Dear All Hello again, for my third and final update on my lovely little winter trip to Denmark. I had enjoyed two full days of sightseeing until this point, around Copenhagen first, and then two royal castles situated in Hillerød and Helsingør in northern Zealand. For my final full day, I wanted to explore more of the natural beauty of this part of the world, and planned a visit which would take in both coast and forest, and after ending up with some additional time towards the end of the day, I also managed to fit in a lake. Whilst so far I had visited some quite famous tourist sights of Denmark, this final day enabled me to really get off-the-beaten track, and just explore what was around me in the natural north of Zealand. It ... read more

Dear All Greetings once more, my second of three blog entries on my lovely little trip to Denmark, reporting this time on my second full day there, on the Tuesday. After a full day exploring the tourist sights of Copenhagen, along with many other international tourists, I felt that on my second day I wanted to explore more provincial tourist attractions, hopefully more off-the-beaten track. The tourist crowds in Copenhagen weren’t overwhelming, though I’m sure they are in the summer, but I always feel I want to explore the “real” country when I visit a place. On my second day I feel I did just that – I had planned to spend the morning in Hillerød visiting its amazing Frederiksborg Slot, and then head up to Helsingør in the afternoon, to visit its stunning Kronborg Slot, ... read more

Dear All Greetings from London – I have just returned from a lovely four-day trip to Denmark, and plan to write up my adventures there in three blog entries over the coming weeks. I have taken a cue from some of my fellow travel bloggers on here, in not always writing whilst on the road, as this seems to take valuable time away from the travels! I plan to continue to write whilst on the road during my longer summer trips though. So Denmark – country number 79!! And as per the TCC country/territory count, 92 – slowly edging my way out of “Provisional” to “Full Member” status – yay! :D It also continues my current aim to fit in a few smaller trips in between my big summer trip, as well as my desire upon ... read more

We docked at breakfast time - moored just up the road from the little princess. After brekky we went ashore for our Fairytale Castles and Countryside shore excursion. We had a beautiful drive up the coast to Kronborg Castle. This is the castle used as a setting by Shakespeare in Hamlet. From the ramparts we could see Sweden, and all of the shipping traffic. We were only able to walk around the outside of this castle, but it was beautiful - they have an annual Shakespear festival. After that visit we drove on to Frederiksborg Castle which was made into a Museum of National History In 1878. It included Mary’s wedding dress from when she and crown Prince Frederick were married. When the tour guide asked where we were from and we said Australia, he said ... read more

We began our second full day in Copenhagen just as begun our first - on the hop on - hop off bus which we caught to the main train station and then transferred to the green line which took us past the Copenhagen Zoo and the Carlsberg Brewery. We were not sure why you would spend your time here in Copenhagen at a Brewery but for some people I guess this wold be the highlight of their visit to Copenhagen. After returning to the train station, we caught the red line to Christiania which is a commune type area established by hippies in 1971 white most of the buildings built by actual hippies. The area is built on public land around a river and public authorities have turned a blind eye to construction and habitation as ... read more

Our first full day in Copenhagen began with commencing our 72 hour “Red Bus“ ticket on the hop on - hop off bus which will be our mode of transport around Copenhagen over the next 3 days. To get the lay of the land, we undertook a complete circuit of the red line and its 23 stops to we could understand the best places to spend our time around. Copenhagen has many attractions but the number one place to visit on everyone’s top 10 list is Tivoli Gardens which is a 150 year old amusement park built in the centre of Copenhagen. Walt Disney visited Tivoli Gardens in 1951 and it is said that he modelled the Disneyland theme parks around Tivoli Gardens. While we didn’t indulge in the amusement rides, we had a great time ... read more

Today is just a day of travel as we move our holiday from Ireland to the Baltic Sea so our journey started at 5:00 am as we packed the remaining of our belongings, loaded the bags into the car and commenced the 3 hour drive to Dublin Airport on the N8, N7 and M50. We allowed an hour and a half to drop off the rental car given the time it took to pick it up but dropping a car off at Dublin airport is much more efficient than picking one up and within 15 minutes, we were on the shuttle bus toward terminal almost 3 hours before our flight. We left Dublin on a dreary overcast day but arrived in Copenhagen to warm bright sunshine. After collecting or baggage, we caught the train directly to ... read more

18th July Copenhagen Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen, approached on another beautiful sunny summers day. As usual with late morning arrivals the buses are full and queues are the order of the day. As we berthed only a 20 minute stroll into the centre it was the way to see some of this easy going bonhomie of this ‘wonderful’ city. Copenhagen was the adopted home of Hans Christian Anderson, commemorated by the statue of the Little Mermaid, a bronze statue dated 1913 by a Danish artist Edvard Eriksen. It is the most photographed lady in Copenhagen, situated on the Langeline Promenade only 200 metres from where we were berthed, chances of us getting a photo were slim on our way out as the world and his dog (well tourists, mainly Japanese) were crawling (literally) all over her. Hans ... read more

Here we are at the end of our wide ranging travels in Europe. Tomorrow we set off for NZ and winter. Goodbye to the amazing warm weather we have experienced since arriving in Florence two months ago, apart from a few days when we needed jackets. Our final day in Copenhagen was spent wandering the city, down Stroget, the walking street where most of the shops are, to the high end area with Georg Jensen and the Royal Copenhagen shop. Interesting to have a browse. We came back via the Round Tower, one of the first observatories, and the food market at Norreport. Saturday and Sunday were full on days. We didn’t intend to come to Copenhagen for the art but now we are here Ian found these two extensive modern art galleries, one north of ... read more

Monday. Another day on the road for us, as we were about to set off Les saw a motorbike pass with a large flag attached to it followed by 27 other bikes, quite a convoy! The road takes us through pine clad mountains with lakes in the valley bottoms which open up into mountain pastures. We passed through .Seljord. Where there are many legends about trolls living in the mountains, Selma the serpent is said to live in the lake here, first spotted in 1745, she is said to have two heads and travel at 25 knots on the water's surface. Also one of my favourite children's stories was written here, The Three Billy Goats Gruff. To break our journey we had a planned stop at Heddal Stave Church, the largest of the 28 stave churches ... read more
