I’ve been meaning to start a blog ever since I got here. I could say there are many reasons for not having done it sooner, but the long and short of it is that I just never pushed myself enough to make it happen. Voilà…better late than never. France has been really cool so far. I’m living with an awesome family that includes a mother who teaches the Harp and traditional Breton music, a father who teaches Spanish at a high school (lycée en francais), a 10-year-old boy who’s beaten me at chess every time (he’s won a few tournaments), and the most energetic 5-year-old girl I’ve ever met. They don’t speak English at all, so I’m forced to speak French at all times with them. The city of Rennes, at least in terms of weather, ... read more

Beaucoup de Aventures Salut! Ca va? It has been a while since I have posted, but this time I have so many new adventures to share. I have been very busy lately with trips, school, and life. I am going to tell you about everything that I have done to the smallest detail. So, after reading this blog and looking at the pictures I know that all of you will want to come and visit me. J'espere!!! Saint Malo As most of you know and for those of you who don't I visited the beach on Saturday. Seven of the foreign students and I packed our bags, bought a bus ticket, and headed to Saint Malo for the day. We did not know what kind of adventures or fun that was coming our way. History of ... read more

Adventuring Out Bonjour! It has been a while since I have written, but as you know I have so much going on. Especially from looking at the blog I have posted. On Saturday January 26, 2008 the exchange students at Rennes 2 went to Munt Saint Michel. It is monestary and is surrounded by a bay. It is just absolutely gorgeous. Mt. St. Micheal is just a place that you need to see. It has so many steps there that are steep and you have to climb. When you enter you go throught a village that is very cute. It has all these shops, creperies, and restaurants. The walk through the town is quite steep. Also, the fun thing is that there are several cut throughs that are so narrow. My friends and I ended up ... read more

I have always wanted to travel to Brittany, after hearing lots about the region and meeting friendly Bretons in New Zealand. They seem to get around, the Bretons. Luckily our trip coincided with a friend from London - Nico’s trip to Brittany, so we decided to start off in Lorient, Nico’s home town. His mum was nice enough to let us camp in her garden, saving us some money staying at a campsite. Our trip there on the SNCF, first time in a ‘couchette’, was an overnight train from Lyon to Lorient, which must have circled the whole of France to get there. The couchettes are for sleeping, and nothing else, so no space to sit around or have a coffee and defiantly no hanky panky!! We were squashed into a tiny room of 6 small ... read more

I had my first cinema class today and the professor is excellent. He's very laid back (he should be as he has 2 hours to just analyze short segments of films) and likes to make jokes. There are only a handful of students in class from countries like Colombia, Japan, China, USA, and Mexico. I actually made the acquaintance of a Chinese student whose English name was Robin. He's been in France for about a year now. After class, I went for my rendez-vous with Monsieur Ringer to discuss what classes I was taking etc. I also made the big decision that I had been hesitating over to teach english to french kids. I'm proud of my choice but I know it will take dedication and organization on my part, which I'm not exactly good at. ... read more

So this is my first post in my newly established travel blog! I thought it would be a good idea since I'm doing and learning so many new things every day that this is a perfect way to document those things - and also to put up all the pictures that I take. Today in class we listened to French singers - Edith Piaf, Jaques Brel, Georges Bressons and then we had a little 2 hour wine tasting session. Classes start tomorrow at Rennes 2 - Villejean University. I have to wake up early in order to arrive there at 8am to see what my class schedule will be like. I've signed up for the mandatory courses and for my electives I chose 19th+20th Century history and introduction to cinema. Also, I'm considering teaching kids english...but ... read more

Yesterday I arrived by train into Rennes. I was quickly swept up by my distributor and we headed off to her offices. We had a good meeting and then we went to see some sights and the sea. We visited a pirate city called Saint-Malo. It is walled in and is quite beatiful. I have a few photos of myself and I look a little wore out but I have a slight cold and was on a train for 5 hours. After this little excursion she returned me to my hotel and I was left to fend for myself for dinner. It was a already 8pm and I really think she should have fed me. What are you going to do? Today I caught a plane and I am staying in Lyndhurst, Great Britain. I ... read more

I got ahead of myself and was uploading pictures when I "published" the wrong blog entry so I guess you can view the nice pictures of France and wait until I enter the story later. That is why I should have gone to bed after I send the last blog...enjoy! Now that you have seen all of the pictures, I will add some information for those of you that want to read. Once I arrived in Paris, I walked to another terminal where I could catch the bullet train to Rennes, but had about two hours to wait, which was nice so I did not have to rush. The high speed train is same type that broke the land speed records a month or so ago. It was not the same train, but it was ... read more

The following is an excerpt from a letter written to one of the best friends a girl could ever ask for. I've debated for days the decision to deposit this depressing dispatch into the depths of this domain. I feel it is my duty, but undeniably only because there is a deficiency of dramatic developments in my life. Ahem, Chere Merdith, oh, so indeed it is my turn? i was waiting for an actual letter!! i thought this was a quick pre-letter, more along the lines of, 'this is a quick pre-letter to the letter i'm going to write you when i have more time. but i'm thinking about you!' than 'this is a full-on letter. write me back asap!' our telepathic connection is apparently falty across the ocean. no doubt the magnetism of the earth ... read more
