Fun with doris! After a beautiful 3 weeks with the amazing children and people in Vengadampatty we were lucky enough to have Mr T offer us to borrow a spare motorbike to travel around and check out more of 'incredible india' (as the marketing says). The bike was a Bajaj, almost 20 yrs old, hadn't been used for at least 6 months (so Mr T didn't know if it still worked), had plates from Rajastan, had an almost bald back tire, had no battery...so no horn or indicators (no indicators was not really a problem becasue people don't really use them anyway...but no horn in india is like having no steering wheel on a car). Anyway...the lend of his bike was too good to refuse...so we named her Doris (thanks to George) and after a few ... read more

Before we had started travelling we decided we wanted to do some more volunteering somewhere along the way...and since India was a country you can get a visa for a good period of time...we decided it would be a nice way to learn a bit about the sub continent. So Jean had mates Jago and Cassie who volunteered at a nice childrens home in the south of India a few years ago so we had contacted them and organised to spend a few weeks volunteering with them too! After spending about 60 hours on the train over the past 4 days in the train to get from the north of india to the south...we finally arrived at tenkasi railway station which is about 30 minutes from the village where the childrens home is. We were lucky ... read more

Entering India after Pakistan was a strange but exciting feeling as it felt like we had been in Pakistan for a long time (although it was only 3 weeks). We crossed the border on foot and passed the big stands which usually hold crowds of people who come and watch the famous Wagah border closing ceremony...where the police of both Pakistan and India perform outlandish and entertaining ceremony to close the border at the end of each day (so we heard...we never actually saw this). Before the border you can see the fence which India built to seperate the 2 countries! After having our details recorded in a book on the border we headed up the road towards immigration to fill out a form and be stamped into India! From the first border town we caught ... read more

Pakistan...well what an interesting and amazing place to spend a few weeks! If you listen to most mass media...Pakistan is a place of the Taliban, extreme Islam and constant suicide bombimgs. For us travelling through...we knew we had to spend some time in the country to apply for my Indian visa but we were unsure what to make of the security situation and basically wanted to play by ear and see how we felt before we decided to spend some time here or head straight to India. So the country has some problems...but what country doesn't! Firstly when 80% of the budget is spent on military...that doesn't leave too much for infrustructure and services like health and education. In Lahore the 2nd most populous city in the country the condition of one of the main access ... read more

Now we are in the Islamic Republic of Iran...and absolutely out of europe and into a whole new world! As like most countries i haven't been to before...i didn't know what to expect from Iran...but just wanted approach it with an open mind to learn as much as possible! I had heard Iran was a beautiful country with very kind people! but also knew this was a country where the rights of men and women are far from being equal and I would have to wear a scarf to cover my hair. Now most the news we get in the media about Iran tends to be about nuclear testing, human rights abuses and also protests from the recent elections! so I was excited and about travelling through Iran and also facinated about the people and ... read more

After braving and almost getting used to the freezing and minus temperatures in France and England...we were really happy to land in Istanbul and be told it was 14degrees! Back to Istanbul, we stayed the night and then checked out the underground cisterns and then took the ferry to the golden horn and had tea at Pierre Lotti's house...before getting the night train to Ankara! It was super nice to travel in a sleeper train for the overnight trip instead of the bus and we arrived in Ankara and then headed straight to the Indian embassy to apply for my visa for India...our only reason for stopping in Ankara! After waiting in line and being searched before entering the embassy...I was told that I would also need to provide a bank statement, flights in and ... read more
