Upper Austria Travel Blogs

Background: Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945, Austria's status remained unclear for a decade. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. Following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 and Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995, some Austrians have called into question this neutrality. A prosperous, democratic country, Austria entered the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999.

After Switzerland we drove back to Germany and the Barvarian Alps. We went to the castle Neuschwanstein which looked amazing but you will have to take our word for it as our photos of it have since dissappeared into the world of 0s and 1s! We drove through Munich (stopping in at octoberfest for a beer) to Berchtesgaden, a little part of Germany on the border with Austria and once home to members of the Nazi party and the famous kehlsteinhaus "Eagles Nest". The scenery around there was amazing although Anna would like to mention that the bus ride up to [View Full Entry]

Steyr
This is an old building in the town of Steyr. The mural is beautiful.
So we took the train from Brussels to Frankfurt, then from there to Linz. We arrived in Linz on Saturday morning and Lukas was there to greet us. We then took another train to Molln, his hometown. His mother picked us up. We rested and had showers and such. Ham and cheese was for breakfast with bread. Then, we walked to the river and played cards. We had Tirolerknödel for lunch and it was good. Then there was cake and hot cocoa. We sang some Austrian and American songs with a guitar. Then, Lukas took us to Steyr which is a [View Full Entry]

I HATE RAINRAINRAINRAINRAINRAIN! ok, not the Korean singer nor the HK popstar... Was just planning to stay in Hallstatt, but since the weather was so bad, decided to go run through two lakes instead. Hallstatt, is this VERY TINY village that is listed in UNESCO....for its beauty? for, I got there, the train station is on the other side of the lake so I had to take a boat across. It was deserted! which was nice and peaceful but the rain really made the scenery not so nice... There are a few churches there, small and cute..haaa! The lake was beautiful, [View Full Entry]

30thSeptember - 1st October......Mauthausen via St Florian....... I went off the main R1 Danube Trail to visit the Augustinian Abbey at St Florian. St Florian was a Roman who converted to Christianity and was drowned in the Enns River. I know, I know....God works in mysterious ways. The church itself is full-on baroque from the 17C on a grand scale. Think Big. I found Mauthausen an interesting town and enjoyable to relax in. The old part is not large and looks pretty from the other side of the river where I was tucked in a deciduous forest. The trail swaps a [View Full Entry]

29th September......Linz with a population of 208,000 grew on me. While it has a lovely market square (with a flea market on the Sat morning I was there), it is an industrial city that belches out steam and pollution in the suburbs and across the Danube. You can taste it as you cycle out of the city. It is an alive city though and I enjoyed the large community art pieces on the riverbank. The Postlingberg, a twin spired baroque 18C church, sits atop a hill overlooking the town and river. At 537m it was a bit like cycling up to [View Full Entry]

THANK YOU to our friend Lily who recommended Hallstatt!!! We would have never known to stop here otherwise and I think it maybe the gem of our trip thus far!! Halstatt was absolutely BEAUTIFUL and a quaint/cute little town. It is surrounded by the Alps and lakes which makes for spectacular views. Our room that we found was beautiful and overlooked the hills and lake. The owner of our hotel had a display of all kinds of things found diving in the lakes (there are over 70 of them in the area)... apparently it was a dumping ground for the Naziś [View Full Entry]

Yesterday, we rented a car and drove down to Austria. Our destination was the little mountain village of Hallstatt. The rental car place didn't have our Opal, so we got stuck with a Mercedes E class, darn, haha! The first bit of driving on the autobahn was a little scary, but once I got the hang of it, it was a blast. It was like I was driving in a luxury car dealership. Porsche's, BMW's, Mercedes's, etc. all flying by at least 150km/hr (95~ mph), often much faster. The scenary was beautiful on the drive. Definitely 'Sound of Music' country. We [View Full Entry]

Linz

Cycle along north side of Danube. Decide to stay downtown in a hotel rather than a suburban campsite in order to go out for the evening in Linz, the largest city in Upper Austria. Go to a an Organ Coner in the Cathedral (Mariendom - JS Bach Schuebler-Chorale and Messiaen's L' Ascension) and to a Kneipe/Night Club. Do not have a Linzer Tarte here but do so later the following day while en route. [View Full Entry]

Approaching Linz
Linz Centre Ville

We were up early for our 4 hour train trip to Hallstatt. After an enormous breakfast (Tim) we hailed a taxi and headed to the station. A small error (Vicki) saw us miss the first train and had an hour delay for the next one. lol We travelled through some amazing country side mainly through the lakes district. There are many lakes in this area will small towns on their shores. Arriving at Hallstatt we had to take a short ferry ride to the town. What a sight it was from the ferry!!!! Everyone on the boat fell silent as [View Full Entry]
