Cheri and I have employed an advanced form of mathematics to calculate the best possible usage of our holiday time. We both get 20 days from our jobs, and an extra 8 on top of that for public holidays. Combined with judicious usage of long weekends, and you can turn 1 day of holiday from work into 10 actual elapsed days. Some creative accounting goes into it. For Easter, Cheri and I decided to spend time in two cities: Munich and Innsbruck. Munich being one of the cities that we had enjoyed the most, the last time that we were here and Innsbruck being the home town of one of my friends (a mad scientist who deals closely with turning Star Trek into reality). It might seem unfair to call him a mad scientist, however he ... read more

I've got myself a new job in....Switzerland! I start on the 23rd of April so will literally finish up here then be home for a week or so and then onto a completely different dialect again! Doing a fairly similar job but this time no children involved. Somewhere in the Bernese Oberland (more to be confirmed as and when I know!) What other news can I give you? Well I left Vienna on wednesday very early in the morning. Had a lovely time. Enjoyed a city even though I have to admit I did miss the mountains. Even the cows of which there are a plenty. I have now been informed by the locals that I have perfect hands for milking! Hahah maybe it's fate I came to Austria. All I need now is a ... read more

I woke up to a long, rough tounge scraping across my cheek. Kaya, the dog who belongs to our hosts, Rene and Steffie, chose to wake me gently...with her saliva. Yuck. Today is the day that we get to go sledding in the Alps! Steffie generously offered to take us with her to meet her parents for a day on the mountain. I sometimes have to remind myself where I am. "What country did I wake up in this morning?" Austria. Innsbruck. Im Couchsurfing with a mountain guide and her rock climber boyfriend, I mentally take note. We packed our poles, snowshoes, borrowed ski pants and jacket, boots, thermal socks, gloves, extra rope, doggie treats, leash, water bowl, sunscreen and hat in preparation for the day. It reminded me of getting infants ready for a ... read more

We then moved accross to a resort called St. Anton in the next valley. St. Anton is regarded as one of the top 5 snow resorts in the world. It certainlay had a massive ski area and some great runs, but its a pity so many other people know it is one of the worlds top 5 as it was very busy, we were allmost bumping into people coming down some of the runs! Some friends of ours, Ozzie, Fiona and Will, joined us for the week there and we got to stay in an apartment for a week instead of our van. The heating was a big bonus to us! The first thing Shilpa and Fiona noticed were number of stuffed animals all over the appartment! One evening Dara and Ozzie decided to put ... read more

Just a quick note really to let you all know I am still alive. Not had a chance to really update you all for a while and unfortunately now isn't the time either! All I will say for now is that it's been an interesting 5 weeks but good at the same time. Attempted my first black slope (as it happens the bottom of the Harakiri, the steepest prepared slope in Austria!) Only issue being I still get scared but I suppose it's all part of the fun?! Right better head off... my Dad is here as of tomorrow so hoping maybe I can use his laptop. Otherwise off to Vienna for next weekend. I am gonna enjoy my holiday! Will try to fill you in on my escapades as soon as possible. In the meantime, ... read more

Our trip began with a sprint accross western europe to catch the remainder of the ski season in the alps. We had an afternoon crossing from dover to calais and ended up stopping the frist night in a half open campsite near Tournai in Belgium. Grand for one night but wouldn't want to have stayed their any longer. The next day we made it as far as the black forest in Germany after a stop for lunch in Luxembourg. There were quite a few beautiful 'gasthaus' in the black forest but since it was off season they were all closed. We free camped that night at a forest car park at the top of one of the hills and woke up to some beautiful scenery and moved on towards the alps. Shilpa didn't even have ... read more

Ötztaler Alpen Ich hatte... read more

This week has proved successful... finally got the hang of this parallel skiing business. I've decided it's more mind over matter. You think about it too much hips, legs, knees etc and you just get confused. My opinion anyway. Must say it's more thanx to the ski instructor this week rather than my wonderful skiing ability! Must say absolutely awesome ski school but where the hell do ski instructors learn their english?! Example: Student: 'Look at you drinking and eating on the ski lift, is there anything you can't do?' Instructor: 'No, I can do everything on a ski lift. Just watch, next time I come up I'll be having a wank!' Shocking! Suffice to say, the week pretty much continued in this way. Was hilarious, the kids and teachers loved them and we had a ... read more

It is a bit concerning when it is mid-January in Europe and the most common response to my comment ‘I am heading off for a week of skiing in Austria’ is ‘Is there any snow?’. A layer of stress is added when the planned ski holiday is with two Aussies who have traveled half way across the world for said ski trip. What is a girl to do? In my case: * obsessively check the snow reports for at least three weeks pre departure (including checking other resorts in Europe to see if an alternative destination would have been better - no, it was crap everywhere); *repeat like a mantra the phrase ‘I picked St Anton partly for the snow and partly because it is famous for its Après ski (some say the best in Europe). ... read more

Hello there everyone, It’s been a hectic few weeks over the Christmas period, apologies for the lack of communication both via the blog and email, phone calls etc. Hope all enjoyed the festive period. It was business as usual over Christmas here, it didn't feel all that festive. We are still in St. Anton as you can see, however the season isn’t progressing quite like we imagined. It seems we chose to come and work a season in the Alps the same year that global warming has started to kick in. There is a remarkable lack of the white stuff. If I look out of my window right now, I will see grungy brownish mountains. The temperature is warm enough to go outdoors wearing only a jumper. Rain falls instead of snow. Obviously, none of this ... read more
