Today was probably one of the best days of the trip so far. We spent the entire day visiting Mont St. Michel and the beach town of St. Malo. We left around 7:45am and took a 2 hour bus ride to Brittany, another country of the Loire Valley. The drive was beautiful...tons of land with cows, sheep, and the most beautiful flowers you could ever imagine. I still can't get over how gorgeous the hydrangeas are here! They look like huge pieces of cotton candy in every color you could imagine! Mont St. Michel is an ancient castle, well city I suppose, built on the island in between Brittany and Normandy. It's HUGE! It also dates back to the year 706...it was eerie standing in someplace that old. The architecture was amazing...even though I think I ... read more

Cancale cuddles. It was clear and sunny but the freshness of the May coastal breeze was undeniable. I was glad for the double fleece layers that I'd insisted on bringing with us and was cursing the fact that I couldn't find my hat. The first view of the sea was sublime. We had to drive down a small winding road which descended towards the beach. On the left hand side were houses and on the right some parking places. Surprisingly, of the twenty or so parking places, most were empty. We found a good spot, which inevitably involved some reversing and checking for possible 'getting-out' problems, and walked down the slippery road towards the sand. It reminded me of the little fishing villages that are redundant in the Southwest of the UK. Lots of little Grandpa ... read more

I took the train from Paris out to Brittany. I spent a few days in Dinan, where two hours would have sufficed, but it was a matter of hostel availability. Dinan was alright, I was just terribly bored and terribly allergic. The hostel took like and hour to walk to; lots of hills and field and forests. Nice scenery; but so doped up on double doses of allergy medicine q12h I couldn't wait to get out of there. Things improved in St. Malo and I wish I had been able to spend the time there instead. Nice seaside town with allergies much improved. I spent one day going to Mont St; Michel, which is better from afar, like in the pictures. Up close it is super crowded and you kind of trudge up with back ... read more

I just had the most fabulous week with my Mom here in France. Her long-anticipated vist to see me was even more fabulous than I had been hoping for, and we certainly managed to pack a lot of stuff into 8 days! She arrived early on Sunday, March 25, and stayed until noon on April 2nd. During that span, we spent 3 days in Bretagne (Brittany, in the north-west of France), stopped in Chartres on the way home to Paris to see the cathedral, spent 1 1/2 days in the Valley of the Loire, and even managed to run around Paris and thoroughly enjoy ourselves. So how did we do it? Basically, by sacrificing our sleep. My poor mother- I don't think we went to bed before 1am any single night! The very morning of ... read more

Arrived in St.Malo on the Friday morning by the Condor Ferry from Jersey and coming into the harbour we could see the walled town which never ceases to amaze me as it has a sort of Citadel appearance from the sea. We quickly made our way to the Campsite by Taxi which for a very reasonable price includes baord, swimming pool, bar, pool table, table tennis and many other activities. The mobile homes were actually quite good as well having plenty of space they had room for 4 people, shower, bathroom, cooker with plenty of cutlery. So the Friday day was basically an intense game of Ping Pong with Eddie and then hit the pool and water slides and after having done it sitting, forwards and backwards we headed off into St.Malo town for dinner and ... read more
