Background: Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945, Austria's status remained unclear for a decade. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. Following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 and Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995, some Austrians have called into question this neutrality. A prosperous, democratic country, Austria entered the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999.

Well it was time to finally leave Munderfing and my good friends Rod and Jess....hic......sob.... I was especially going to miss all the lovely road signs of the area. However I was blessed with one last look at 'Pfaffing' as we drove to the train station. Jessie was a sweetheart and drove me to the train station in Salzburg where I caught the 12:12 train to Villach, where I had decided to spend the next couple of nights. There really was no rhyme nor reason to my decision to visit Villach, except for the fact that it happens to be on [View Full Entry]

4th of July dearies! And I'm in beautiful Austria. Happy Independence day to all of the Americans. Today, other than eating breakfast and watching a movie, I'm taking the bus to go the lake. Ironman Austria is tomorrow and everyone around here is doing it. I'm going to watch it to support my family. They swim through a lake and canal, bike through steep hills, and finish it up with a run. I couldn't do it, that's for sure! The people here speak German, but I'm lucky since many British and American folks have come to enter the Ironman. [View Full Entry]

Day 19 (Tuesday, September 23rd) Today was our last day in Slovenia. After eating breakfast and checking out of the hotel, we began the drive north towards Austria. As was the case with all of our prior entrances into new countries, no passport check was completed at the border. Sometimes, it seems as though there is a similar mentality between countries in Europe as there is in the States; they just wave you on in. It was raining in Lake Bled, but by the time we got to Klagenfurt, Austria, the rain had stopped and the sun was trying to come [View Full Entry]

After a little more than one week at home doing some work and seeing my family and friends, I drove to Greifenburg on Tuesday to participate in the DHV Junior and Ladies Challenge. That is a competition for female and young male pilots (not older than 28) that is made up to introduce them to competition flying. I arrived in Greifenburg late on Tuesday night and met the other pilots on Wednesday morning. There was only one more girl, Tina, and three more boys, Jakob, Moritz, and Peter. Matthias, the organizer, had decided to fly in the comp as well, so [View Full Entry]

Drove back to St Poltein to find our friendly hardware store to buy an adaptor for our power cord, and by the time we found our way out again we had decided to only drive to the outskirts of Vienna today as we would not have enough time to see anything. So we hunted around for a camping ground or info centre without any success until about 7pm when we came across a bit of a forest which we could drive into quite easily so we tucked ourselves away from the road and parked. We still had plenty of light [View Full Entry]

I must say that as I stay in Austria longer, I become more and more impressed. To update my readers of my travels in this beautiful country I will start from the 25th. The 25th I did a whole lot of nothing. I slept most of the day nursing a bit of an upset stomach (draw your own conclusions) Because I had stayed up the night before tazen (dancing) with Anna and Mateja I was very tired. RANT (Pardon me Techno lovers, but Techno really sucks when you take a GOOD hip hop/r&b song and put it to the house [View Full Entry]

May 30, 2008 Villach, Austria Today we drove the 3 hour or so through Slovenia to Villach, Austria. This is a very nice drive through some beautiful country side and across some passes in the Slovenian / Austrian Alps into Austria. Lots of skiing here. The freeways are great ( Tolls ) and it is a very easy drive. The drive into Austria reminded us of travelling into the mountains from Calgary and to Canmore and Banff. Still lots of snow on the tops of some very high peaks. We were amazed again with the amount of tunneling used to straighten [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! Here is an update on my activities since I last wrote! We have now been in Austria for 2 weeks. Since I last wrote, we began our semester at school and now we are already on Easter Break!! This is a break down of my week: Last saturday we went skiing in the alps (Axamer Litzum) for the first time. It was incredible!! In a moment of infinite wisdom, Jenna and I decided to climb up to the top of a ridge, following an american friend's encouraging words: "don't worry about it! its only a little bit steep." A [View Full Entry]

Wanderlust!! Europe » Austria » Carinthia » Klagenfurt
In Poggersdorf (near Klagnefurt) - tomorrow night (saturday), I will be attending a birthday party for who knows who... a friend of a couch surfer. I will hopefully surf nearby for 1 or 2 nights. Following - I will head to the autobahn on-ramp, and stick out my thumb --- to Vienna! Monday and Tuesday seem to be decent days; no rain or snow... let's see what happens! (Bologna and Venice/Padova/Chioggia blog is delayed ... sorrry!) My backpack is too large. I have a jacket and a sweater that I will probably never use again. I think I'll ditch them on [View Full Entry]
