Monday August, 20th Zugspitze was worth the trip, panoramic views of the Alps and surrounding area. There are a few steps to get there from the main train station. First, you take a train up to the base of the mountain to Lake Eibsee ( you have to change trains half way up), then you get on a cable car that holds 100 people (this recently opened last December) or you take another train that takes 45 mins to the Glacier below the top and then another cable car to the top. I chose the cable car because I read it was better and it only takes 10 minutes. The cable car goes basically straight up to the top of the mountain, 2900 meters, I am sure the pics do not do it justice, but it ... read more

I made it to Bad Goisern, where I am to spend the next three nights. I was so happy to get back to the mountains and less tourists. I was a little worried about finding my place with out the directions on my phone. My phone has been off and on having charging issues, as I said before, luckily it had enough charge to give me some quick directions. It is a very small town, it is a 10 minute walk from the train station to my Pension. What a cute and very quaint village, there are many fruit trees growing up the walls and in the yards, pears, apples, and prunes is what I am seeing the most of. A Pension, is like a B & B, it was less expensive than a hostel and ... read more

Today would be one of the “less good” days of the trip. It's not that we had a bad time. Au contraire. It was just that a couple of annoying issues happened along the way. In the end things righted themselves but they put a damper on our day. The day started off with the clanging of the bell in the tiny village church at sunrise. I apparently fell back asleep rather quickly because we didn't make it downstairs to breakfast until after 8:00. Christina and her had mom created a delightful breakfast for us with a great assortment of treats one might expect at a 4 star hotel. The best part of it was the fact that almost all of it came from their farm. Fresh butter, milk, yoghurt, honey, cheeses and homemade breads. I ... read more

Travelling again, a week ago I was in Krakow, Poland, on a tour with Grand Circle's "Old World Prague and the Blue Danube." Poland was an extension of the main trip, and several reasons compelled me to travel there. The first is simply that I had never been. Another reason is that my husband Bill thinks he is part Polish. And yet another reason, purely a terribly selfish first world desire, was to add to the growing list of countries I have visited, trying to eventually reach one hundred. Poland is number 65. Earlier on this tour our group had travelled to: Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, and the Czech Republic, visiting their capital cities along the way. I had been to Budapest, Hungary awhile ago, but returning to Budapest is never a hardship; it is a city ... read more

Thursday morning we had booked a driver to collect us from our apartments at 9.30am and take us to the airport, to catch a flight to Munich. On landing at Munich, we headed to our hire company only to find our VW Golf Diesel Hatch that we had booked was now unavailable due to our later arrival. I advised the Customer Service Assistant that we had confirmed our flight number online with their company, which she checked. Result. Upgrade to a virtually brand new Ford Focus Station Wagon, with just 353 klms on the clock. Great car to drive, very fuel efficient and plenty of room for our luggage. We headed for the Salzkammergut, which is a region of Austria stretching from the city of Salzburg eastwards along the Austrian Alpine Montains and the Northern Limestone ... read more

Europe » Austria » Upper Austria » Linz September 10th 2017

Today is our first actual stop in Austria. Looking out our window in Linz it appears to be a "city" rather than the small towns and villages to which we've become accustomed. Looking past the tall buildings I do see a much smaller onion shaped church spire, the tell tale sign that an old town exists and exactly where it is. But.......we are not here to visit Linz. No, no my friends, we are here to (drumroll here....) Hop on a bus and take a two hour trip back to Czech Republic.....Yep...hey no judgements here I just do what they tell me to do I'm here for the ride. (Pun intended). So as in all prior tours we get the signal to grab our "quiet boxes" and head to your appropriate bus. (I've been calling them ... read more

We left Salzburg by train, after a 7:00AM taxi ride which our hosts graciously arranged for us. The Salzburg train station is easy to find your way around in and we had purchased our tickets for Hallstatt there a few days earlier. The short train journey of less than 3 hours, including one quick train change around halfway, was through beautiful countryside and into the mountains dotted with small towns and the occasional castle. It was just starting to rain as we got off at the Hallstatt stop. There is a small building here in the wilderness at the side of the track and a path leads down to a small walk-on ferry to take you on a 15 minute ride across the lake to the town of Hallstatt. I remembered that our hotel was on ... read more
