So today we woke up from our hostel in Munich and decided to take a day trip to Austria. We had to check out of the hostel, but left our stuff in the lockers there and headed for the train station. We had full intentions of finding a lake somewhere in Austria and just lay and relax all day. So we got on our swimsuits, boarded a train at 9:30 am and headed for Kitzbuhel, right between Innsbruck and Salzburg, I heard it was kind of a resort town. After 2 hours we made it to our connecting station and jumped off only to find snow and weather that looked like it might rain. Here we are in our shorts and swimsuits (Munich was more promising than this was) so we bagged the lake idea, and ... read more

You´ve heard the names, 'Eddy the Eagle' (the english guy who tried to compete in the long ski jumps), 'Eddy the Eel' (the African swimmer who almost drowned himself in the Olympic 50m Freestyle event) and Caleb Ralph... Well, now you can add Stewhan from New Zealand to your list of athletes who were just there to give it a go... As a first-timer in a world cup climbing event, I was anticipating a challenge, but not sure where I stood in relation to that and the other competitors. It didn't take long to find out... There is a large divide between competitive climbing on artificial walls and climbing on rock. I have been exclusively focussed on the latter for a good part of two years, but to go to a world cup is an opportunity ... read more

Very eventful day. I will try my best to do this from memory, bit my totals will be way off. I woke up this morning as late as I could, but my eyes were not any better. They were watering all night long. Today is rafting, so I didn’t really bother getting too ready this morning. Breakfast was like everyday—just bread and jam. I discovered this morning that my Dramamine is gone. That’s bad! I couldn’t take any before our long ride out of Switzerland. I did get to sit in the front seat, but that meant the sun was in my eyes, which were already in enough pain. Switzerland was so perfect. I hope I can come back one day. It’s just so expensive, so it will have to be after I’m rich. I heard ... read more

We flew from Oslo to Salzburg, then took a train to Innsbruck (via Bavaria). The Alps are so close, feels like you can just touch them. We had difficulty finding our pension and after walking up a very steep hill with our packs and back down again we found that the pension has stopped dealing with our travel agent and had no booking for us. Again we had to spend a night in a dorm before going to our proper accommodation - hmmm, but that's what travelling is about. The Glokenhuis, where we stayed was built in 1550 and was used to make bells that were well renowned. The large exposed pine roofing timbers in our room were the original beams, and yes they still hurt just as much when we bumped our heads on them. ... read more

Innsbruck Innondation Ski caravanning!!! Love it! Camping but with a caravan in the snow. We had just got settled into our cosy camp and JP was happily making the tea when I discovered that there was a leak by the window which was letting melting snow enter and flood the bed! Luckily the discovery was made early enough for JP to go and tell the hippy camp man so that we could change caravans. The upside of the change was that I got to settle in a second time (which meant, incidently, another cup of tea) the downside was that JP had to get out the spade and dig a path in the snow to the caravan and to the main path! Maybe my man was made for Alaska after all.... read more

Xmas arrives Since much of the trip planning had turned around getting to Europe for a White Xmas, it was all pretty much of an anti-climax on the day. Good, but not great. There were too many little niggles with the way the tour company's organization kept going wrong to make this a really good day. Disappointing, really, given that it had so much more potential. Here are the photos for that day. The major activities were a horse-drawn carriage ride and a trip on the Gisella train to Zell am Zee. ... read more

18th October 2005 Innsbruck, Austria. Day 7 We travelled through the mountainous terrain of Austria at something of a brisk trot, playing those horrid Sound of Music songs (as the movie was, obviously, placed in Austria) all the way and stopping for barely more than an hour in Innsbruck. There we obediantly took photos of their Olympic Ski Jump and Goldenes Dachl, or Golden Roof, a balcony from which Emperor Maximilian I of the 1500's would watch tournaments and dancing in the city square below. Afterwards, left with a brief opportunity of time to sightsee, we wandered along the main streets, and then through the tourist shops looking for postcards and souvenirs of a country that we'd not really even seen before trundling back to the bus. A few hours later, we were in Germany. ... read more

Having left Munich and travelled through Bavaria we reached Austria once more and were set to brave the icy waters for some white-water rafting. Most players were suited up and after some instructions we headed down to the river to find it was absolutely freezing. As a result while wading by the edge a few of us were spear tackled into the water ... bloody idots! Once in we were settling off on a run with about 4 rafts in the water and down towards the rapids. A few times we were allowed to jump off and swim through the water before getting back on, one of the funnier times is when Mike and Craig S were having a tussle from 2 different rafts and Craig ended up in the water thinking it was deep, ... read more

Had an awesome time at Oktoberfest ! Can't wait to go back tomorrow ! Nelson and I caught the train up to Munchen, it only took an hour from Worgl. We wandered down to Marianplatz and watched the Glockenspiel, then went shopping. I'd forgotten how good the shopping is in Munich, so many more shops than just H&M at M4 that we're used to. I managed to track down the Birkenstock shop Amanda took us to when we were there on tour, and found heaps of new Birkies I'm going to get when I go back. We made it to the festival grounds by one, and it was so cool to see. It's like the easter show, wonderland and dreamworld all rolled into one, but even bigger. There's so many cool rides i can't wait to ... read more

After a big night of drinking and partying, we woke up this morning to get some physical activity in, as if we haven't been doing enough walking. Most people decided to just sleep in as they were too hung over to go mountain biking. I didn't think that the course would be overly strenuous, boy was I wrong. About 12 of us went over to the bike shop where we were met by about 30 others from another tour. We all got fitted for our bikes and off we went. We all rode single file along some very easy trails and along the sides of the road. The ride was very scenic with the green mountains being topped off by the clouds and fog. We passed some kind of sheep show which might be kind ... read more
