Hello from sunny Guernsey! Today has been glorious weather, & Audrey & I have been pottering around St Peter Port - nice crab sandwich for lunch followed by 'the best apple strudel on the island' to quote the restaurant, yummy it was too! Well, our last day has arrived, & although we're going to be busy (playing for afternoon tea & a concert this evening), I'm hoping this blog will work this time. I've had 4 attempts to write this...ship's poota system is totally useless, I tried in an internet cafe & lost everything, so fingers crossed! I've bought Sam a small pressie from my travels, actually it's something we both really need - 'Cook Yourself Thin' cookery book from the TV series of the same name. Actually I've decided to do my own version - ... read more

Ah yes the island life.... how could you say no to beautiful beaches, castles and wonderful people!! Jersey island is a hdden paradise, off the beaten track in the english channel....Simon (the islander!) brought Larissa and I around this gem!! Visiting Castles, beautiful beaches and going out with his friends. A rarety for us prairie girls....he took us Razor Fishing!! Pack a container of salt, tide is low and the hunt is on!! The story goes,.... at low tide, going out on the sand, find a hole that's slightly keyhole shaped and pore in the salt...this tricks the razor fish to think the tide is back and they come up from the sand...at that time you look past the slimmy head and grab him by the shell!!! Success four times over, woohoo!!! Now with a little ... read more

Well the big kangaroo landed in Frankfurt at 5am on Monday the 24th of July and I waved a big goodbye to my last link to Aussie for a while. I trekked with all of my stuff (and yes I had a lot) to the train station to do the five-hour train trip to Antwerp in Belgium to meet Cara. The train ride went pretty quickly with three train changes on the way to keep me on my toes (literally with all of my stuff). I realised that a big Aussie smile got you a long way with many nice Germans and Belgians offering to help me carry my big Hobie bag (as there was no lifts in the stations - mental note for next time). I also felt a bit nostalgic as the train whirled ... read more

10am “You’re lucky you know”. “How’s that?” I ask as I roll up my sleeve. “Only last week I was at a seminar on resuscitation techniques”, he says in a matter of fact way. As I consider this, he withdraws the needle from the second container and eyeballs the contents, rocking it back and forth slowly, a perplexed look on his grey face. I’m sure I just catch “…stuff never mixes properly” as he mutters under his breath. My concern manifests itself as a nervous “yeah right” laugh. He pauses as he leans in; needle held like he’s about to stub out a cigar on my cowering deltoid. “Two breaths to one compression…? Or is it the other way round?” He looks up at the ceiling and mimics chest compressions with his free hand… “Don’t worry. ... read more

You may have noticed that our previous blogs have been somewhat retrospective in their nature. I would like you to imagine that this is due to the busy lifestyle that we lead here in Jersey preventing us from finding the time to sit in front of the screen and put fingers to keyboard. Alas, I must confess that sadly the truth is two parts lethargy to one part apathy. However, this entry is different to its predecessors. I concede that it does share many common elements with the others - it is wall to wall waffle, it has absolutely nothing to do with Jersey, and it has nothing to do with travel. The perfect ingredients for a travelblog I hear you grumble. I should correct myself, because while its not about travel in a physical A ... read more

Time on Jersey falls away like change through the hole in my jeans pocket. It’s easy to forget that its passing until you look back and see all the money you’ve lost. In this leg shaking, coin scattering year, April and May are the feeling you get as you stand making small chat with your not-altogether-unattractive neighbour and receive that sudden, cold, momentarily baffling (and yet strangely intriguing…) feeling that accompanies your coins fall into the trouser leg abyss. Concentrating on maintaining a grasp on the conversation whilst guiding said coin to the sanctity of ones shoe with a combination of cunningly disguised leg shakes and trouser hoists can be tricky, but I assure you, it can be successfully achieved. The key is not to attempt aforementioned manoeuvre with one’s hands in ones pockets. This kind ... read more
