This morning I woke up feeling all refreshed after my first real good night sleep of the trip so far. We made our way back over to Munich's city center this morning for a little more sightseeing and shopping. It was still sporadically raining when we arrived in the city. It was not even 10 o'clock and the area around the Marienplatz was already buzzing with activity. Today was the first day of Oktoberfest and we watched part of the parade march through the square. There were bands marching and wagons all decorated while being pulled by horses. People in the wagons were dressed in traditional German attire while drinking beer from their steins, and it was only 10am. One of the wagons was even playing La Bamba, how typically German. After we bored of ... read more

The rain caught up with us again today. Perfect for touring a castle. We were fortunate that we went luging yesterday as you can't do that in the rain. Castle touring however is an all weather activity. Neuschwenstein Castle was a fairtytale like structure rising from the top of a mountain. It was never completed as a functioning castle as King Ludwig (it's creator) died before it was completed. It was stormed by tourists within six weeks of his death in the 1800's and it has belonged to the tourists ever since. The bavarian folks work hard to bleed every Euro out of this disorganized lot of invaders but alas they have succumbed to the invasion and now welcome them with open arms and open tills. The castle itself although very beautiful is still a sad ... read more

The songs we have suuunnnng... for a thousand yeeeeearsssss... Austria. What a nice way to spend our lunch hour before going on to Italy. We went off searching for the famous Sachertorte - a really nice chocolate cake with a jam layer and real chocolate icing. It was yummy and really good with coffee. We went to the Schnaps store and we tried a whole bunch of Schnaps, all different fruity flavours, caramel, coffee. You can even pick your own bottle and get it filled with Schnaps of your choice, heat sealed and everything. Really pretty, makes for a good souvenir. I bought myself some loose tea, specific to the region of Tirol, which has some nice fruity and flowery notes to it. Time to go already, next stop - Venice, Italy. -Nelly and Maciek... read more

Wow, what a great day. It began waking up to sunshine streaming in the windows after a rainy day yesterday. Just laying and relaxing under these huge down quilts on crisp line dried sheets was a little bit of heaven. Breakfast included in the hotel was a mouthwatering buffet of Austrian delights. My day was already made when there were 4 slices of walnut bread that tasted just like my Grandma used to make for me every Christmas. I ate 2 of them and my boys ate the other two. We headed off to a luge run at one of the ski hills here in the area. It is a 4000 ft. concrete track that you ride a small sled down at typical break neck speeds. It was exhilarating to fly around the curves and zip ... read more

A lot has happened since my last update. We finished up in Berlin by picking up our car. Kelvin is having a great time on their Autobahn's. Our VW Passat we were supposed to rent turned into a very sporty SAAB station wagon. The minimum 130 km/hr speed limit was quite a new phenomenon and took a little while to get used to but once we did, whew we get around very quickly. The Lord also blessed us with a GPS navigation system on board. Considering our German isn't much better than when we started, this is a huge help. We figured out how to get it to speak English and now we feel very capable to go anywhere. From our apartment in Berlin we drove straight to the Potsdam Sansoucci Palace. We took a quick ... read more

Here in Innsbruck we got a Pension room with a t.v, thank god. I see London got the 2012 games over Paris, damn rights. We're pretty much resting up here. We've done the walk around and seen some sights. Innsbruck relics over its Habsbourg history, particularly Maximilian I. Innsbruck feels smaller than its 100,000 population. Its surrounded by gigantic mountains, so the views are great...only now its raining (which reminds me that yesterday the temperature was 9 in the evening, bloody unbearable for July)...So Ive got my Alps fix, and we're going to head to Venice...oh I almost forgot that our Innsbruck stop was made possible by me altering the dates on our eurail passes after the conductor never stamped it. 15th December 2005. While we didn't see very much at all in Innsbruck, the bus ride there had to be the most fun. BECAUSE. THE SOUND OF MUSIC, PEOPLE. When we entered Austria, the tour director played "the most famous song from Austria". Actually it's a song from Hollywood, set in Austria, and thus becomes the most famous song associated with Austria. Edelweiss. And thus, everybody on the bus started singing Edelweiss. AND THEN! CUCKOO! CUCKOO! It's the yodelling song! And thus the whole bus started going, ODELAYEEODELAYHEEEHOOO! High on a hill was a lonely goatherd ODELAYEEODELAYHEEEHOOO! Loud was the voice of the lonely goatherd ODELAYEEODELAYHEEEHOOO! Yes, the Australians are a funny bunch. I think on our way into Austria, we stopped at some gas station, and SNOW! There was SNOW! Fresh snow which was so ... read more

CAPODANNO in AUSTRIA -the land starts to swell, and pine covered hills slowly transform into snow capped mountains, and just when you think you’ve discovered beauty, the snow capped mountains are dwarfed by those even bigger, as the white summits emerge from behind, out we come from a tunnel (as the autostrada swerves in and out, barely clinging to the vertical sides of the alps) and immediately are greeted by layers upon layers of mountain peaks and ridges, some cliff like, some carpeted with pine trees, and the further north, the more white snow has fallen and resting heavy on the branches and rocky walls surrounding us, the air is crisp and clean. We are silent for an hour, as our 4 hour drive to Innsbruck is our introduction to the incredibly HUGE landscape of the ... read more
