Today we’re taking a trip up the Zealand coast to Helsingør, home of Kromberg castle, setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet. First, we need to purchase 24 hour travel cards from the ticket machine. The old man requests 2 tickets plus a receipt and the machine issues 2 cards; one ticket and one ticket with a receipt. However, he is convinced he has been issued with one ticket and one receipt. He calls the helpline to complain that he has paid for 2 tickets and only received one. Eventually, a lady who had been waiting patiently in the queue steps in and clears up the confusion. Once we have ascertained that we do, in fact, have 2 tickets, we catch a train to Helsingør and walk along the harbour. There are some nice sculptures, including a thought provoking ... read more

Early yesterday morning we accompanied our guest, Cindy, to the Copenhagen airport via the metro, and everything went according to plan...until it didn't. After we said our good-byes, and not long after Cindy proceeded through the security checkpoint, we received an e-mail message from her with the startling news that she had left her cell phone back in our apartment! Apparently a kind-hearted soul had allowed her to use his mobile phone to relay the news to us, and to her husband (John) back in Florida. But all's well that ends well, as today Dee and I were able to make arrangements with a Fedex agent to send the phone to the states, hopefully to be back in its owner's hands in a few days. After seeing Cindy off at the airport, we spent the rest ... read more

Hallelujah! The weather gods have finally smiled on Copenhagen, as today was nearly picture perfect. By late morning, there was nothing but blue skies and sunshine coming our way. Needless to say, we were all ecstatic that spring had sprung, and the girls celebrated their first Happy Hour on the balcony since Cindy arrived a week ago. We enjoyed a delicious lunch at a place called Cafe Wilder (across the street from the Sankt Annae 8 Cafe), with the girls ordering the traditional Danish open-faced sandwiches (Smørrebrød), while I tried moules frites (mussels and fries). Sadly, this is Cindy's last day with us. Tomorrow morning she flies back to Orlando (via London), and we wanted to do something special as a going away present, so we decided to spend her last afternoon in Copenhagen's Assistens cemetery! ... read more

This morning we were pleasantly surprised to discover that the weather forecast for overcast skies and intermittent rain was off the mark. Although cool and a little breezy, we would enjoy some sunshine throughout most of the afternoon as we toured the Rosenborg Castle and nearby gardens. We managed to get a slightly earlier start than usual, walking to the Christianshavn metro station at 11:00 AM, and arriving at Nørreport station shortly thereafter. From this station, we had about a 20-minute hike before reaching the castle grounds. Rosenborg Castle (Danish: Rosenborg Slot) is a Renaissance castle that was originally built as a pleasure palace in the early 1600s, and is an example of King Christian IV's many architectural projects during his long, 59-year reign between 1588-1648. He is remembered as one of the most popular, ambitious, ... read more

The weather here in Copenhagen, which remains chilly and breezy, continues to be a thorn in our sides. Yesterday morning the temperature was a frigid 39 degrees when we awakened, and barely crept up to the 50-degree-mark by late in the afternoon. The sun plays hide-and-go-seek most of the time, and a few occasional light showers seem to come out of nowhere, making traveling by foot quite a challenge for three warm-blooded Floridians. So we stayed put most of the day, venturing out only for lunch, and then for a brief visit to the Church of Our Savior a block down the street from our apartment. This unique church, the upper portion of which is visible from our rear windows, is a baroque church most famous for its helix spire with an external winding staircase that ... read more

Today is our first sea day and, boo, we lost Barbara already. It had been fairly calm waters leaving southampton but now that we are heading toward the Baltics, it is getting a little more on the choppy. Dave and I burst into Gary and Barb's room this morning and there she was looking like a little casper the ghost. Despite our attempts to convince her to let us take her to the docs for an injection, she would not get up and so we have now left her and come down to crooners for the first bloody mary of the day. Extra Spicy!! Dave and I have also already enjoyed some time in the thermal spa, a suite perk, it was really nice and relaxing....well it was up until the point that an obnoxiously loud ... read more

All of us were up and about by 6:00 AM on this chilly Sunday morning (upper 30s at daybreak), when Chef Dee surprised us with eggs Benedict for breakfast! While enjoying this treat, we discussed a plan of attack for today, and settled on a visit to the famous Tivoli gardens and amusement park. The walking distance to the park from our apartment looked to be about a mile, so we decided to take a stab at riding a bus. We walked up the street to the nearby metro station around 12:30 PM, and jumped aboard the 9A bus, only to be greeted by a gruff female driver who was obviously annoyed at having to sell us tickets and collect the money (most riders use machine scannable passes). She proceeded to issue terse commands, like a ... read more

Just when we thought the weather in Copenhagen could not get much worse, we awoke early this morning to a frosty 35-degrees, with a few SNOW showers! Cindy and Dee were delighted at the white flakes swirling around, but thankfully the winter wonderland display was short-lived. In fact, by later in the day, we enjoyed mostly sunny skies with mid-50s for temperatures. Talk about a dramatic turnaround! Since the weather forecast called for clearing skies in the afternoon, we decided to take a canal cruise for an overview of the sights we may want to visit in the coming days. So shortly after noon we bundled up, and then walked to the nearby Sankt Annae cafe, where Dee and I had eaten a few days ago. We thought Cindy would enjoy the food and laid-back atmosphere ... read more

The weather has been downright miserable, at least by our standards, since our arrival in Copenhagen. Although we can tolerate the cooler temperatures (40s and 50s), it's been the blustery wind conditions that make walking--even short distances--very uncomfortable. The evening before last, when a frontal system moved through the area, the winds howled at upwards of 40/mph, rattling the windows throughout the night. As a result, our sightseeing plans have suffered a serious setback. However, we did make an outing of sorts this morning, when Dee and I rode the metro from the nearby Christianshavn station to the airport to greet our good friend Cindy at the arrivals area. Cindy flew from Orlando, Florida (via London Gatwick) to spend a week with us here in Copenhagen, and it was great to welcome her after a typically ... read more

Yesterday morning we departed Heidelberg for the hour-long drive to the Frankfurt Airport, where we boarded a Lufthansa A320 at 1:00 PM for our flight to Copenhagen. Travel days are always a bit nerve racking, but it was pretty much smooth sailing today, as check-in, security and boarding procedures were organized with typical German efficiency. We even had enough time before our flight to grab a bite (and some Pilsner beer) at one of the snack bars. Despite the long walking distances from the airport terminal to the departure gates, Frankfurt earns high marks from us as far as major airports are concerned. Soon after landing in Copenhagen, we connected with our taxi driver, who delivered us to our rental apartment in the Christianshavn district of the city by around 3:00 PM. We received a very ... read more
