. One stairway is made of stone carved to look like logs, and the gardens are more wild/natural than manicured. It is beautiful, but I am glad we are walking down the hill, not up. The chateau itself is very well restored, but the English audio guide tour is a bit cheesy. It is interesting going through ... read more

Sunday, July 26 Mont St. Michel, Menhir du Champ-Dolent, and St. Jacques-de-la-Lande When we returned at night to our room, we are assailed by the fragrance of the cheese we had bought at the market in Bayeux. Since we have a wide windowsill, we promptly left the bag outside on the sill for the night. Breakfast is served from 8:15-9:30. Again, our hosts have been thoughtful for Jackie, and have fresh fruit, soft farmer cheese and yogurt for her. The cheese and yogurt was actually “artisian” made by their neighbor who has a dairy farm. We have baguettes, homemade brioche, and homemade apple and apricot jams, too. We have a table for four to ourselves. The other guests are all down for breakfast by the time we return to our room. The French conversation is lively. ... read more

Saturday, July 25 We wake to a French breakfast of croissants, baguette, and 4 kinds of confit (jam- strawberry, strawberry-rhubarb, apricot, and currant) that our host, Michel and Marie, made themselves from their garden. Marie also bought some gluten-free rolls for Jackie, so we begin our day with a good breakfast. We have everything packed up, and will return for our luggage in the afternoon. Our plan is to see the Bayeux Tapestry. This tapestry is 70 yards long, and is made of linen. It was embroidered sometime after 1066, and tells the story of how William becomes the conqueror, besting Harold in battle for the throne of England and France. It is amazing that it has survived all these years despite being used during the revolution as a drape for a wagon (one of the ... read more

The second day in St. Malo, we visited all other places which we couldn't visit on our first day. We wondered around the city wall and spend most of the time window shopping and taking photos. There were a lot of visitors compared to the previous rainy day. Whenever we felt hungry, we ate mussels and chip, then gallets and caramel crepes to the end. During our meal time, we tossed our glasses up filled with cider glasses. The time ran faster than we expected. We headed back to the train station 30 minutes before our departure but we forgot to get our tickets checked only last five minutes before the departure. I ran like a lunatic on the platform and reach the ticket checker to realise that I had the wrong ticket in my hands. ... read more

South Brittany - Concarneau to Belle Ille Well we ended up staying much, much longer in Concarneau than we had anticipated; simple reason was that we enjoyed the place so much. We were able to enjoy the Bastille Day Eve Celebrations, Nikki wanted to have her birthday here and we were finally able to catch up with John and Sue Allison from Swagman. We heard from the Tourist Info Office that the Concarnians (for want of a better word) always celebrate Bastille Day on the evening of the 13th of July and there were going to be bands and fireworks so that sounded pretty good to us so we decided to stay on for a bit longer. We had been making daily sojourns into the old town to listen to the buskers, buy ice creams and ... read more
