Part of the great British experience includes donning frock and hat and doing the "My Fair Lady" at the Ascot races (Mum, please don't sing). With this inspiration, some work colleagues and I packed ourselves on a train full of well-dressed yobs to head to the splendour and pomp of Ascot. (Men in top hats shouldn't be allowed to drink beer. Spoils the whole look.) There was pomp and royalty a-plenty, for sure. The Queen was there with Prince P, promenading along the home straight. I am not sure that the Queen's eyesight was good enough to appreciate the impressive waving technique that we had all been practising, however we all enjoyed ourselves. There was also plenty of miserable cold London rain. Summer has not yet come to London and the weather didn't take a ... read more

England's holidays are not well spaced. First there is Easter in April followed by two bank three day weekends in May with a long public holiday drought until August. But, making the most of the two bank holiday long weekends, we booked two "canal" breaks - Amsterdam and Venice. First, Amsterdam. Any city with water always appeals, but I think it would be difficult to make Amsterdam look ugly. Even the graffitti we found in an alleyway was quite arty and visually appealing. Similarly, the seediness of the red light district is not really captured in a night shot with the red lights reflected in the canal. We had a fantastic time in Amsterdam, cruising the canals, exploring the Van Gogh museum, eating plenty of Indonesian food, visiting Anne Frank's house and exploring the pretty ... read more

The Obi Wan Club

I usually associate Star Wars fans with spotty teenagers, balding middle aged men and other stereotypical geeks at giant convention centres in first world countries. Apparently, I'm wrong. The biggest Star Wars club seems to exist in Morocco, judging by the fraternity of Obi Wan we infiltrated deep in the Tangier medina. These fans are so dedicated that they wear Obi Wan couture 24/7. Admittedly the jellaba looks quite comfy and you could be wearing just about anything underneath and still get away with it in public. Still, the pointy hooded, brown-robed look seems less like traditional Moroccan dress and far more like rabid Star Wars fan attire. Although unsurprisingly the older Moroccan men who tend to wear the jellaba don't seem quite so spotty, balding or geeky. In fact, they look quite dignified sipping ... read more

Lots and lots of pretty arches

Although we were happy to spend another week stuffing ourselves with tapas underneath the orange blossoms in Seville, there was more Andalucian glory to explore a short day trip train ride away in Cordoba. Both Seville and Cordoba are overrun with tourists, however Seville somehow carries it off with class whereas Cordoba felt a little claustrophobic and a little cheap. Maybe it's because the old town in Cordoba is not as big as Seville's. The old town in Seville is also better laid out and more spacious - particularly the area around the cathedral. Yet the Cordoba cathedral is a marvel in itself. Lots and lots and lots of pretty arches. In case you feel that we have skimped on the arch photos, there are plenty more to send if you are an arch-itectural geek ... read more

Starry starry day

What better way to spend a sunny, warm Sunday in March than have a long lazy brunch, walk around Regent's Park and go check out some celebrities at Madam Tussauds. A very touristy thing to do, but still worthwhile. The last time I went I was at high school and Paul Keating was the prime minister. Now John Howard is there in all of his glory, along with many other celebs who have come to the forefront since the 90's. We all scared ourselves to death by daring to step inside the Chamber of Horrors (not recommended for heart patients or pregnant women), but enjoyed snuggling up to Robbie and boogying with Aishwarya.... read more

We love the fact that everywhere is so close to London, and we particularly love the Eurostar which will quickly and efficiently take you right into the heart of the city of love, Paris. All hail the Eurostar! It is amazing that you can be at work at 5:30pm on a Friday and a mere few hours later, find yourself in Gare du Nord, ready to break into the cancan. I have been to Paris once before, but it is by no means a chore to return to this magical city. Merely walking through the streets is enough to keep you entertained for days, but there are also a bucketload of amazing museums and galleries to awe and inspire. This visit we went to the Rodin Museum which I would highly recommend. I never realised just ... read more

Not once, but TWICE it snowed this winter to delight the Aussies (and some locals) in London. This time, there was much more snow, apparently more than has been seen in 30-40 years. Amazing! However, the inconvenience factor was much higher this time with everyone in my department arriving half an hour to an hour late for our morning meeting. Some people's journeys were doubled, others trebled due to the delays and disruptions caused by the snow. I still think it's pretty and quite phenomenal. It was a bit hazardous walking to work, but on the odd snow day I can definitely handle it.... read more

There are heaps of Aussies in London, but I never realised just how many until we saw Australia play Denmark at Loftus Road stadium. Those poor Danes, surrounded by a sea of green and gold, yelling and screaming and mexican waving like mad. The crowd was especially vocal when the referee seemed to keep favouring the Danes. We were missing many of our key Aussie players, but the Aussie team still did well against a strong Danish side. The only remaining question in my mind is whether the yobs in the shorts and singlets FROZE to death in the chilly English winter weather. (I was cold enough in boots, coat, gloves and scarf!)... read more

Living in West Hampstead since November, we felt quite negligent that we had not yet visited the famous Hampstead Heath. Although the suburb name is the same, it is not actually all that close to where we live (about a half hour bus ride). So, on a grey, overcast London Sunday we started traipsing across the Heath to see what all the fuss is about. My conclusion is that its nothing special, but might have more to offer in summer. When we visited it was a bit cold and grim. Lots of leaf-less trees and people heavily wrapped up, briskly walking their dogs. Next time we visit it may have to be warmer and include some form of cricket or football (plenty of wide open spaces).... read more

It snowed!

My eyes tend to take a while to wake up in the morning and my brain is certainly foggy until I jump into an invigorating shower. Both brain and eyes were struggling to make sense of what I saw out my window this morning - someone painted our neighbour's roof white overnight! What kind of prankster would do such a thing? No...the grass is white too....and the trees and everything - IT SNOWED! (She exclaimed, dancing around the flat.) Everyone told me that it snows in London only once in a blue moon, but blue moons should come around more often. The streets near our house were transformed. It was extremely pretty walking to the tube station, albeit a little more hazardous given the ice and snow all over the footpaths. Forget the inconvenience and delays, ... read more
