Hey Guys, Its summer time again which must mean its time to go wandering with my bike. I’m with my brother this year and we’re travelling round France...hope you enjoy! After a very comfortable night sleep on the floor of the ferry we docked at Saint Malo at 8.30 French time and it was time for Chris’ baptism of fire in the morning traffic of Saint Malo. With no real street map but a good ‘general idea’ of where we were going we set off . Next was a town called Dinan where we found breakfast and some supplies for the day (although we did cycle past the supermarket on the first attempt giving us two chances of riding up the same hill). After this we had several hours of cycling along fast relativley empty french ... read more

Today we have a full day trip and fortunately Tim feels good again so I don’t have to go stag. Catch a taxi to the train station (sounds odd I know, catching a taxi to catch a train, unfortunately to catch a train from near the hotel we have to switch a trains a couple of times and we just don’t have that kind of time - Tim is not a morning person!) After finding our train we discover our seats are facing backwards. Now anyone who knows me knows I get train sick in about 5 minutes facing the wrong way (that’s why I drive them, always guaranteed to be facing the right way, hahaha!), so since the seats are really big, I swivel around in my seat so my back is leaning on the ... read more

Rennes: Rennes was an interesting place. It was a reasonably sized settlement where, it seemed, the students had a grasp of the streets. Graffiti everywhere, but not the usual commonly found French graffiti, here it was street art. That and the dirty, stone, medieval buildings gave it a slight Gothic but definitely grungy feel. I had not heard from Mr 'T' since I had contacted him a few days before leaving home. The arrangements were vague and general, “not sure which day but I’ll call before I arrive”. I had tried to call but I hadn’t received an answer. We were nearing the outskirts of Rennes, when he finally got in touch. We arranged to meet in the town square. The square was alight with atmosphere. There was a collective of bars and restaurants many with ... read more

We had a long day exploring Rennes, and we and the students learned a bit more of the history of this lovely city. We started in the Jardin du Thabor, moved onto L'Eglise St. Melaine, then explored several old quarters of the city before going shopping and meeting up with host families. Here are a few sample pictures of the day's activities! ... read more

Bonjour tout le monde! It's hard to believe that 5 days have already passed since the journey began with this group of students. It was a wild beginning to the trip, with a 3 hour delay at the St. Louis airport and BARELY making the flight from Chicago to Paris (the airline held the plane for us for about 25 mins because we were such a large group). But it gave us an early insight into how our students would deal with and adapt to unexpected changes; all were amazingly good sports with zero complaining! Some students played cards, a small group did a couple of "laps" around the terminal, others read or listened to iPods, some chatted with us, and all adapted well to the unexpected delays. It bode well for the trip as a ... read more

Dear Peeps Have been coming back to the apartment / hotels and just falling straight into bed so have absolutely no time to write about our adventures. I'm only writing now as I'm in my room sick with a cold! By the way, it's still freezing here. Today we had a top of 10 degrees! On our last day in Paris we went to the Musee du Vin (wine museum) for lunch where the waiter gave Dad free cognac and then hit on me when Dad wasn't looking. The museum is based underground in an old quarry in the middle of Paris which was later used as a cellar for the restaurants based in the Eiffel tower. We then strolled across to the Arc de Triomphe which mum and dad kept calling the Champs de Elysees ... read more

the flight to paris was three and a half hours late, so we had prepared ourselves for the long haul at the waiting lounge, using our favorite tool to kill time, anupama and me think on same wavelength on this issue. started with ice cream and moved on to tea and chips when we the heard the boarding call just half an hour after the scheduled time. the announcer was not so sure and would stop in the middle, so we ignored the first few announcements as a mistake. but after the third one they could not be ignored further and the flight did actually start just after an hours delay. looks like we are going by road, anupama commented sleepily as the plane taxied for almost an hour before taking off. the delay in the ... read more

Thursday 11.3.2010 day 149 Carnac - standing stones in Brittany We drove from Paris to Carnac today. Once we got to Carnac we checked into our wonderful hotel with fantastic views across the river. We then went to the Carnac Alignments a Neolithic site that is 6,000 years old. Legion has that the stones were Roman legionaries turned to stone and local belief had them to be Magical stones. From 1830 onward the French started to buy and preserving the megaliths. This site has about 4 thousand stones and goes over 4 km the tallest stone it about 6 meters high. We then drove to the nearby site des megaliths de locmariaquer which dates back 6,500 years and stands at the entrance to the gulf of the Morbithan. Here there is 20.6 meter stone that weighs ... read more

Ireland was incredible, Scotland was a divine revelation and England was ... ok? Even If I had a blast in London, England in general is totally outmatched by its two neighbors ... from a traveller point of view. I'm glad to be on the continent now, especially for the food ... and a few other things. After a once in a lifetime experience in Scotland, my stay in York and Oxford was a bit of a disappointment. York c'est un peu comme la ville de Quebec : Super beau, meme cute, tres propre ... pi c'est ca! Pour ce qui est de Oxford, c'est probablement mieux y etudier que la visiter. But London on the other hand, was great! In my opinion, it is a bit like New York City : I wouldn't live here but ... read more

THE EARLY YEARS IN INDONESIA There is nothing, absolutely nothing, half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats. Was that not from The Wind in the Willows? My first boating experience started with a sailing dinghy moored at Tandjung Priok, the harbour of Djakarta in Indonesia. Those sailing trips to the small coral islands in the Java Sea, I will forever remember. Our little sailing boats left port early in the morning. The sea is usually calm, with just enough wind to make 3 knots. After a 2 or 3 hour sail a small island appears and soon we drag the boat on shore. Coral is very sharp and we all wear old tennis shoes for protection. The servants arrived before us in a motor launch and chairs and tables have been set ... read more
