Alun p... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! I said some quick goodbyes to Katrina this morning before I left for the bus station. It was early enough that she wasn't really awake so it was a very short farewell. The bus trip went well and I arrived in Tartu after roughly four hours and I was greeted at the bus station by my new host Kristiina. Just like with some of my previous hosts she speaks Swedish and actually works for a Swedish company helping with the time management for our regional service travels so I said that she has probably talked to my father at some point though because he used to work in service travels before his retirement. Even though she spoke Swedish we actually stuck to speaking English the whole time, probably just felt more naturally ... read more

Tartu in eastern Estonia 15 August 2014 We arrived in Tartu at about 7.00pm, found a park next to a park and cooked dinner at 'home'. The next morning was overcast and jumper weather but by about mid-morning the sun was out. We learned that Tartu is the second largest city in Estonia with a population of 100,000. It is a Hanseatic city and a university town. Dating back to 1030, it is the oldest city in Estonia. We decided to do a self-guided walk around the town as we had a booklet which was very helpful on describing the features of the town. We discovered that the town was full of monuments and sculptures. We loved the Botanical Gardens, the Town Hall Square and the ruins of the Cathedral. I have put detailed captions on ... read more

Tartu is a university town. We spent a pleasant couple of hours on a self-guided walking tour, and another couple of hours in the observatory which houses one point on the Struve Geodetic Arc which extends from the Arctic Ocean to the Black Sea. This arc was part of a segment measured during 1816-1852 to provide a means of establishing the exact size and shape of the earth. The upper portion of the observation tower can be winched around so that the observation opening for the telescope can be oriented 360 degrees. Unfortunately, they don't open it up at this time of the year because it doesn't get dark enough at night. The university art museum was disappointing as it consisted of a small number of plaster casts of classical statues, a few unimpressive sketches by ... read more

We should have known better when we saw that the restaurant had only one other customer! Having spent a cold, wet evening in Cesis, and an equally cold and drizzly morning walking round a lovely park and the old and new Cesis castles (the new one now being a museum), we drove on to Estonia, passing the deserted Latvia/Estonia border control buildings with no one to care who we were or where we were going. We saw several black and white storks alongside the main road and, after mile upon mile of Latvian forests and grassland, more of the fields now contained crops. It was warm and sunny when we reached Tartu and we found a much nicer room for two nights than we'd had the previous night, which is why we were lulled into thinking ... read more

July 3rd and its my birthday! Time for 3 Skype calls to C&M plus Erin and Leigh.Such is the wonders of modern technology we are never far from home even on ones birthday. Despite the fact that it hardly got dark last night we did have a good nights sleep in the log cabin and we didn't have to prepare breakfast as it was included in the price of accommodation. So after the calls we wandrede the 300 odd metres over to the restaurant and enjoyed a delicious omelette and real good coffee. There was no toast at first but Gretchen asked and a couple of pieces each appeared along with a garlic infused butter which would have made an interesting spread had we had any jam to spread on the toast as well ! All the occupants ... read more

Arriving in a town on a Sunday, when there is a bit to see in it is not the best. Not here in Estonia anyway. All museums are shut on Mondays and Tuesdays and reopen on Wednesdays, usually at 11am. And so, I arrived in Tartu on a Sunday. Not the best day obviously but it does make for more imaginative planning for Monday and Tuesday. So yesterday I ran around Tartu trying to find these dotty orange cups they have here in hostel (B&B)Terviseks. They're lovely bone china, nothing fancy but ever so joyful to look at and feel so nice in the hand. Apparently this is what every household had as they were manufactured somewhere in the Ukraine. Unfortunately, all the second hand shops I visited only had clothes. What else to do? Oh ... read more

After a rather short but very nice vistit to my family in law, i was headed back to Bergen Norway on 26th of December from Tartu. Getting to the busstation to go to Tallin to my flight 15 minutes before departure left me in a bad situation..handing over the luggage to the busdriver, he asks for a ticket..cant i buy from you i asked, as i did when i arrived ?. No, no..full he says, and ticket..all is chaos around the bus as people arrive all the time and he can find no more room for luggage. I run into the busstation, and find a open ticketoffice, im telling the nice lady where i want to go..and she speaks back in Estonian..she sees that im lost, so she turns her monitor and points @ next possible ... read more
