An interesting quiz question would be to name a famous Dane (apart from HKA). It turns out we all probably know a few and I stumbled on an interesting sight near to the centre of Copenhagen. My sight is the grave of the physicist Niels Bohr, but in the same cemetery (Assistens) HCA and the philosopher Soren Kierkegaard are also buried. After this we walk via the trendy centre (to embrace the full Scandi life J has herring for lunch) past the Rosenborg castle to the Little Mermaid then along the harbourside to the Amalienborg palace where the royal yacht is moored then on to Nyhavn for afternoon refreshments. We're using public transport here so then back across the city to the main railway station where we narrowly avoid catching our commuter train north instead of ... read more

Helsingor's major tourist attraction is the castle of the King of Denmark from Shakespear's Hamlet. As we drove north across the bridge to Malmo we are returning via the "old" route the ferry from Helsingborg to Helsingor. On the crossing we have an excellent view of the castle so skip a closer visit. Once safely back in Denmark we visit the Karen Blixen museum which is at her family house (and where she lived for many years) in the town of Rungstedlund about 30km north of Copenhagen. The museum has an interesting (for me as someone who has very limited knowledge of her life) exhibition, but the house is just as interesting as it has been kept in the same condition as when she lived there, and you are free to walk around most of the ... read more

A long awaited vacation to the cool Nordics was up on the cards and in the midst of a precocious Dallas summer we flew to London to catch a connecting flight to Copenhagen. It was 2 years since the pandemic and 2 weeks since Biden declared ease in flying restrictions but there was no ease transiting London Heathrow! Difficult staff at Security check and paranoid BA policies on carry on baggage made Americans the cool dudes by comparison! Denmark welcomed us with showers and a cool drizzle. There was a chill in the air and it was time to pull out the jackets! We took the metro from the airport towards our Airbnb on Stroget, the Champs-Elysee of Copenhagen and one of the world’s first ‘all pedestrian and biker only street' -- home to top brand ... read more

This is supposed to be a group of people who know what they are doing, well I can tell you this is not the case, even though most are retired and long standing motorhomers’. So Andrew and Joan had brought a rotary clothes dryer. So both mike and I set ours up really easily within 2 seconds. It is a Lakeland one (other suppliers are available) - but could we put Andrew’s and Joan’s up, not a bloody chance. We also got lots of other Carthago owners to help and once again how many carthago owners does it take to put a rotary dryer up, well all I can say it is not enough. We decide to go into Copenhagen which is a lovely city. We decide that we will buy a Copenhagen pass which gives ... read more

Well day 2 and 3 of being in Europe was firstly in the fantastic site in the Netherlands that I spoke about last time and now we are in Germany. Mind you it appears from the site we were in first we could have walked into Germany which would have been an experience that we could say we walked from the Netherlands to Germany, ha ha it sounds good and do not have to say it was less than a mile. So we follow the Sat Nav which you all know Mike loves and guess what less than 3 miles in and there is a road block and you guessed it the Sat Nav did not pick it up and wanted to take us around in circles. So guess what the trusty map came back with ... read more

Exploring the Traditional Fishing Village of Dragør Founded in the 12th century as a fishing village,it was used as a fishing port for centuries. It has a Dutch influence because the Danish king invited Dutch farmers to live in the area to supply food for the royal family in the 16th century. The Dutch were more agriculturally advanced than the Danish, and they actually introduced carrots to Denmark! It was a bit misty to see the bridge connecting Denmark to Sweden but Emma was able to show a picture on her phone. As we passed the fisherman’s shacks and the harbour we heard how the fishermen in Dragør helped save the Danish jews during the WWII. One of the small fishing boats used has been restored and sits in the harbour as a permanent memory. The ... read more

http://www.heygo.com 19th March - Copenhagen I took this trip back in January so it was nice to take the boat trip again with the sun shining. The yellow harbour buses take you up and down the harbour on a regular bus ticket. They are running on electricity, a “green” journey through the city and see Copenhagen from the waterside. Not only are the Harbour buses an efficient means of public transportation in Copenhagen, but it’s also a big part of the city’s hard work of lowering its CO2 emissions. Actually, the Harbour buses are both NOx- and particle-neutral. Our trip lasted about 20 minutes and we disembarked at Nyhavn canal. The canal was built to connect Kongens Nytorv to the harbour and was long a haunt for sailors and writers, including Hans Christian Andersen. He wrote ... read more

To keep your mind off this terrible pandemic, here is some totally worthless facts (from Travel Trivia, MSN, and others) to fill your hard drive. Although several countries lay claim to the world’s oldest flag, the “Dannebrog” or “Danish cloth” holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s oldest flag in continuous use. King Christian IV made things official in 1625 with his War Articles for flying “the flag and Colours of Command in the Navy in Denmark,” but the Danish cloth had actually been in use long before that. Its first known depiction was in the 1370s in the Gelre Armorial (a medieval collection of coats of arms), and later it was used in war during the 16th century naval battles with Sweden. The Scottish Saltire is older and its history has been a subject ... read more

The Saga Hotel at the Colbjørnsengade is just five minutes walking from the Central Station of Copenhagen. It is not expensive and surrounded by restaurants. Moreover it comes with a copious breakfast. It is situated in the Vesterbro area, once a red district. And still there are prostitutes around, like the Thai restaurant we visited. You just have to go downstairs into the basement and you are welcomed by a flock of Thai girls. We came for the food, the red curry and the masaman curry, our favourites. The Saga Hotel is on walking distance from the main musea of Copenhagen. To come to the musea, you have to cross the train station, which has a nice hall full of shops and restaurants. At the other side is Tivoli, the playground for families, but now in ... read more
