Geo: 51.2687, 4.46397Another bad sleep - it's too hot here! Also, the shower sucks in the hostel - the angle of the shower head doesn't allow water to shoot out very far. So you need to snug up against the wall but even that's difficult because the big hot/cold knob assembly prevents you from getting close enough. I had only one bunkmate last night - some guy from Denmark that is in Amsterdam for an interview. He's really excited about it because he'd love to live here (who could blame him?). It's some job involving traveling 2-3 weeks at a time and then returning to Amsterdam for a week. I briefly considered killing him and taking his place - it sounds ideal! I forgot to ask him what company and type of job it was - ... read more

Heading out to the ticket box, we picked up our purple ticket, waved it around to make sure the man on the mic would call us when our bus arrived, and lined up the door egger to get the best seats.. Sound like a high school excursion? You have no idea!! Stepping up, we were asked what language we spoke (the tour guide on the Tulip Garden’s tour would repeat herself in 6 languages!) Mum responded Australian! “Oh Crikey, will English do?” said the tour guide!? Spot on! I think we won him over right there and then, and we were quite impressed that with such a vocabulary, Crickey was still on his tongue! Aside from the young group of American’s going to bed for the first time that night on the bus, we were ... read more

Antwerp was a rewarding day trip from Brussels. It is only about half an hour away by train, but Antwerp is not nearly as touristy as Brussels or Brugge and has just as much life and energy as either city. It had the standard Belgian city layout of pretty town square with Christmas market and ice skating rink. However the city had a vibrance to it that I didn't feel in the other Belgian cities we visited. There were lots of interesting restaurants and other shops in which to browse. I was sorry that the shops closed so early because the main shopping strip was both picturesque and full of great deals. We thoroughly enjoyed our day wandering the streets and absorbing the atmosphere, even if that atmosphere was ridiculously cold and wet.... read more

My oh my, it’s been a long time. In fact, it’s been such a long time, that we’re back two where we were several blogs ago. We’re in Antwerp, Belgium again, with the ever generous and helpful Lotte and Stu. I’m going to very briefly let you know where we’ve been and a few highlights since we last caught up: Belgium (Antwerp, about one week): Hung out with Lotte, Stu, Lotte’s brother Bram and his girlfriend Tessa, Bram’s best friend almost brother Danny, and a few other people, and truly felt like we were part of a real-life episode of Friends. There’s lots of dropping by for tea and coffee and a visit, and you never have to call in advance if you don’t want to. Bike riding is a very common means of getting around, ... read more

We stayed at this absolutely wonderful hostel (AB Hostel). Finally, a small friendly place that was very clean. Most of us there ended up in the living area chatting away at night. Even the owners hung out with us. It rained the afternoon we arrived so we took refuge in the mall. Amie was mysteriously drawn to the colouring books and pencil crayons...again...then she realized how silly it may look to see a backpacker contently colouring between the lines while waiting for the train or in the lobby of a hostel :D The next day (our full day there) it was the 50th anniversary of the Tall Ship Festival where they race around Europe and end here in Antwerp. there were so many huge wooden ships with three tall mast. It was a weekend of many ... read more

From the airport in Amsterdam we were taken by bus to our hotel in a small town in Holland, whose name I have forgotten. The landscape was flat but very green, pastoral, calming and very pleasant. Homes were rural and well kept and many dairy cows were seen. The clutter and industrial unsightliness ones sees while traveling in the States was noticeably absent in almost all of Europe. The only part of my European trip where I saw it, surprisely was in Italy, on the way to Venice. We were given the day just to rest, which was welcomed news to me, as I traveled all the way from Hawaii, whereas the others in the group came from various states on the Mainland. First surprise for me was the shower. It was barely larger than a ... read more

I Loved Belgium but this part of my journey cannot be fully documented due to my choice of accomodation. I stayed with a friend and his family and my friend reads my journals and well... I dont want to be too honest because I certainly have no intention of offending him or his family or even the extended people who I met during my stay. Ill have to tread very carefully and try very hard to be entertaining but if I have nothing to complain about it's usually too boring. I guess time will tell and my readers (including my Belgian host) will be the judge. So let me begin this tale, one which spans 12 days, 12 of the best days of my trip so far, to be exact. The trip spans an early exit ... read more
