Background: Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945, Austria's status remained unclear for a decade. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. Following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 and Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995, some Austrians have called into question this neutrality. A prosperous, democratic country, Austria entered the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999.

29th September......Linz with a population of 208,000 grew on me. While it has a lovely market square (with a flea market on the Sat morning I was there), it is an industrial city that belches out steam and pollution in the suburbs and across the Danube. You can taste it as you cycle out of the city. It is an alive city though and I enjoyed the large community art pieces on the riverbank. The Postlingberg, a twin spired baroque 18C church, sits atop a hill overlooking the town and river. At 537m it was a bit like cycling up to [View Full Entry]

THANK YOU to our friend Lily who recommended Hallstatt!!! We would have never known to stop here otherwise and I think it maybe the gem of our trip thus far!! Halstatt was absolutely BEAUTIFUL and a quaint/cute little town. It is surrounded by the Alps and lakes which makes for spectacular views. Our room that we found was beautiful and overlooked the hills and lake. The owner of our hotel had a display of all kinds of things found diving in the lakes (there are over 70 of them in the area)... apparently it was a dumping ground for the Naziś [View Full Entry]

Yesterday, we rented a car and drove down to Austria. Our destination was the little mountain village of Hallstatt. The rental car place didn't have our Opal, so we got stuck with a Mercedes E class, darn, haha! The first bit of driving on the autobahn was a little scary, but once I got the hang of it, it was a blast. It was like I was driving in a luxury car dealership. Porsche's, BMW's, Mercedes's, etc. all flying by at least 150km/hr (95~ mph), often much faster. The scenary was beautiful on the drive. Definitely 'Sound of Music' country. We [View Full Entry]

Cycle along north side of Danube. Decide to stay downtown in a hotel rather than a suburban campsite in order to go out for the evening in Linz, the largest city in Upper Austria. Go to a an Organ Coner in the Cathedral (Mariendom - JS Bach Schuebler-Chorale and Messiaen's L' Ascension) and to a Kneipe/Night Club. Do not have a Linzer Tarte here but do so later the following day while en route. [View Full Entry]

We were up early for our 4 hour train trip to Hallstatt. After an enormous breakfast (Tim) we hailed a taxi and headed to the station. A small error (Vicki) saw us miss the first train and had an hour delay for the next one. lol We travelled through some amazing country side mainly through the lakes district. There are many lakes in this area will small towns on their shores. Arriving at Hallstatt we had to take a short ferry ride to the town. What a sight it was from the ferry!!!! Everyone on the boat fell silent as [View Full Entry]

Saturday March 3, 2007 - On Saturday a few of us decided to go and visit a concentration camp in Austria. It is located in Mauthausen, Austria and was the largest camp within Austria. Getting to the camp was a bit of a struggle though. We woke up Saturday morning to catch the 7:30 bus to the Wiener Neustadt train station, then took a train to Vienna, then in Vienna took the subway to another train, where we finally got on a train headed towards Salzburg. We had to switch trains one more time before we finally arrived in the town [View Full Entry]

Hwaet, and we went to the fair hamlet of Hallstatt. And the adventure started early. Between running from Spar to Hütteldorf Bahnhof (if youve been to my place, thats the trainstation you gotta bus to) and then the confusion of why we shouldnt change trains. (ours said 'to salzburg' but they told us not to change to the Salzkammergut, which as it turned out was because they dismantled our train and part went to Salzburg and part went to the Salzkammergut). And... on the train, we had a lot of time on our hands, and I had 2 music majors and [View Full Entry]

Please note: the main photo server is being weird right now on this website, so if you can't see the pictures, try looking later on; they're working on fixing it. Anyway, on to the stories: Austria had their equivalent of the fourth of July on Thursday, Oct. 26th. I was still in Vienna at this point. Unfortunately, I had a 2-hour violin lesson (which was really good, don't get me wrong) during the celebrations, so didn't partake in the parade watching. But apparently some of my friends went and saw the president of Austria and the chancelor and a bunch of [View Full Entry]

Eric and Alana as we pack in. We are here getting onto the boat to Hallstatt, because Hallstatt Bahnhof is gegenüber a lake from the actual town.
This is the story of the Nature from Hallstatt. The principal players are myself, Eric, Alia and Alana. Perhaps there are pictures of Daniel and Tara as well, but I remember not if I have any pictures of them in the nature. I decided upon two albums for Hallstatt because one, it was 2 different places: a town and the nature, and two, I took entirely too many pictures, and a decent number turned out publishable for some reason, and also because Hallstatt and the surrounding area were some of the most beautiful places/things I have yet seen. Look for explaination [View Full Entry]
